HOUSTON, TEXAS -- The case of a man who fatally shot his roommate in southeast Houston this morning will be referred to the Harris County Grand Jury without recommendation for charges, a Houston police spokesman said.
The shooting happened about 2:45 a.m. in the 1200 block of Elberta. The suspect told HPD investigators he locked himself in his room when the 34-year-old victim came home about 1:30 a.m. and tried to start a fight.
"The suspect said he heard the victim in the house yelling at him and then kicking on his bedroom door," said HPD spokesman John Cannon.
The man told police he fired a shotgun blast as a warning through the top of the door.
The victim continued beating on the door, eventually kicking it open.
"The suspect fired the shotgun again, hitting his roommate in the chest," Cannon said.
The men then went next door where he asked his neighbors to call 911 and waited for police to arrive.
Police said the physical evidence at the scene tends to support his version of what happened.
