"The Second Amendment Foundation has won a huge victory for the right to bear arms outside the home, with a ruling in the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals that declares the right to self-defense is 'broader than the right to have a gun in one’s home.'"

"The case of Moore v. Madigan, with Judge Richard Posner writing for the majority, gives the Illinois legislature 180 days to 'craft a new gun law that will impose reasonable limitations, consistent with the public safety and the Second Amendment…on the carrying of guns in public.'" ...

"Lawyers for Rick and Ryin Reese, New Mexico gun dealers imprisoned without bail for well over a year, 'filed a motion to release them until their sentencing date,' a source close to the case informed supporters this morning."

"'The motion is set for [a hearing on] Tuesday, December 18, 2012, at 10:30 a.m. in the Federal Courthouse in Judge Brack's courtroom,' the source announced."

"'Anyone who can attend would be WONDERFUL,' the source continued. 'If you can't be there, please keep us in your prayers for release of the guys after 477 days in jail.'" ...

"Guns continue to thrust themselves into people’s hands with deadly consequences. Once a gun has forced itself upon somebody, that person loses all control over and responsibility for his actions. ... "Even the most rabid forcible citizen disarmament advocates seem to have accepted the reality that there is no way in the foreseeable future to ban all rifle ammunition capable of penetrating soft body armor ... 'Armor piercing' ammo restrictions thus focus on handgun ammunition.

"The conflict lies in the fact that the distinction between 'handgun ammo' and 'rifle ammo' is a largely artificial one. Handguns can be chambered for any round a rifle can be ... This means that rifle ammunition constructed of the materials listed in the 1986 law is perfectly legal--until someone builds a handgun that can fire it, and the BATFE decides not to grant that ammo a 'sporting purposes' exemption." ...

... "But does Media Matters care to discuss the hypocrisy of State Sen. Donne Trotter? Does media Matters ask the question this column did yesterday about how Costas played down the tragic death of Dallas Cowboys linebacker Jerry Brown because it didn’t involve a gun, but drunk driving ...?"

"Heck, no. The liberal watchdog group instead blasts [Emily] Miller for alluding to a common estimate about the number of times annually that private citizens use firearms for self-defense. And they alleged that in the process, Miller 'downplays gun violence,' an accusation that is specious at best. Miller’s column was about liberal hypocrisy regarding firearms, and Media Matters is trying to change the debate." ...

... "In October, I posted a graphic developed by Rob Vance that showed the progress in the growth of firearms carry rights from 1986 through 2011 as a percentage of the U.S. population. In 1986, 90% of the U.S. population lived in states that severely restricted carry rights or had none at all. Today, over two-thirds of Americans live in states with either shall-issue carry or constitutional carry. The conclusion was that shall-issue is the new norm."

"We covered the .22 TCM round when it was first introduced in a handgun by RIA / Armscor, and it kinda made sense. A zippy .22 caliber round coming out of a handgun can be useful, which is why FN likes their funky 5.7 caliber thingers. But after a full year of it being out there, no one else has picked up the round for production in another firearm. I had assumed that the round had simply died a quiet and dignified death, but apparently I was wrong. Now Armscor is about to introduce a bolt action rifle chambered for .22 TCM . . ." ...

"7075-T6 aluminum has had a pretty good run as the materiel of choice for AR lower receivers, but it’s no longer the only game in town. Taking advantage of the lower weight and manufacturing costs of space-age polymers, New Frontier Armory sells an all-polymer AR-15 lower receiver with a price so low ($109 complete) that even cautious shooters are reaching for their wallets and asking themselves, 'Why the hell not?” And why the hell not? Your financial exposure is pretty small if a $109 purchase doesn’t work out, but the real question is “Does the damned thing work?” Even the lowest-priced gun has very little value if it’s unsafe or unreliable . . ." ...

How could a Chicago Democrat—a member of a state legislature that’s denied its law-abiding citizens their Constitutionally protected right to keep and bear arms—carry a pistol? Hypocrite! ... "We need a robust debate in this country about the modern relevance of the Second Amendment to the Constitution. This amendment, ratified in 1791, provided for the right of Americans in an early, primitive, dangerous time in our history to defend themselves by force, if necessary. Why continue an 18th century Wild West vigilante culture of private handgun ownership in the 21st century?" ...

