"LET'S be honest. He's scared of the thing. That's understandable--so am I. But as a girl I have the luxury of being able to admit it. I don't have to masquerade squeamishness as grand principle-in the interest of mankind, no less."

"A man does. He has to say things like 'One Taniqua Hall is one too many,' as a New York radio talk show host did in referring to the 9-year old New York girl who was accidentally shot last year by her 12-year old cousin playing with his uncle's gun. But the truth is he desperately needs Taniqua Hall, just like he needs as many Columbines and Santees as can be mustered, until they spell an end to the Second Amendment. And not for the benefit of the masses, but for the benefit of his self-esteem." ...

"The Bill of Rights was appended to the Constitution almost from the beginning to protect what our Founding Fathers termed to be 'unalienable rights.' The intent was to preserve those rights for the individual no matter what the government or the majority of its citizens might think. In references to the 'tyranny of the majority,' the first ten amendments made a good deal of sense."

"There are some among the Bill of Rights that enjoy less popularity than others. The Second Amendment, for example, is under consistent attack. So are the Fourth and Fifth Amendments castigated when bad guys go free because the good guys violated one or both, or when we determine that expedience in catching the bad guys outweighs civil liberties. ..." ...

"After two decades of use, the U.S. Department of Defense is getting rid of its Beretta M9 9mm pistol, and going back to the 11.4mm (.45 caliber) weapon. There have been constant complaints about the lesser (compared to the .45) hitting power of the 9mm. And in the last few years, SOCOM (Special Operations Command) and the marines have officially adopted .45 caliber pistols as 'official alternatives' to the M9 Beretta. But now SOCOM has been given the task of finding a design that will be suitable as the JCP (Joint Combat Pistol). Various designs are being evaluated, but all must be .45 caliber and have an eight round magazine (at least), and high capacity mags holding up to 15. The new .45 will also ... be able to take a silencer ..." ...

"Though disheartening, the news that U.S. Repeating Arms plans to close its flagship New Haven factory did not surprise many in the firearms industry. In recent years, several high-profile firearms manufacturers have gone out of business, and more will surely follow, said Steve Prindle, president of Silver City Sporting Arms in West Haven." ...

"When I was a teenager living in northern Minnesota, my father took me down to the Coast to Coast hardware store and bought me a Winchester Model 94 lever-action rifle. A gun cabinet hung from the wall in my bedroom, and the .30-.30 rifle was placed there, without lock and key, for me to admire and hold whenever I wanted."

"This, of course, was a different era, when a 13-year-old knew that mishandling a rifle could lead to serious ramifications."

"It was also an era when guns and cars were made in America, and no one imagined that the Winchester rifle — the icon of the American West, the trusty firearm in John Wayne's scabbard — would ever be made in, say, Portugal or Japan."

"For Winchester rifles, that era ended earlier this month." ...

Gun Review: The Kimber Model 84M SVT

"The Kimber Model 84M SVT (Short Varmint Target) is what’s known as a 'pickup gun,' a short, handy rifle that you can carry day in and day out to shoot whatever you think deserves a bullet. It is, to steal Thomas Hobbes’ phrase, 'nasty, brutish, and short'—a pronounced case of form following function. It is also the most schizophrenic rifle I can remember shooting. When fed ammunition it didn’t like—which was anything with bullets that weighed 55 grains—it shot groups of five that averaged 2.105 inches. ..."

"A Kenai jury acquitted a woman in the shooting death of her boyfriend."

"The jury found Betsy Hester not guilty of murder in the death of John Clark, killed in 2003 at the mobile home the couple shared in Kasilof."

"Hester, 53, was charged with one count of second-degree murder in the death of her boyfriend on Oct. 4, 2003. The Superior Court jury took little time to reach its verdict."

"'This should never have come to trial,' said defense attorney Jim McComas. 'It's a crock and the jury told you that in two hours.'"

"Then, the definition changed. An encounter became an occasion when the police captured a gangster and, instead of arresting him, shot him dead on the spot."

"The cops took their lead from the anti-terrorist squads. It is an open secret that KPS Gill and his force ended the Punjab militancy by simply executing the terrorists they came across.
