"Vicki Crawford wrote an intelligent, well reasoned post on gun control on the Naples Daily News website. In it, she explained her view of individual freedoms, personal responsibility, parental responsibility and the historical significance of the Second Amendment. She also briefly touches upon her personal experience with gun control." ...

"NOTE: Congress passed HR 2640. It now goes to the President for a signature, which, I'm sure, makes it a done deal."

"In response to this rational defense of the right to keep and bear arms, a snotty, cowardly, sanctimonious little pissant who writes under the pseudonym 'bossman1' has decided to brand Crawford a 'nut.'" ...

"Those of us who enjoy firearms for both self-defense and hunting are a little frustrated. What we are frustrated about is the attitude among some firearms enthusiasts that, 'As long as the anti-gunners aren't clamoring to take away my (insert gun of choice), I don't care if they ban (insert boogeyman -- .50cal, 'assault' weapons, etc)'."

"Well, now the chickens have come home to roost. I have seen an increase in both tone and substance in 'banning firearms that can penetrate body armor'. We know that that includes most deer rifles."

"To understand the Second Amendment, we must first look at what it says: 'A militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.'"

"Some would have us believe that the Founding Fathers' purpose of the first part of the second amendment was that states had a right to keep a militia (a collective right of the states to maintain a militia)."

"This interpretation ignores history. ..."

"Ya' know that Colt M4 Carbine vs. Heckler & Koch (HK) HK416 vs. FN MK16 SCAR-Light (SCAR-L) vs. HK XM8 LAR extreme dust conditions reliability test that the U.S. Army Test and Evaluation Center (ATEC) at Aberdeen Proving Ground (APG), Md. was conducting? No? Well, we’ll tell ya’. The U.S. Army just got done conducting a test on all four weapons, and the results are in. Before we go through them, we’ll cut right to the chase: The Colt M4 Carbine came in dead last, with 882 stoppages over 60,000 rounds between ten (10) guns. Not great. But, more on that in a minute." ...

It's time to outlaw military assault weapons

"The National Rifle Association likes to say that 'guns don't kill people; people kill people.' Unfortunately, this overused phrase was again proven wrong by the recent shooting at the Omaha shopping mall in which a deranged teenager killed nine people, including himself, with a military assault rifle."

"The hard truth is disturbed people with easy access to guns kill people, and when there's an assault weapon involved it's clear that disturbed people with easy access to military weapons can kill lots of people."

"... And just as the right to own a car doesn't give you the right to own a military tank, so gun ownership rights shouldn't extend to military assault weapons designed to simply kill lots of people as quickly as possible." ...

KABA Note: If the purpose of these weapons is to "simply kill lots of people as quickly as possible" then why do police departments across the country issue them to their patrol officers?

"The malls of Collin County are certainly full of merchandise this year. Happily for retailers, despite a weak dollar and economic upheaval, traffic in these centers is expected to increase the closer we get to Christmas."

"Indeed, the winter months from November to February include some important dates that encourage crowds of people to shop. But as the events in Westroads Mall in Omaha, Neb., this month and in Salt Lake City last February show, perhaps there is no safety in numbers."

"Sometime next year, the Supreme Court is expected to hear the case of District of Columbia vs. Heller. The final decision may affect the interpretation of the Second Amendment for decades to come." ...

"The country suffers yet another gun massacre, a community is consumed by shock and grief, the President and political leaders twist into contortions to avoid laying blame on the easy access disturbed teens have to assault guns, behaviorists and security 'experts' pontificate and how does the pro-gun community respond?"

"Well, if you read some of their insensitive, hostile and, frankly, crazed ideas, you might find yourself believing with me that truth really is stranger than fiction."

"Here's a sample, from Alan Gottlieb ... 'If there is a true outrage in this incident, it is the prohibition of legally concealed firearms at Westroads Mall.' Wow - I would have thought true outrage might concern the dead and wounded. ..." ...

"Last night Congress passed the 'NICS Improvement Act,' a bill that in prior incarnations was designed to improve the records available to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS)--the national system used to screen gun buyers."

"Much has been made of the bill's bi-partisan, triangulating support: Democrats! Republicans! The National Rifle Association! The Brady Campaign! Beyond this cheery bon temps, little public attention has been paid to what the bill actually does beyond its title. And that's because if you start looking at the details of the bill--especially after NRA-backed changes made by Oklahoma Senator Tom Coburn--it becomes clear that the measure is nothing less than a pro-gun Trojan Horse. ..." ...

"Gun Owners of America and its supporters took a knife in the back yesterday, as Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) out-smarted his congressional opposition into agreeing on a so-called 'compromise' on HR 2640 -- a bill which now goes to the President's desk."

"The bill -- known as the Veterans Disarmament Act to its opponents -- is being praised by the National Rifle Association and the Brady Campaign."

