"...They are frustrated that in the 13 years since the Brady Bill was signed, gun control efforts have largely stalled, and they single out the party they once proudly served."

"The Republican Party today is not what the Republican Party was 20 years ago... It's moved so far to the right. We were proud of politicians 10 years ago and 12 years ago who stood up and did the right thing. Today, I don't think they're doing the right thing. They're looking out for themselves."

"Cynicism was not the only thing I took from that experience. I developed a new awareness of the problem of gun violence in our country. I began to focus on a concept I had learned in nursing school -- the public health crisis. My professors at Duke had drummed into me that if health care workers don't take the initiative to educate the public, preventable and devastating health problems can turn into a national disaster."

"That's how I began to look at gun violence, as a public health crisis. ..."
