Gunmen nabbed in carjacking

DENVER, COLORADO -- A brief two-county crime spree by two young gunmen who fired at two people ended peacefully in a Douglas County field Sunday morning.
More than a dozen law enforcement officers and a homeowner with a shotgun surrounded the pair near Franktown, and the two surrendered without any further shots being fired, said Cpl. Michael Rollin of the Douglas County Sheriff's Department.
"I think the boys made a wise choice," Rollin said.
Steven Roy Miller, 20, is being held in lieu of $1 million bond at the Douglas County Jail and Matthew Koyama, 17, is being held without bail at the Marvin J. Foote Center for juveniles in Arapahoe County.
The crime spree started about 8:55 a.m. in Lakewood when Miller and Koyama approached a man coming out of the Foothills Ice Arena in the 2200 block of South Kipling Street and demanded the keys to his red Ford Mustang, Rollin said. When he refused, one of the two fired a shot, missing the man's head. The two then sped off in the Mustang.
Police did not identify the victim, but an employee at Foothills, Sam Hayden, said the man was a teenager who skates at the arena.
After the two sped off, the Douglas County sheriff's dispatcher received several calls about them.
"They were showing the gun and all kinds of things," Rollin said.
Finally, the two abandoned the Mustang on Colorado 86 west of Franktown and apparently tried to steal another car by firing at the driver while they were standing in the road, Rollin said. The car was hit by a bullet, but nobody was injured, he said.
As law enforcement officers descended on the scene, Miller and Koyama fled into a field along Cherry Creek.
The armed homeowner, who had been alerted by authorities, reported the pair's
location, and they were confronted by sheriff's Sgt. David Parker as officers closed in.
Lakewood is considering filing charges of attempted homicide, aggravated robbery and aggravated motor vehicle theft, Rollin said. In Douglas County, the two may face charges of attempted aggravated robbery and menacing, and Miller also could be charged with attempted second-degree murder, while Koyama could be charged with attempted aggravated motor vehicle theft and juvenile weapons violations, Rollin said.
