You've seen her name among the College of St. Scholastica (CSS) headlines. Emma Stertz has led the CSS Nordic Ski Team in four races so far this season.

"She's a very talented athlete and she really drives her teammates pretty hard in training which in turn makes them better, which makes our team as a whole better," said CSS Assistant Skiing Coach Reitler Hodgert.

Most of them have been local races. However, beginning Thursday Stertz will ski on an international state as she's qualified for the U.S. Junior Biathlon World Championship Team.

A former Maryland police officer already accused of raping a woman he pulled over during a traffic stop was indicted Tuesday on a new charge after an investigation revealed he is HIV positive.

Martique Vanderpool, 30, of Capitol Heights, Md., is charged with 11 counts, including first-degree rape, reckless endangerment, misconduct in office and knowingly attempting to expose someone to HIV, officials said. He previously worked for the Fairmount Heights (Maryland) Police Department in Prince George's County before resigning in November.

Vanderpool is being held without bond. Stawinski asked anyone who also may have been victimized by Vanderpool to please call (301) 856-2660.

I listened to Billionaire Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s remarks after the attack at the West Freeway Church of Christ in Texas.

‘It is the job of law enforcement to have guns and to decide when to shoot.
You don’t want average citizens to have guns in public. That is the job of the police.’

This was a prepared speech so we have to assume Mayor Bloomberg meant what he said. One mistake is an accident, two mistakes are carelessness, and three or more falsehoods are propaganda.

Gun rights advocates in Michigan are looking for a way to keep their firearms even if laws change by making the state a Second Amendment sanctuary.

They're hoping it will also discourage further gun control measures in the state.

"We are consistently seeing our rights as Americans -- and especially in the Second Ammendment role -- constantly erode," said State Rep. Phil Green, who is one of 15 legislators behind a House resolution to declare Michigan a Second Amendment sanctuary state.

The move comes after Virginia legislators are pushing for tighter gun control measures, including a red flag law, where police would be able to take guns from people deemed a danger to themselves or others.

While the agenda was light, the meeting room was packed Tuesday, Jan. 21, for the monthly board meeting of the Jackson County Board of Commissioners.

Dozens of people showed up with a resolution, asking commissioners to declare Jackson County a “Second Amendment sanctuary county.” Numerous board members expressed support, but sent the proposed resolution to county attorneys before considering a decision.

The board will likely vote on the resolution at the 7 p.m. meeting Feb. 18, board members said. Meetings are hosted on the fifth floor of the Jackson County Tower Building, 120 W. Michigan Ave.

It was a packed house for Thursday’s meeting to make the county a Second Amendment Sanctuary.

Jason Potts is the spokesperson from the Kentucky United Daviess County Chapter, which is a community group interested in protecting rights they say are guaranteed by the constitution.

“When I see any possible infringements on that, I bristle instantly, and I want to do anything I can to stop those infringements,” Potts explained.

The passage of the resolution comes after several counties across the state have adopted similar declarations. Metcalfe County most recently heard from its citizens at a Jan. 14 meeting of the fiscal court. However, the court tabled discussion so an updated resolution could be drafted.

These days more people are carrying weapons -- especially guns -- for personal safety. And, if and when you do act in self-defense some are now seeking added protection from lawsuits.

You may have heard of cases where a victim defends himself from an attacker, and then that injured criminal suspect sues the victim for damages. And that's part of what's led to more people seeking legal protection.

"You can be sued or charged and not even fire the gun. You pulled it out and threatened them," John Harris with the Tennessee Firearms Association said.

Federal Ammunition has introduced a new line of defensive loads called Punch ammo. Punch provides a great option for common self-defense use—where performance through more complex duty barriers, like those in the FBI protocol test, are less likely to be a factor.

“Many personal defenders think, ‘If it works for law enforcement then it’s good for me.’ That is a great guideline and still our ultimate recommendation,” said Federal Handgun Product Manager Chris Laack. “But that may add features not required for everyday carry for everyone.”

Gun rights, property rights and religious liberty collided in an Iowa Senate subcommittee Thursday.

In the end, the Second Amendment prevailed as the panel advanced Senate File 459 that would prohibit employers from banning employees from carrying firearms to the job site if they have permits to carry. Employees would have to keep the firearms and ammunition out of sight and inside a locked vehicle.

Later, another subcommittee signed off on a bill allowing people with a permit to carry to have a gun in their vehicle when transporting children to and from school if they remain in the vehicle in a parking area or driveway.

Building on the success of its MC1sc, Mossberg has released a compact double stack that works as well in an IWB rig as it does ringing steel in competition.

Logically called the MC2c, designating it an extension of its smaller predecessor, the compact pistol boasts a 13-round flush-fit magazine and a 15-round extended alternative. The pistol ships in five different combinations, depending on whether one desires a stainless or black slide, TruGlo Tritium Pro Night Sights or a cross-bolt safety.

So, Day Two of SHOT Show 2020 is in the books. Another day of meetings, frantic rushing to and from different exhibits and booths, and reconnecting with industry friends down, two more to go.  QUOTES TO REMEMBER
A strong body makes the mind strong. As to the species of exercises, I advise the gun. While this gives moderate exercise to the body, it gives boldness, enterprise, and independence to the mind. Games played with the ball and others of that nature, are too violent for the body and stamp no character on the mind. Let your gun therefore be the constant companion of your walks. — Thomas Jefferson, Encyclopedia of T. Jefferson, 318, Foley, Ed., reissued 1967.
