by Sean Oberle

Nov. 6 - 11, 2000

INTERNATIONAL

** Gun Control Network (United Kingdom) expresses disappointment that UK government is not moving fast enough to ban minors from using guns in adult-supervised gun club settings, to regulate toy/fake guns, or to require licensing of BB guns and other air rifles. “Anything that looks like a gun should be treated like one. That means if it looks like a handgun it should be banned,” writes group. No word on plumbing elbows.

NATIONAL

** Handgun Control Inc., Million Mom March and Coalition to Stop Gun Violence dedicate home pages to crowing about real victories (Colorado and Oregon initiatives) and post election spin: 1) Losses of a handful candidates which they opposed, despite no analysis of effect of gun issue, is “proof” that a “majority” of Americans want more gun control. 2) Gore’s thin victories in labor union strongholds Michigan and Pennsylvania after VP abandoned gun control rhetoric and clouded his platform is "proof" of a weak NRA.

** American's For Gun Safety release on its victory in passing Colorado and Oregon "gun show loophole" initiatives includes statement from Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz): "The campaign to close the gun show loophole has not been about what's conservative and what's liberal. It's been about what's right and what's wrong. Today's vote, quite simply, is a victory for what's right."

** First Monday provides form email to urge "next president" to increase gun control.

** American Assn. of Pediatrics issues 82-item checklist to help parents assure homes are safe for children, including "Do not keep a firearm anywhere in the house." AAP urges parents to complete checklist every six months.

** Stop Gun Violence offers list of phrases that supposedly demonstrate pervasiveness of gun culture in U.S. society, including: “son of a gun,” “bullet points” (in word processing) and “oh shoot” (as in “darn”).
