Killing Mosquitos

Dear Mr. Grisamore,

I read your story of January 27th, 2002, entitled, "Lady Bought a Gun," with quite a bit of interest. It seems the woman in question made the reasonable choice to be responsible for her own self-defense, an action which, if more people took it, would make our society more than a little safer. However, one line in your story just jumped out at me:

"She is not your typical gun owner. She is a not a pistol-packin' mama. She is not a violent or vindictive person. She has never killed anything bigger than a mosquito."

That's an interesting statement. It implies your "typical" gun owner is a violent, vindictive person who regularly kills things "bigger than a mosquito."

Was it just a mis-chosen statement, or later placed there by your editor? Maybe you've read too much material from the Violence Policy Center, and Handgun Control, Inc, and it just kind of "popped in there" as the right thing to say? Perhaps you're trying to demonize "typical" gun owners in the mind of the public?

I'm interested to hear your response on this. It just didn't fit in with the tone of the rest of your story.

Thank you for your time,

John M. Kupski
