MI: Kalamazoo board of education bans all guns on school property

Every Kalamazoo public school is now a gun-free zone.
With the support of a packed room of activist groups, parents and students, the Kalamazoo Public Schools Board of Education voted unanimously Thursday to pass a policy prohibiting all weapons from school-affiliated property. The policy, which applies outside school hours, prohibits students, staff and visitors from carrying a gun regardless of a concealed weapons permit.
People who violate the policy will be referred to law enforcement officials, and either the superintendent or a designee may take other actions necessary to enforce the policy. Guns under the control of law enforcement are allowed. |

A Lothian man shot a burglar twice Thursday morning — once in the head — after he tried to attack him and his wife in their home, Anne Arundel County police said.
Officer Marc Limansky, police spokesman, said the shooting happened at a house on Mullen Lane, a stretch of large single-family homes in a rural portion of the county.
Police said an unidentified man tried to break into the home while the couple living there was at home.
The couple confronted the man and tried to unsuccessfully to force him out of their home, Limansky said. Armed with a handgun, the man shot the intruder in the leg. |

President Donald Trump’s election has encouraged gun rights advocates to mount a new legislative push in states across the country.
Legislators in more than a dozen states have introduced bills to allow residents to carry guns in the open, roll back licensing requirements for concealed weapons and limit the number of facilities where guns are prohibited. Measures in several states would allow those with licenses to carry firearms in schools, airports and churches. |

A bill that would allow public colleges and universities and medical centers in Kansas to continue to prohibit firearms, despite a 2013 law that permits the concealed carry of handguns in all public buildings, was shot down by a Kansas Senate committee Tuesday, reports The Wichita Eagle.
Republican Senator Jacob LaTurner, who chairs the committee, opposed the bill, saying, “I’m comfortable with the vote that I made in 2013. I think it allowed enough time for folks to make accommodations.” |

Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt has asked congressional leaders to take action to protect Second Amendment rights of Social Security beneficiaries, according to a news release.
A group of 13 state attorneys general, including Schmidt, Wednesday urged congressional leaders to repeal an overreaching federal regulation that they said denies certain Social Security beneficiaries the right to keep and bear arms, according to the release. |

As such, it should not be infringed upon by any judge, panel, or group of politicians. The right to carry a concealed weapon is an extension of the Second Amendment and therefore is not negotiable.
Within ten day of being elected governor of the State of New Jersey, I intend to propose a number of changes to New Jersey’s firearms laws.
These changes will provide the citizens of our state a clear and constitutional pathway to purchase firearms and carry concealed weapons. One change will be very simple. When you get your permit to purchase, you will not need to get an additional permit to carry. |

There are many Kansas legislators who should not be sleeping well these days. Their guilty consciences should keep them awake.
There have long been people who have wondered how legislators sleep at night after passing some of the fiscal policies that have created tremendous budgetary strain for the state. But now it appears that actions by lawmakers may land a couple of perhaps-unwitting Kansans in jail.
Lawmakers in 2013 passed the Kansas Second Amendment Protection Act, which says firearms, accessories and ammunition manufactured and kept within the borders of Kansas are exempt from federal gun control laws. Kansas lawmakers passed the law despite being plainly told that it was in conflict with federal law. |

Lawmakers in the House on Tuesday voted to send measures expanding permitless carry and to allow guns on post office property to the Montana Senate.
The bills passed along party lines 60-39 and would update to the state’s concealed carry laws while potentially setting the stage for a potential Tenth Amendment challenge with the federal government.

State Attorney General Bob Ferguson is working to control ownership of some rifles and high-capacity magazines in Washington state, but most local law enforcement leaders disagree with him.
Senate Bill 5050, introduced in the state Senate on Jan. 9, would ban the sale of “assault weapons” and magazines capable of carrying more than 10 rounds. The bill is before the Law and Justice Committee for review. |

This is the Campus Carry legislation introduced by state Representative Charlie Collins (R-84), which seeks to achieve a safer environment for public college and university residents, employees and visitors. On Wednesday, the Wyoming House of Representatives passed House Bill 194 in a landslide vote of 46-14.
The nature of the bill, known as “The School Safety and Security Act,” is such that it would allow school districts decide whether or not they would allow their employees to carry on school grounds, provided they have a concealed carry permit.
The bill found opposition from both sides of the argument, with anti-gun legislators stating that guns have no place in schools, and those who didn’t think the law went far enough, as it still allowed school districts to refuse to allow firearms on campus by legal carriers. |
