Most people seem to understand that just because you might have a legal right to do something, it doesn’t automatically make that action morally right, intelligent, or the right course of action to pursue.

The fatal shooting of a man in Wise County, Texas is just the latest example of a bad decision that led to an unnecessary death.

It’s the end of an eventful year and the beginning of a new one. I had visions of a fresh start as I sat down to write my final political words of 2014. I’ve had a lot to say about American gun culture over the past 12 months and figured it might be refreshing to explore a different issue. But as I perused The New York Times and came across the headline, Woman at Walmart Is Accidentally Shot Dead by 2-Year-Old Son, I was reminded that it’s nearly impossible to forget about guns in this country for any length of time.

A professor of conflict resolution at Portland State University has written a blistering editorial calling for the repeal of the Second Amendment.

The professor is Tom H. Hastings. His op-ed was published last week in the Wisconsin Gazette, which describes itself as “progressive” and “alternative” (and available “in over 600 statewide locations!”).

It’s usually careless storage and handling of guns that leads to young children finding and firing weapons, hurting themselves or other children.

But the tragic shooting of an Idaho mom by her unwitting toddler in a Hayden Wal-Mart Tuesday has complicated that picture, given that the woman, Veronica Rutledge, had extensive experience with handguns, and had the handgun zippered into a special purse designed for concealed-carry.

The Second Amendment Foundation today filed a lawsuit in federal district court in Tacoma, seeking a permanent injunction against enforcement of portions of Initiative 594, the 18-page gun control measure that took effect Dec. 4 2014, alleging that “portions of I-594…are so vague that a person of ordinary intelligence cannot understand their scope,” and that other parts violate the Second Amendment outright.

Several new California laws aimed at firearm safety go into effect Thursday. Among them is Assembly Bill 1964, which bans the sale of single-shot handguns modified from a semi-automatic rate of fire.

As of Wednesday, gun shops were still able to make these modifications, but once the law goes into effect Jan. 1 the practice will be restricted to break-top or bolt-action guns only.

“Most people can’t deny HK makes a great gun,” said Jeff Bregman, owner of American Gun Works in Glendale. “The P30 and the HK45 are great guns. I can’t sell them because they’re not on the California certified list.”

Written by managing editor Chris Powell, the JI column shows this is so because “the lawsuit’s theory”—that the AR-15 “has little utility for legitimate civilian purposes”—”could be applied against any gun [manufacturer].”

Powell points out that federal law actually prohibits suing gun manufacturers for the misuse of their products. But he believes this suit may test that law or may be intended to somehow bluff Bushmaster into issuing settlements. If the the law fails or settlements result—or both—the suit against Bushmaster turns into a precedent for suits against other AR-15 manufacturers and, eventually, any gun company whose products have been misused.

Gun rights group encourages Floridians to support self defense bill that would permit licensed concealed carry holders to carry concealed firearms at the state’s 135 colleges.

“Too many lives have been lost because of the illusion of safety and security associated with gun-free zones,” said Sean Caranna, executive director of Florida Carry Inc., a grassroots organization dedicated to advancing the fundamental civil right of all Floridians to keep and bear arms. “Where colleges have allowed concealed carry, there has not been a single mass shooting.”

A United States military veteran, of Northern Mariana decent, has filed a complaint in federal court, asking for damages because his second amendment rights have been denied.

The damages appear to be quite clear, as his guns were confiscated upon his arrival in the Islands in July of 2007, and the Department of Public Safety has refused release two rifles to him, even after the issue of a CNMI Firearms, Ammunition, Explosive’s identification card in September of 2007.

Opponents of a new expanded gun background-check measure in Washington state filed a federal lawsuit Tuesday, asking a federal judge to block parts of the law that involve transfers of firearms.

The lawsuit was filed in district court in Tacoma and seeks a permanent injunction against enforcement of parts of Initiative 594 that deal with non-commercial transfers to private citizens. The measure was approved by voters in November.

The suit states that the law is "so vague that a person of ordinary intelligence cannot understand its scope, which renders it subject to arbitrary enforcement."

The second passed over opposition from Second Amendment advocates. The law mirrors existing federal law, and will allow California law enforcement to prosecute people for bringing firearms into the state illegally. Between 59 and 65 percent of guns seized in California are either untraceable or registered outside the state.

The number of homicides in Milwaukee sharply decreased this year compared with 2013.

Preliminary data shows that 87 people were victims of homicide this year, down about 17% from 2013. Since 2005, homicides dipped from 155 victims to a low of 71 in 2008 before gradually rising to 105 last year.

The 2014 data could fluctuate because several death investigations are continuing. The Milwaukee Police Department follows the FBI's national crime reporting standards, which use the date of an individual's death in crime statistics and do not include homicides ruled self-defense. In 2014, seven additional homicides were deemed justifiable self-defense.

Some from the left are beginning to see the light, as in the case of Sen. David Leyonhjelm of Australia's Liberal Democratic Party. A shame it takes a disaster.

A gunman and two hostages died in an hours-long siege at a Sydney cafe earlier this month that ended when police stormed the building. Said Leyonhjelm, "That nutcase who held them all hostage wouldn't have known that they were armed and bad guys don't like to be shot back at," had Australia not become a "nation of victims" because of its stiff restrictions on gun ownership.

A year that ends with the "assassination" of two New York City police officers by a deranged felon using a pawn shop-purchased pistol and an approaching new year that may bring the triumph of Texas gun zealots in the next legislative session leaves us with a couple of questions:

One, if cardinal tenets of conservatism include respect for hard-earned lessons from the past and a willingness to apply those lessons to the present, why do most Texas conservatives ignore those tenets when it comes to firearms?

A mother who was accidentally shot dead by her 2-year-old son in a Walmart supermarket had been carrying the gun in a handbag given to her as a Christmas present, it emerged yesterday.

Veronica Rutledge had a concealed weapons permit for the gun which the toddler, her only child, fired into her at point blank range after finding it in her handbag.

They described the nuclear research scientist, 29, as a ‘beautiful, young, loving mother’ who was ‘taken much too soon’ in the latest gun tragedy in the U.S. where there are more than 32,000 firearm-related deaths a year.

Never doubt the linguistic and logical limberness of professionally coached [privately funded] anti-gun activists.

People in gun control circles are circling their wagons in reaction to a recent Pew Research report definitively showing that more Americans support the Second Amendment than support gun control.
