"Parenting books on teenagers are less likely to contain injury prevention messages than those that give advice on parenting small children." ...

"Prevention of automobile mishaps and burns were the most commonly addressed injury prevention topics in the books focused on younger children, while gun safety was the leading topic in books about adolescents, researchers found."

"'We were especially surprised by how little attention the adolescent parenting books devoted to motor vehicle safety, which is the most important injury problem for adolescents,' said Wanda M. Hunter, senior author of the paper and associate professor of social medicine at the UNC School of Medicine." [emphasis added]

Submitter's Note: But according to Sarah and her ilk gun violence is the 'most important injury problem for adolescents'!

"Let me start out by saying that I'm an unabashed fan of assault rifle/small arms systems that provide relatively long barrel lengths in compact packages. Troops in the Afghan and Iraqi theaters of operation want agile shoulder weapons that they can fight from vehicles with, clear buildings and rooms and at the same time deal effectively with the enemy at 500 yards. ..." ...

The space aged looking rifle has integrated the most modern amalgamation of Aluminum, steel, titanium, and glass fiber reinforced synthetics for individual parts and assemblies in a successful effort to achieve the lightest package and still maintain the highest possible strength and durability." ...

"Back in August, DefRev published a short article on the Smith and Wesson Military and Police pistol ... Well, DefenseReview just got to handle the new S&W M&P at IACP 2005 Miami, and we must say the gun looks and feels really good. The striker-fired M&P is extremely comfortable in the hand, due the shape and texture of the grip, although some people think the grip needs to be texturized more for a more secure hold while firing with sweaty hands. The grip size can be adjusted by switching out 'grip straps' of different sizes. ... The standard S&W M&P pistol's grip is pretty long and provides more than enough length for most hands, and the grip angle appears perfect for natural pointing--and thus point shooting." ...

"One of the driving ideas behind the adaptation of the 'Black Rifle' and its varmint caliber ammunition was to lighten the load of the ground pounding Infanteer. That was achieved through remarkable engineering, but it didn't take long for the soldier to reverse the situation. The new light weight rounds enabled the trooper to up his basic load of the M14 rifle's 7.62x51mm/.308 Win. from 120 rounds to 400 of the 5.56x45mm/.223 Rem., or carry more grenades, anti tank rockets or mortar rounds into the fight. Weight wise, little changed and this continues today at an even more accelerated pace with the addition of scopes, lasers, electronic optics, grenade launchers and etc. ..." ...

"A national group in conjunction with the Fort Worth Police Department will spend time this week distributing free gun locks to gun owners."

"Project Child Safe representatives were at Cabela’s in Fort Worth not only giving out the locks to patrons, but more importantly educating them on the safe storage of their weapons."

"Project Child Safe tours the country and currently is on a 40-day tour across Texas."

"The program is designed to promote firearm safety and educate gun owners." ...

"It's hard to imagine Sayre Weaver as the California gun lobby's Public Enemy No. 1. Slight and soft-spoken, the Yale-educated attorney doesn't march or testify or legislate."

"She litigates. Relentlessly. With a laser-sharp focus that has delivered a series of body blows to an industry long accustomed to beating back efforts at gun control."

"For 10 years, Weaver has been working to staunch the flow of 'Saturday night specials' ... the weapon of choice in the criminal milieu."

"In 1996, she helped West Hollywood officials draft and defend California's first local ordinance aimed at curtailing handgun sales. ... making California a national leader in restricting handgun access." ...

KABA Note: Interesting how they frame the results as "restricting handgun access" rather than as 'reducing crime' which was supposed to be the result.

"You wouldn’t expect the Wall Street Journal to be writing about hunting, but on November 5, the nation’s leading business newspaper went on a shooting spree with three articles on the subject."

"Of primary interest to me was Hunting’s Identity Crisis, a long piece tackling several hot button issues in the hunting community. For starters, it documented the shrinking numbers of hunters and poor recruitment among America’s youth—and how hunters aim to make a comeback. 'Despite its image as a heartland fixture—and its influence in the world of lobbying and politics—the sport is struggling,' writes Ellen Gamerman." ...

"We're used to spotting lawlessness and corruption around the world and at home: in Iraq, or Saudi Arabia, or large no-bid contracts to Halliburton out of Washington. The cure for such ills is usually some version of the rule of law and probably its most basic principle—that the rules apply to everyone, including the richest, the most powerful, and the most connected."

"But corruption and lawlessness are not limited to human rights violations or greedy hands in large tills. In the past two weeks, Congress and the president have exempted one industry from the most basic legal rules that apply to all other industries and individuals: They have enacted unprecedented legislation giving the gun industry immunity from lawsuits based on federal or state laws to which everyone else is subject. ..." ...

"With warring gangs igniting a surge in homicides here in the last year, voters on Tuesday will consider a sweeping proposal to curb the violence: the nation's strictest municipal gun control ordinances, a measure that would ban possession, sale and manufacture of handguns and ammunition within city limits."

"Polling data taken over the summer suggested that the measure, Proposition H, enjoyed overwhelming support of likely voters. But it has since come under attack from a coalition of critics - including the National Rifle Association and a smattering of community groups - and legal experts say that should it pass, it is likely to face a stiff challenge in state courts." ...

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
Our Founding Fathers were proud that Americans were trusted with arms because they knew that only when people are armed could they truly be thought of as free citizens. And that's where the circle closes. Those who want to deprive you of your right to keep and bear arms are intending to deprive you of your freedom, period. Like the criminals their policies encourage, these elitists know that it is always best to disarm victims before you enslave them. — Charley Reese
