Tacoma Mall Shooting Illustrates Threat to Public Safety from Unregulated Sale of Firearms through the Classifieds: Group

"The recent mass shooting at a Tacoma, Wash., shopping mall dramatically illustrates how the unregulated sale of firearms through classified ads in newspapers poses a potential hazard to a newspaper's readers and the general public." ...

"Maldonado, who is prohibited from possessing firearms because of a series of felony convictions as a juvenile, purchased the MAK 90 7.62mm rifle from Joe Pasamonte, a private gun owner. Whereas licensed firearms dealers are required to conduct criminal background checks on all buyers, unlicensed sellers who sell firearms from a 'personal collection' are not required to conduct background checks. By purchasing the rifle from an unlicensed seller in a private transaction, Maldonado was able to evade the mandatory criminal background check required on all dealer sales." ...

"The gun of choice these days for criminals and law enforcement officers is the .40-caliber semiautomatic, but the 9 mm is a close second for criminal use, region ATF officials say."

"'It's strange because in the 1980s and the 1990s it was the 9 mm, but the .40-caliber is becoming more popular,' said agent Dan Mitten, of the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives office in Merrillville."

"Manufacturers that sell many different .40-caliber models in a variety of sizes contribute to the attraction, he said."

"In addition, criminals like to mimic the fire power used by police, who are increasingly turning to the .40 caliber, he said." ...

"'Guns don’t kill people; people kill people.'"

"Years ago this was a bumper sticker that was seen on many cars. I often thought it should have an addendum, 'People with guns kill people much more easily than people without guns.'"

"A gun nut friend of mine once read a newspaper report to me about a man killing another man with a baseball bat. His point was that people kill people with things other than guns. While this is true, baseball bats have a range the length of the bat plus the length of the arms of the one wielding the bat." ...

... "The event in Providence, Rhode Island, yields one of the most spectacular finds of militaria in ROADSHOW history: a rifle, powder horn and account book passed down through six generations of the same Rhode Island family. And not just any family. Appraiser Bill Guthman identified the original owner and the gun’s maker as Welcome Matheson, one of the premier New England gun makers of the early 19th century. This incredibly rare and intact collection of objects commands an insurance value of $100,000 to $120,000." ...

"You might remember a couple of weeks ago when I told you about the 8-year-old girl that made national headlines recently by taking the first black bear of the season in Maryland."

"I expected more feedback from some of you on this topic, but I only received one e-mail on it ... the question, 'Don't you think 8 is a little young to hunt?'"

"I replied and told him that I did not. ..."

"I did some research on the topic, though, and was surprised to learn that our heavily regulated friends to the north don't have a minimum age for hunting. Just as long as the hunter has passed the Maryland hunter safety course, he or she may hunt. I personally don't have a problem with that." ...

"The sky's the limit for some shooters when they're in the market for a 1911-style pistol. There is no feature too insignificant or any price tag too high for compromise. Not everyone is so fortunate that cost is not a factor, and for budget-conscious shooters, it's important to do their homework before putting hard-earned dollars down for a mid-priced 1911. Impulse buying in the mid-priced category can result in the purchase of a piece of junk while carefully researched buying can end with you being a very satisfied customer."

"'One dog had bitten one of the sheeps' necks and wasn't letting go, even though the sheep was dragging him around the pen,' Garcia said. 'I had to wait to take aim until I could hit the dog without hitting the sheep. Once I shot him, he let go of her neck.'"

The student became “agitated and combative” when officers moved in and retrieved the weapon, police said.

"Attorney General Jim Petro filed a legal brief defending the constitutionality of Ohio's concealed carry law against a challenge by the city of Toledo."

"'We believe the concealed carry law is an issue of statewide concern and prevents cities from enacting bans because statewide law supercedes local laws,' said Attorney General Jim Petro."

"Petro filed a friend of the court brief in the Court of Appeals for the Sixth Appellate District (Lucas County) in the case of City of Toledo v. Beatty. This case involves an appeal of the conviction of a concealed handgun license holder for carrying a concealed handgun in a Toledo park in violation of a local ordinance. "Not to worry. The dozens of dealers at the Fireside Inn gun show came well armed. Andrew Heggie, a Randolph police officer, spotted a Bushmaster, similar to the rifle he carried in two tours of duty in Afghanistan. And he found an AK-47, the same gun the enemy carried.