"When the elections are in full swing and your phone is ringing off the hook with fundraising calls, those on the other end of the line are quick to point out the strong support for gun rights that is one of the hallmark issues in the GOP platform."

"'If we have all three branches of state government under Republican control, then we can finally pass the important pro-gun legislation that the Democrats have been blocking.' said one determined operative to me last year as they pleaded for me to bring out my checkbook once again."

"But now that Virginia’s government is completely controlled by Republicans, there is suddenly a sense of hesitation to move forward on issues that gun rights advocates have been working on for years ..." ...

"Over the past year, both before and since the elections, there have been a number of court cases challenging Barack Hussein Obama’s eligibility. Most of the cases have been dismissed by judges for reasons that are not truly legitimate ..." ...

"Yet another case filed in Alabama may present one of the best chances of producing a ruling against Obama. In this case, Hugh McInnish and others have filed suit against Alabama Secretary of State Beth Chapman for failure to properly verify the eligibility of Barack Obama. The case points out that the state constitution requires the Secretary of State to verify a candidate’s eligibility and that Chapman failed to accurately verify Obama’s eligibility." ...

"When police officers announced this year’s gun buy-back program would allow residents to exchange their guns for Wal-Mart gift certificates, they never expected a woman possessing a World War II-era Nazi Assault Rifle to take the bait."

"But that’s exactly what happened in Hartford, Conn. over the weekend."

"Just like a scene out of 'Antiques Roadshow,' a woman in Hartford, Conn., turned in an old rifle to her local police station's gun buy-back, only to discover the gun was worth anywhere from $20,000 to $25,000. The woman, who wishes to remain anonymous, inherited the gun from her father who had brought it home with him from Europe as a memento from World War II."

"The two officers conducting the gun buy-back, who are resident gun experts for the Hartford Police Department, informed the owner she was in possession of a Nazi Assault Rifle, the first of its kind, that dates back to 1944."

"The gun is called a Sturmgewehr 44, literally meaning 'storm rifle,' and is the first 'modern assault rifle ever made ...'" ...

"Courtesy of Say Uncle, the NRA has caught indication of what could be a very important ATF ruling, if not for what it does, certainly for the precedent it sets."
"The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is taking public comments on its website until December 31, with regard to how it should determine what types of projectiles meet the 'sporting purposes' exception to the federal 'armor piercing ammunition' law. At this time, the question centers primarily around rifle-caliber projectiles made of metals harder than lead, such as the Barnes Bullets solid brass hunting bullets." ...

"On NBC Sports, Peter King has claimed that at least 7 NFL players have turned in personally owned firearms to team security officers since Jovan Belcher’s murder of his girlfriend and subsequent suicide."

"He even quotes one player, who turned in a reported 8 guns, as having said that 'I don’t trust myself with these guns in the house, please take them away.'"

"However, I remain skeptical."

Such reports seem entirely too convenient for an NFL organization that is reeling for the second time in as many weeks over the death of a player, this time by drunk driving." ...

"Whenever international comparisons of homicide rates are studied, you have to be sure to consider the Swiss. Not only does Switzerland have very low homicide rates, it has one of the highest levels of gun ownership in the world. A state of affairs that many consider related. As I attempted to find out what the gun homicide rate for Switzerland was, I ran into a curious phenomena. The most commonly quoted figures for gun homicides were for both gun homicides and attempted gun homicides. In one source . . ." ...

Judge Posner’s opinion for a 2-1 panel of the 7th Circuit. Illinois is the only state which forbids gun carrying in public as a matter of law. There is no provision for the issuance of licenses for concealed carry, or for open carry. Both are banned. There are some exceptions for particular activities (e.g., while hunting), and for persons with a special occupational status (e.g., licensed security guard, some government officials).

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
There's no way to rule innocent men. The only power any government has is the power to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren't enough criminals, one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible to live without breaking laws. — AYN RAND
