"Now, after nearly two decades of service, after being praised by ATF as a hero and earning national awards, the man known as 'Jaybird' is battling his most formidable foe yet: his employer."

"Dobyns, 45, is one of dozens of current and former agents to allege mismanagement and misconduct in the ATF ... More than a dozen lawsuits, administrative claims, grievances, ATF documents and letters to Congress ... accused administrators of betraying their own field investigators and operatives out of arrogance or incompetence." ...

"By any measure, Smooth Talking Mitt Romney had a rough weekend. ... the Boston Herald accused him of abandoning Massachusetts voters, and the Boston Globe highlighted his recent flip-flopping on gun control issues."

"'Smooth talking Mitt Romney's effort to run from his record has hit a rough patch,' said Democratic National Committee spokesman Damien LaVera. ..."

"... Romney is now under fire for trying to distance himself from his record on gun control. In 1994 and 2002, Romney supported the Brady Bill and the assault weapons ban, even bragging that his positions were 'not going to make me the hero of the NRA.' As governor, Romney signed a 2004 law making Massachusetts the first state to pass a permanent assault weapons ban. (Boston Globe, 1/14/06)" ...

"Doctors' sloppy handwriting kills more than 7,000 people annually. It's a shocking statistic, and, according to a July 2006 report from the National Academies of Science's Institute of Medicine (IOM), preventable medication mistakes also injure more than 1.5 million Americans annually. Many such errors result from unclear abbreviations and dosage indications and illegible writing on some of the 3.2 billion prescriptions written in the U.S. every year." ...

"Why are you a member of the NRA? This is a question that has been asked of me on more than one occasion. My answer can not be summed up in a single sentence, but must be examined through a thorough analysis of our Bill of Rights."

"The first Ten Amendments of the United States Constitution bestow upon the private citizen certain unalienable rights, which have been given to us by our creator. Initially they were drafted to protect the private citizen against a powerful national government. They were in essence a compromise between the need for a central governing body, and a recognition that to much power in a central government will ultimately lead to tyranny of an overly powerful government over the people." ...

"That's when the woman acted. She opened the passenger door and got her pistol from the glove box. She says she fired about five shots at the suspect, who ran away."

"Officials say they found Jeffcoat at the Providence NE emergency room. He was there for a gunshot wound to the buttocks." ...

FULL TEXT BELOW:

Regarding "School Team's 'M:I'-Themed Poster Called out of Bounds" (Jan. 5): This is where we are as a society - a gun is now considered a bad thing whenever students are involved.

There was a time, years ago, when you were taught to respect dangerous things and how to use them correctly. Secret agents use guns. Law- enforcement officers carry guns. Our Second Amendment allows them when used safely and for our defense.

Des Moines.

"Currently, licensed gun dealers at gun shows do have to run background checks on customers. But nondealers--say, individuals who just want to sell off part of their own gun collection--do not have to do the checks."

"It's called the 'gun show loophole' ... According to the group Virginians Against Handgun Violence ... 20 percent to 35 percent of vendors at gun shows are unlicensed." ...

"Proponents of tougher state laws governing the sale of firearms ... urged the General Assembly on Monday to require criminal background checks of all buyers at gun shows."

"The measure would close the so-called gun-show loophole, which allows unlicensed dealers to sell firearms at shows in Virginia without conducting the criminal checks required of licensed dealers. Its purpose ... is to prevent criminals who are prohibited from possessing guns from obtaining them ... at gun shows."

"'This is not a bill about taking away anyone's Second Amendment rights,' said Sen. Jeannemarie Devolites Davis (R-Fairfax). 'What this is about is making sure that upstanding citizens possess firearms and that those who are criminals do not.'" ...

"Crime could be the top issue during the contest to succeed Philadelphia Mayor John Street. If last year's total of 406 homicides didn't make that point painfully enough, the tally of at least 17 already this year - more than one per day - should."

"The weapons most used in these killings were guns. That means any meaningful crime reduction strategy must include plans to reduce the flood of illegal weapons in the city."

"Some candidates have already offered ideas, and the rest undoubtedly will. But action can't wait until after the November election. Efforts need to be pushed now in Harrisburg and Washington by the men who would be mayor, and the one who currently holds office." ...

"I could not agree more with A.J. Greffenius' astute analysis of the founders' intent of the Second Amendment. Additionally, in support of the proposition that the amendment is applicable to militias as opposed to individuals is the unmistakably clear wording of the amendment itself."

"The amendment says 'arms'; it does not say muskets or long guns or pistols. The word 'arms' meant in 1789 the same as it means today: all forms of armaments of any kind, including warships, cannons, mortars, bombs and hand grenades as well as muskets and pistols."

"I doubt that even the most ardent supporters of individuals' rights to carry weaponry would suggest that I am given a Second Amendment right to own my own artillery piece ..." ...

Submitter's Note: You are correct Jim. The Second Amendment doesn't give you the right to own artillery, it protects your right to do so. At least, that was the idea.

"On the weekend of January 6th 2007, the Ohio Gun Collectors Association had their first show of the year ... As I walked the aisles admiring the displays of Colt's from the American Civil War and Winchesters of the 'Old West', the PA system came to life, and the voice over my head began talking about how the OGCA was celebrating seventy years in 2007. It made me stop and think to myself."

"'Will there be another seventy years?'"

"The reason for this pessimistic thought is rather obvious. While I was strolling those aisles admiring firearms that were used in the American Revolution and played their role in creating our country, an insidious plot is being hatched in Washington D.C. to kill gun shows." ...

"IT'S a phenomenon that gives the term 'gun control' a whole new meaning: community ordinances that encourage citizens to own guns."

"Last month, Greenleaf, Idaho, adopted Ordinance 208, calling for its citizens to own guns and keep them ready in their homes in case of emergency. It's not a response to high crime rates. As The Associated Press reported, 'Greenleaf doesn't really have crime ... the most violent offense reported in the past two years was a fist fight.' Rather, it's a statement about preparedness in the event of an emergency, and an effort to promote a culture of self-reliance.

"And it may not be a bad idea. While pro-gun laws like the one in Greenleaf are mostly symbolic, to the extent that they actually make a difference, it is likely to be a positive one." ...
