NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA -- A 57-year-old New Orleans man was shot during an exchange of gunfire in which he wounded a 16-year-old robber Monday afternoon a couple of blocks from North Broad Street and Orleans Avenue, police said.

Both the victim and the robber ended up at Charity Hospital where detectives sorted out the details of what happened.

The man, who was not identified, was in stable condition Monday night after surgery for two gunshot wounds in the chest, officials said.

The teen suspect was shot in the chest, chin and wrist, but was in good condition, said Charity Hospital spokesman Jerry Romig. His name was not released.

The suspect, who was driven to Charity Hospital by his mother, will be booked with attempted murder and three counts of armed robbery, said officer Joe Narcisse, a New Orleans Police Department spokesman. The 16-year-old also is suspected of robbing two other people minutes before the shootout, Narcisse said.

Police said the teen confronted a man and a woman walking in the 700 block of North Dupre Street, between St. Peter Street and Orleans Avenue, about 3 p.m. The two surrendered their valuables, police said.

Moments later, police said, the same gunman approached the 57-year-old man walking to a neighborhood grocery store.

When he demanded money, the man pulled a small-caliber pistol and exchanged fire with the robber, police said.

The wounded victim went home and called police, saying he believed he had wounded the robber, officers said.

The suspect, whose gun was left on the scene, was helped into the getaway car by an accomplice, officers said.

The accomplice, who was not identified and is being sought by police, drove the robbery suspect to his home near North Claiborne and Elysian Fields avenues, about two miles away.

The teen's mother also called police to report the shooting and took him to Charity Hospital, police said.

There, he was confronted by 1st District detectives who had gone to see if they could talk with the 57-year-old wounded victim, officers said.

The detectives talked with several parties at the hospital, including "independent witnesses" who identified the youth as the robber, police said.

Narcisse said no charges are being considered against the 57-year-old man.