"The Brady Bunch crowed 'Victory! U.S. Congress Strengthens Brady Background Check System." The NRA stated that last minute changes to the McCarthy bill made a 'good bill even better [and that] the end product is a win for American gun owners.'"

"A new bill has been passed by Congress designed to keep guns out of the hands of the mentally ill. The deadly shooting at Virginia Tech prompted the drafting of the bill. On the day of the shootings, a student went on a rampage, killing 32 people and himself using two guns he had bought despite having a documented history of mental illness."

"The bill passed the Senate and House of Representatives without objection and is the first major new gun control law in more than a decade. But, how does it affect gun shop owners? Just how easy is it to buy a firearm in Oklahoma? What changes will it mean if the bill becomes law? 7News' Kenny Scarle applied for a permit to find out." ...

"The carnage continues in our nation’s gun-free zones (schools, universities, malls, post offices)."

"The multiple killings of disarmed victims in gun-free zones in Ogden and Omaha are the latest examples."

"In contrast, look at what recently happened at a church in Colorado Springs. A law-abiding citizen who was licensed to carry a concealed weapon brought down a deranged young man and stopped him from killing an additional 50 to 100 worshippers."

"The lesson is clear: responsible citizens who are licensed to carry should have the right to protect themselves and others while in designated gun-free zones." ...

"Which Democrat presidential candidate has mentioned gun rights during the debates? I haven't heard one! Are they ashamed to admit their party platform interprets the U.S. Constitution to mean our gun rights are only collective rights, not individual rights?"

"Looking at the constitutions of the original states individually, it's clear that our founders meant an individual’s gun rights when they framed the Second Amendment. For example, the New Hampshire Constitution reads, 'All persons have the right to keep and bear arms in defense of themselves, their families, their property, and the state.'" ...

"One of the most serious issues facing urban America is crime, especially violent gun crime. In Jersey City we have tackled the issue of crime head on, and our efforts have resulted in a dramatic drop in all areas of crime. But more needs to be done in stopping the flow of illegal guns into our city, and we need our citizens' help in this important fight."

"In Jersey City, we have been aggressive in our attack against illegal guns, through crime fighting measures and legislation. We have focused our Police Department on illegal guns, which has resulted in the increased confiscation of guns and a gun buyback program took nearly 1,000 guns off our streets." ...

A Capitol police officer is out of a job after telling investigators he hired a prostitute who then stole his gun.

Joseph Kelly, 56, turned in his badge Monday.

Ed Myslewicz, the press secretary of general services, which oversees the Capitol police, told News 8 that the department does not plan to make any changes to its code of conduct because of the incident.

Harrisburg police plan to charge Kelly with soliciting a prostitute.

Cara Liddick, of Carlisle, was arrested Sunday on theft charges, but those charges were later dropped when the gun was recovered.

"In the interview, Bocchini describes the case as 'a nightmare,' involving multiple accounts of what happened, the presence of alcohol, lacking photos or tapes, and with medical evidence that might show only that people had sex."

"After months of relatively good reporting on matters of firearms and crime, the Cleveland Plain Dealer has jumped back to its old ways of anti-gun bias."

"Sunday’s front page story, entitled 'Where do the guns come from?' came complete with a list of all 108 'victims' who died from gun fire. If you read the fine print, you might notice that some of these 'victims' deaths were “ruled as justified homicides” - i.e they died when their intended victim or police used justified deadly force against these violent miscreants." ...

"In a recent column, perhaps Rob Woutat's point is that our Bill of Rights is under attack from all sides, which is true."

"The founders argued vehemently about including a bill of rights. The opposition was that it would inherently limit rights of the people. In the end they chose to enumerate 10 they felt were the most important."

"Government and groups have sought to limit those rights by saying for instance, ... that the Second Amendment is really about a state's right to have a militia. Nothing could be further from the truth. To think that the framers of the Constitution would include a state's right in the Bill of Rights is ludicrous. It is without doubt a right of the 'people' as it states in the text." ...

"The death of America as an independent sovereign nation is about to be finalized."

"The U.S. Supreme Court will soon begin hearing testimony on the Second Amendment right of the people to keep and bear arms for their own security. We are to know the outcome of the court's decision in June 2008. It appears that the court is hearing this case to overrule the present understanding that citizens can have guns in their homes for their own defense and forming a militia if needed against larger attacks to security of the community." ...

FL: Who is National Rifle Association lobbying for?

FULL TEXT BELOW:

One of your letter writers ("Guns important," Dec. 7) argues that the National Rifle Association is not like other lobbying organizations since it lobbies on behalf of citizens.

Does this imply that the NRA does not help companies like Ruger, Smith & Wesson, Remington, Browning, Bushmaster, Savage and Winchester?

I have always thought the real purpose of the NRA is to protect arms manufacturers from controls. The claim concerning our Second Amendment rights is nothing more than smoke and mirrors.
