Ad and Elizabeth “Plinky” Toepperwein were renowned exhibition shooters for Winchester ammunition and guns, demonstrating their skills across the country with revolvers, rifles and shotguns. These two inscribed revolvers from this sharpshooting husband-and-wife pair were recently reunited and illustrate the special modifications used by both individuals. Period engraving and custom grip panels of jigged bone made to resemble staghorn characterize both of these Colt target handguns, which are both based on the Officers Model Target revolver and chambered for the .38 Spl. cartridge.

Arkansas concealed handgun instructors said Tuesday they need more details on how to prepare for a new state law that allows guns on college campuses, government buildings and some bars for those who undergo additional training. A dozen instructors aired concerns about the rules for carrying out the law approved earlier this year allowing concealed handgun licensees to carry at the new locations if they undergo up to eight hours in additional training.

By now it is a familiar scene.

A group of politicians and law enforcement officials gather to bemoan another outbreak of gun violence. This time it was a basketball court at the Bennett Homes housing project in Chester. District Attorney Jack Whelan led a phalanx of officials and lawmen to bemoan still another spike in gun violence in Chester. They stood on the court, where just a few nights before gunmen had sprayed the court with gunfire. It was part of one more violent weekend in the city, one where police were investigating as many as five shooting incidents that left eight people injured. Thankfully, none of the injuries were considered life-threatening.

When Argentina decided to adopt a self-loading pistol for its military, it chose wisely. At first, the country purchased .45 ACP 1911 variants directly from Colt in Hartford, but then eventually commenced domestic production of the M1911A1 design as the 11.25 mm Sistema Colt 27. Argentina’s Dirección General de Fabricaciones Militares (the General Directorate of Military Manufacturing, or “DGFM”) made these pistols at the Fábrica Militar de Armas Portátiles (Military Small Arms Factory, or “FMAP”) in Rosario, 200 miles upriver from Buenos Aires.

I wasn't too sure what to expect as I drove through the gates of Rabbit Creek Shooting Park on my way to learn more about kids and shotguns and how to combine the two with positive outcomes. It was Tuesday night, time for the weekly practice of knocking clay pigeons out of the sky.

Rabbit Creek Youth Shotgun League coach Ginamaria Smith was already there with her husband, Kyle, and the two were trying to organize kids into groups and make sure everyone had eye and ear protection and a vest for the pockets-full of shells each gun required.

The kids scrambled to grab gloves and hats and headed to the storage room, where 12- and 20-gauge shotguns lined the walls.

The Washington State Department of Licensing reported Tuesday afternoon that the state has passed the 590,000 mark for active concealed pistol licenses, indicating continued growth in the number of legally-armed citizens.

This comes just one week before a bitterly-contested legislative race that could change the balance of power in the state capitol is decided. Anti-gunners at the Seattle-based Alliance for Gun Responsibility have been pouring lots of energy and raising money to tilt the State Senate to Democrat control with the hoped-for election of Manka Dhingra over Republican Jinyoung Lee to fill the seat left vacant by the death of State Sen. Andy Hill.

The Roundup spoke with the president of the Richland County Sportman's Club, Larry Christensen, who explained the plans. "Right now," Christensen said, "we're still in the process of looking for land. We have four different locations picked out, and we're trying to get into contact with the proper people and go from there."

No gun control dog-and-pony show would be complete without Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) eventually grabbing the mic and pontificating in the spotlight in a choreographed press conference staged for the TV-educated. On Oct. 25, Murphy demonstrated that he, too, is doing something about gun violence by proposing a bill that he admits has no chance of passing. But that doesn’t matter. What matters is he is doing something.

Hunting is in decline. We’ve all seen and heard the depressing numbers. Many of us have given talks and written articles espousing the benefits of the outdoor lifestyle and encouraging the next generation to seek adventures that can only be experienced afield. We scream from the rafters, “Hunters are the real conservationists!!” While our messages are true, they’re falling on deaf ears. Our increasingly urbanized society moves on about their busy lives disconnected from the world we live in.

One month after the massacre in Las Vegas, U.S. Reps. Dan Kildee and Dave Trott are introducing a bipartisan bill to regulate bump stock devices under the National Firearms Act, similar to the strict controls on machine gun ownership.

Bump stocks are the devices that allowed the Vegas gunman to modify his semiautomatic rifles to fire at a rate similar to a machine gun, without actually converting the firearms to a fully automatic weapon. The devices are not prohibited under federal or Michigan law.

Washington State Attorney General Bob Ferguson has revealed plans to revive his gun control agenda for the 2018 legislative session, and he is once again declaring his push to ban so-called “assault rifles” a matter of “public safety,” according to the Aberdeen Daily World.

But the FBI Uniform Crime Reports over the past several years essentially derail that argument, because in Washington, and across the nation, rifles of any kind account for a small fraction of all homicides.

An Indiana legislative panel proved gun shy Monday, when members avoided directly endorsing a proposal that would eliminate Indiana’s law requiring a license to carry a handgun in public. The Joint Committee on Judiciary and Public Policy had spent more than 10 hours in recent months hearing testimony on the proposal by Republican Rep. Jim Lucas, of Seymour, who argues that the license requirement infringes on the U.S. Constitution’s Second Amendment.
