Firearms Regulation Misses the Target

The mass murderer at the Mandalay Bay Casino in Las Vegas used something called a bump stock. In theory, a bump stock allows a gun to fire faster. Some politicians say that faster is too fast.

That regulation and laws like it miss the point entirely.

Senate Bill 501, sponsored by Senator Rob Wagner (D-19) and Representative Andrea Salinas (D-38), contains numerous, egregious infringements. It would create a permit that would be required to purchase or receive a firearm, with each permit requiring training and being valid for only 90 days, limit purchases to one handgun and one long gun per 30 day period, require firearms be stored in a locked container or with a trigger/cable lock, require reporting of lost or stolen firearms within 24 hours, prohibit the possession of ammunition magazines with a capacity greater than five, require background checks for purchasing ammunition, restrict ammunition purchases to no more than 20 rounds within a 30 day period...

Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) is once again planning to introduce his concealed carry reciprocity bill, something gun owners were promised when President Donald Trump won his election in 2016.

Pro-gun advocates have long advocated for concealed carry reciprocity for a number of reasons. As it currently stands, you can be a law-abiding gun owner and concealed carrier in one state but if you cross into another state with a concealed firearm then you’re breaking the law. Some states allow only residents to carry concealed, even if the person is licensed in another state

The right and the left are set to collide Saturday at dueling protests at the state Capitol.

The conservative group Wisconsin Patriots Alliance announced last month plans to rally for gun rights at the Capitol Saturday at noon, and soon after a coalition of liberal groups led by the Madison chapter of the International Socialist Organization announced their intention to gather for a "Unite Against Fascism" rally starting a half-hour earlier at 11:30 a.m.

Guam is in for another round of debate on a reintroduced "stand your ground" bill which seeks to expand a person's ability to defend himself, including use of deadly force, without first attempting to retreat.

Sen. Joe San Agustin's renewed proposal, Bill 14, would expand Guam's five-year-old castle doctrine.

Under castle doctrine or castle law, a person is justified in using force without first attempting retreat if the person is attacked in his or her home, workplace, or in an occupied vehicle, which is treated as that person's "castle."

So, it’s relatively popular to bash the NRA right now, and we have a lot of folks in our own community that are happy to jump on that bandwagon. I get it. I don’t like where we are at with the 2A situation, either, and I wish the NRA could yell “Shall not be infringed,” from the mountaintops.

Second Amendment supporters want to see President Trump appoint more originalists and textualists to the Supreme Court. The most likely Justice to create an opening is Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

Justice Ginsburg voted against the Heller decision. She voted against the McDonald decision. Her opinion on the Second Amendment is was clear then, and it is clear now. The Second Amendment should be defined as inconsequential because it is old. From armsandthelaw.com:

Cheyenne Mayor Marian Orr says that while she is a big supporter of the Second Amendment, she opposes a bill in the legislature that would repeal gun-free zones in public buildings across the state.

The mayor says her opposition to Senate File 75 is not about being against the ability of state residents to carry guns in public buildings, in fact, she says she would be fine with allowing people to carry firearms into Cheyenne City Council Chambers.

A man who was arrested by Colleton County deputies told them he was exercising his Second Amendment right and believed federal law is greater than state law.

Raymond Allen has been charged with unlawful carrying of a handgun.

A deputy noticed a suspicious man later identified as Allen walking down the sidewalk in front of a Cottageville gas station on Tuesday with a pair of handcuffs, a police baton and a holstered handgun in plain view on his belt, according to sheriff’s officer spokeswoman Shalane Lowes.

Why have there been any more school murders in the USA since the attack at Columbine High School two decades ago? Violent attacks aren’t a mystery. We know why murderers kill. Narcissistic psychopaths and disgruntled sociopaths kill because the media turns these murderers into celebrities. We know the kind of targets they want. We know they will attack unarmed groups of people. We also know how to prevent and how to respond to these attacks. Why haven’t we adopted the measures that save our students? Neither the talking heads nor the politicians want to admit the truth.

LaFave’s House Bills 4026-4029 allow law-abiding holders of concealed pistol licenses to carry in more areas for self-defense and the state in accordance with the constitution of Michigan. The plan would also eliminate the CPL requirement, allowing all legal gun owners to carry anywhere CPL holders are currently allowed to carry.

LaFave noted cases of lawful, responsible gun owners being prosecuted for exercising a right laid out in the U.S. and Michigan constitutions, adding his plan decriminalizes carrying a concealed weapon without a permit, which is currently a five-year felony.

As a rural area, Wyoming County has its share of hunters and firearms enthusiasts.

The NY SAFE Act gun control law met opposition from a wide swath of area residents when it was approved six years ago and Second Amendment rights continue to be a concern for them, which was part of why the county’s Board of Supervisors on Tuesday approved a resolution titled “Opposing Infringements on the Rights of Legitimate Firearm Owners.”

A bill set to appear in the Legislature this year would require Oregonians to obtain a permit before buying a gun, limit the amount of ammunition a person could buy, outlaw magazines with a capacity of more than five rounds and create gun locking and storage requirements.

It's the broadest of more than a dozen bills dealing with guns submitted by lawmakers ahead of the 2019 Legislature, which convenes Jan. 22.

Keane went on to explain the study in plain English, and express what Second Amendment advocates have long intuitively believed about firearm ownership statistics.

“…the states that moved to less restrictive concealed carry policies saw no increase in violent crime, included [sic] homicides,” he said.

What makes the difference between this study and other published in recent years was public data from all 50 states and D.C. from 1986 to 2015 was analyzed completely with no missing variables or cherry-picking.
