Protecting Stupid Sheeple

Subject: Your Letter

Dr. Corwin,

In your letter: http://www.ama-assn.org/sci-pubs/amnews/amn_01/edca1217.htm

I'm not so sure. While your intentions may be in earnest, those around you and those whom will take your advice may not be. Your quote:

"Participants also agreed that although gun-related injuries could be reduced by improving gun safety education, by designing better guns and by reducing the availability of guns to certain groups of people, none of these strategies was adequate by itself. All three need to be included in a comprehensive strategy. "

Designing better guns? How? What could you possibly put on a gun that makes it "safe" to use and yet does not have any potential for compromising the integrity of the firearm's use? A use, which in fact, is not inherently safe. There is a reason that the police and military do not want things such as "smart guns" and internal trigger locks; they fail.

Reducing availability to certain groups? Um, what groups would those be? Currently there are laws in place that deny firearms to convicted felons (yet somehow they still manage to get them, it's a wonder). What group would you single out? For what reason? Sounds a bit bias and even possibly racist.

Nothing anyone can do is going to take the place of common sense and education. In our efforts to protect the lowest common denominator in this country (i.e. - stupid people, people with no common sense, etc...), we are making things ridiculously difficult for the honest, lawful citizen such as myself. With an enormous amount of hurdles to overcome just to exercise MY RIGHT to self defense, the last thing I need is more laws to make things "safer."

Criminals get guns regardless of the law. That's why they are called criminals. Anyone thinking that more laws are going to deter criminals from getting firearms is simply ignorant.

Also, parents need to get a grip and actually take on some responsibility for their children. If you have a child and you have a firearm, it's not the gun maker's job, it's not government's job, it's YOUR job to make sure the child is supervised and educated in regards to that firearm. If they get their hands on it and shoot themselves, it's YOUR fault, not mine.

Don't even get me started in regards to the declaration of gun death as a "disease". Go cure cancer or something. I don't tell you where to cut, don't tell me about the "evil" firearm.

Again, I hope your letter is in complete earnest. We shall see in time.

Regards,
Ken Ross
