Shooting ruled self-defense,
no charges filed

as: MOBILE, ALABAMA -- Mobile police believe the Grand Bay man who was shot Christmas Eve and
died Christmas day at Providence Hospital was killed in self-defense
by his half brother.
Frank David Pritchard Jr., 36, was shot by Ronald Wheeler Ohlinger,
28, during a domestic argument Monday night, police said.
The shooting occurred at a mobile home in the 8800 block of Jeff
Hamilton Road in south Mobile County, within the Mobile police
jurisdiction.
Cpl. John Goodwin, a Mobile police spokesman, said no charges were
filed against Ohlinger who lives at the home where Pritchard was shot.
Ohlinger is the slain mans half brother, according to family members.
The shooting remained under investigation Wednesday and will be
reviewed by a grand jury, Goodwin said.
He was loved and cherished, and when he walked into a room, he lit up
the room, he had a glow about him, said Cindy Pritchard, the dead mans
sister-in-law. Looking into his blue eyes was like looking into a sea.
Cindy Pritchard said her brother-in-law had worked at United
Scaffolding in south Mobile County. He had attended Theodore High
School.
He would give you the shirt off his back and food off his plate, she
said.
Frank Pritchards hobbies included riding motorcycles, hunting and
fishing, his sister-in-law said. He especially enjoyed riding his
Harley Davidson motorcycle, she said.
Pritchards slaying was the 45th homicide so far this year in Mobile.
There were 20 homicides last year.
Serenity Funeral Home on Old Pascagoula Road in south Mobile is
handling the funeral arrangements.
Pritchards survivors include his wife, Marie Murrill Pritchard of
Grand Bay; three daughters, Ashley Murrill of Grand Bay, Amanda
Carpenter and Angela Pritchard Carpenter of Mobile; two sons, Frank
David Murrill and Scott Murrill, both of Grand Bay; his parents,
Margie Johns and Frank David Pritchard Sr., both of Mobile; a sister,
Sherry Pritchard of Huntsville, two brothers, Stacy Pritchard of Grand
Bay and Ronald Wheeler Ohlinger of Mobile; and other relatives.
Visitation is 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. The funeral will
be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home chapel. Interment will be in
Serenity Memorial Gardens.
