No charges in self-defense
shooting

as: ESTILL SPRINGS - A 28-year-old Tullahoma man was shot to death just after midnight Thursday at an Estill Springs residence.
The victim was identified as Thomas Michael Nelson, of 1015 E. Lauderdale St.
Funeral services for Nelson will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Tullahoma Funeral Home with burial in Maplewood Cemetery. Fuller said the two were apparently involved in a disagreement when Nelson allegedly drew two razor-type knives and was shot in self defense by Kalt.
"It appears Nelson drew the knives and began to threaten Kalt," Fuller said.
He said Kalt allegedly responded by using a .22-caliber rifle and shot Nelson multiple times.
A witness at the scene called 911 and Fuller said Kalt was questioned.
"What it boils down to is (Kalt) is not charged at this time due to the fact that there is the appearance of a self-defense homicide," Fuller said.
He said Dr. Keith Brown, the county medical examiner, pronounced Nelson dead.
Estill Springs police and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation are also involved in the investigation.
Fuller said the Franklin County District Attorney's office will determine whether evidence will be presented to a grand jury which would determine if any charges would be forthcoming.
Nelson was born in Chicago, Ill., and had been employed by Southern Kreations lawn service in Tullahoma.
He is survived by his father, William Larry Nelson, Lynchburg; his mother and step father, Doris and Jimmie Bates, Tullahoma; his grandmother, Myrtle Nelson, Tullahoma; five sisters, Lori Kalt, Sherry Stoutenburg, Kimberly Hargrove and Sharon Nelson, Tullahoma, and Monica Clark, Manchester; two brothers, Billy Nelson, Lynchburg, and Steven Hargrove, Tullahoma, and two step brothers, Brian Bates, Manchester, and Patrick Bates, Tullahoma.
