OAKLAND PARK, FLORIDA -- Detectives are looking for an increasingly violent ex-con who is a suspect in two armed robbery cases in the area, a spokeswoman for the Broward Sheriff’s Office said on Thursday.
BSO robbery detectives say they have identified David A. Smith, 20, as the suspect in the robberies and believe he is armed and very dangerous. Anyone coming into contact with Smith should call 911.
Smith was released from prison in August, detectives said.
Here’s what happened, according to BSO spokeswoman Veda Coleman-Wright:
Around 7:30 p.m. Sept. 2, a gunman approached a four people in the parking lot of Fitzwilly’s Pub & Raw Bar, 2500 W. Oakland Park Blvd., and demanded cash and jewelry. The man robbed each of their wallets, money, and purses. Before fleeing, the suspect also ripped several gold chains from one of the victims, leaving a deep cut around her neck. The man then drove away alone in a maroon 1985 Chevrolet Caprice that later proved to be stolen.
A week later, on Oct. 4th, the suspect struck again, this time at a machine shop in Oakland Park. The victims, a husband and wife, were inside the shop around 6:30 p.m., when the suspect walked in pointing a small caliber pistol and demanding money. The man ordered both victims into a bathroom and threatened to kill them if they did not give him any money. The gunman then allowed the woman to leave the bathroom to get her purse.
It wasn’t enough, though. He got angry, insisting on more money, then began pistol-whipping her husband on the head.
The husband managed to get to his own gun, a 9 mm pistol and fired several shots at the gunman. At least one shot hit the gunman in the foot.
He still managed to hobble off to the stolen Caprice where he jumped in the passenger side and then fled the scene with another man driving.
The stolen car was recovered two days later in Fort Lauderdale at Northwest 24th Avenue and 14th Street.
The pistol-whipped husband was treated at a local hospital for his head injury.
