Letter from Indiana Resident to Public Servant

Originally published on this website August 3, 2000

Dear elected official:

Since you see fit to send me form letters, you are getting one in return. The issue today is the NICS, which I’m told Indiana intends to operate only from 9-5 on weekdays starting August 25.

I sell cutlery, not firearms, but the gun shows are a substantial part of my income. You realize, of course, that if the NICS is not available on weekends, no one can sell guns then, and therefore, there will be no gun shows. This will adversely affect my income, and taxes that I pay that pay your wages.

Perhaps you need reminding that some people actually work from 9-5 on weekdays, and therefore will be unable to purchase firearms under this scheme. Perhaps you have forgotten that more than half the people in this state own firearms, and won’t take lightly to being shuffled off in this fashion. Perhaps you have forgotten that you work for us, not us for you, and it’s up to you to keep to our preferred hours of operation, not yours.

You certainly seem to have forgotten Section 32 of the Bill of Rights of the Indiana Constitution, so I will remind you of it now: “The people shall have a right to bear arms, for the defense of themselves and the State.”

Please note that it does not say, “The people shall have a right to bear arms, for the defense of themselves and the State, during hours when the legislature finds it convenient for them to make such acquisitions, provided coffee breaks, lunch, meetings with lobbyists, and the State Police’s donut munching are not disturbed.”

Consider yourself warned: if this legislation comes to pass, you will be targeted for political extermination. I will vote every single one of you out of office, without regard to party affiliation, posturing before the media, or any form letter you send informing me of how you “agree with (my) sentiments, but feel the action is necessary due to the (10,000 whiny Fascists at the so-called Million Moron March).

If my tone sounds outrageous and insulting, you may take it as an indication of my contempt for you. Either defend my rights, or get out.

Name removed for reasons of oath, immigrant, veteran, voter
