Off-duty female cop kills armed attacker

A constable's deputy who was attacked while she was leaving her
house this morning shot and killed one of her assailants, investigators
said. Police are still looking for at least one other suspect who ran
away.
J.C. Mosier, chief deputy for Precinct 1 Constable Jack Abercia, gave
the following account of the morning's events:
At about 6 a.m., Deputy Tammy Alfred, a Precinct 1 deputy, was
getting ready to leave her home in the 20200 block of Powercourt in the
Atascocita subdivision of Pinehurst.
She had already walked her two daughters, ages 10 and 9, to the car to take them to school and head to work herself, and she had just picked
up her pistol from the garage, where she kept it when not on duty.
A plain-clothes officer, she had hidden her pistol under her clothes
and was returning to the car when two armed men wearing masks
approached her. One grabbed her and put a gun to her head, warning
her, "Don't make a sound or we'll kill you" while the other walked around to the back of the house.
Alfred twisted to get away and shot the man with the gun on her. Upon
hearing the shot, the second man fired through the back door of her
house, where her husband and 4-year-old son were, but they were not
injured. The second man returned to the front yard and began firing at
her but missed.
Both suspects ran to the back of house across street and fled into the woods. Pursuing them, police found the body of one of the suspects
about 15 feet into the woods.
Police also found one of the suspect's pistols in Alfred's front yard.
Alfred said her assailants made no demands, so police are unsure if
they were trying to carjack her. She drives an unmarked county car.
"We have no idea what they were after," said Bridget Bryant, Alfred's
sister, who added that their father was killed four years ago. "It's like it's happening all over again."
