Home invader shot by resident

DAYTON - Police were looking for a man they think was wounded Wednesday night when he invaded a home on Huffman Avenue and was shot by a resident inside with a shotgun.
Police responded to 710 Huffman Ave. about 9:40 p.m. on a report of a shooting and issued a call for officers to look for a man who had attempted to rob the residence.
Kimberly Watkins, 34, said she, husband Keith, 36, and their 12-year-old son were watching TV - with the front door open and the screen door locked - when a man wearing a camouflage ski mask and carrying a handgun entered their duplex.
"He said ‘give me your money, give me everything you’ve got’," she said, adding that the man threatened to shoot her son in the leg.
An undetermined amount of money was taken before Keith Watkins exchanged gunfire with the robber, Lt. John Bardun said. It was not clear whether Watkins had a license for the weapon, but no charges were being considered, Bardun said.
The robber got into a nearby car and fled, Bardun said, and officers were checking area hospitals for shooting victims.
Officers followed a trail of blood from the residence to a puddle where they think a car may have been waiting. A canine unit was called to search the neighborhood near South Findlay Street. Witnesses said they heard at least three shots.
Keith Watkins was taken to Miami Valley Hospital with a gunshot wound to his hand, Bardun said.
