Time and time again, this election cycle has been disrupted by news of mass shootings. In light of those events, candidates have been pressed for their strategies to address gun regulations.

Democrats have advocated for universal background checks and tighter gun control measures, clamoring to be the toughest candidate to go against the National Rifle Association.

Republicans have promised to defend the Second Amendment and block further restrictions on gun ownership.

And with each tragedy, the party lines that divide candidates on gun regulation have only gotten deeper.

Maine lawmakers will consider a bill that would lift the ban on owning firearms in public housing.

The issue came to light back in September when a tenant in a section 8 apartment in Rockland shot an intruder. Harvey Lembo's home had been broken into several times before he bought a gun to protect himself. he was then informed by the management company guns are banned and if he didn't get rid of it he'd have to leave.

An Iowa House committee passed a barrage of gun-related bills Thursday, most of which were similar to proposals that have failed to win legislative approval in previous years.

The House Judiciary Committee dispatched bills to make possession and use of a firearm suppressor legal, limit the governor’s authority to restrict the use of guns and ammunition in declared emergencies and to allow children of any age to possess a handgun while under the supervision of a parent, guardian or firearms instructor.

When a federal appeals court ruled Thursday that the Maryland ban on so-called “assault weapons” created a substantial burden on the right “to arm oneself at home,” it may have set the stage for a legal confrontation that “could have national importance” because of the potential impact on similar bans elsewhere, the Baltimore Sun indicated.

The 2-1 ruling, in a case called Kolbe v. Maryland, came from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. It was immediately hailed by gun rights leaders, and criticized by anti-gunners. Maryland Attorney General Brian E. Frosh, who supported the law as a state senator, contended that the appeals court majority is wrong, the Washington Post reported.

Today the 4th Circuit decided Kolbe v. Hogan, a Second Amendment challenge to a 2013 Maryland arms prohibition statute. The statute bans the sale of firearm magazines that hold more than 10 rounds and also bans many firearms, by labeling them as “assault weapons.” In a 2-1 decision written by Chief Judge Traxler, the Fourth Circuit held that strict scrutiny is the proper standard of review for bans on common arms, such as those at issue in Kolbe. The case was remanded to the district court, which had applied the wrong standard, namely a weak version of intermediate scrutiny. The Maryland attorney general announced that he will seek en banc or Supreme Court reversal of the Kolbe decision.

Members of ASU's Students for Self-Defense club stood in front of ASU Tempe's Memorial Union on Thursday, hoping to collect student opinions about weapons on campus in the form of sticky notes.

The Arizona Legislature is considering a bill that would make firearms legal on college campuses. House Bill 2072 was introduced in January by Rep. Sonny Borrelli, R-Bullhead City. The bill would essentially allow students and faculty at all public universities, colleges and community colleges to carry concealed weapons on campus. However, the gun owners would still need to get a concealed-carry permit from the Department of Public Safety.

My experience in the media has exposed me to far too many tragedies resulting from high-profile shootings. Of the disturbing images, perhaps the most harrowing came from the attack on a military recruitment center in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Outside the building, where an intruder shot and killed five unarmed Marines, was a sign declaring “No guns allowed,” sprawled across spiderwebbed glass, shattered by bullet holes.

One could attribute the occurrence to simple irony if violence in “gun-free zones” was uncommon. Columbine, Virginia Tech, Sandy Hook and that Chattanooga recruitment center all prohibited firearms, yet they appear in this article only because of the bloodshed that took place.

Maryland's assault weapons ban implicates core Second Amendment rights and must be reviewed under a more rigorous judicial standard than the one used by a judge who upheld the law's constitutionality, a divided federal appeals court ruled Thursday.

A three-judge panel of the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals sent the case back to U.S. District Judge Catherine C. Blake for further proceedings, giving the gun-rights supporters who challenged the law another chance to argue it should be overturned.

"This is not a finding that Maryland's law is unconstitutional," Judge William B. Traxler Jr. wrote. "It is simply a ruling that the test of its constitutionality is different from that used by the district court."

They also dropped off comments from potential vacationers living outside of Florida, saying they might not visit Orlando if open carry becomes legal.

Today, of course, we know better. Oncologists who’ve treated patients suffering from throat cancer will tell you that those old claims are bunk. They sure sounded authoritative back in the day, though. Some advice on gunfight survival goes back to the same era. And some of it is just as suspect. Let’s look at a few examples.

Two months after terrorists gunned down 14 unarmed San Bernardino county workers in a gun-free zone, one local official is calling for county employees to be permitted to carry guns at work and have access to weapons at county facilities.

The proposal made by First District Supervisor Robert Lovingood would have to be approved by the Board of Supervisors, but Longwood said it’s time “to make a strategic shift.” The plan has yet to be formally presented, FOX11 reported.

In what has to be viewed as a major victory for gun owners, the United States Court of Appeals for 4th Circuit ruled that lower court judge in Kolbe V. Maryland must apply the standard of strict scrutiny in reviewing the case about Maryland’s “assault weapon” ban, duplicitously called the Firearms Safety Act (FSA).

Laws banning “assault weapons” in Maryland and in other states with “anti-gun” legislatures have typically been upheld when lower court judges—almost universally gun-hating activist liberals—have cheated We, The People by applying the much lower standard of intermediate scrutiny.

A bill that would have allowed concealed weapon permit holders to bring guns into the South Dakota Capitol has failed in committee.

The Senate Judiciary Committee Thursday voted down the plan that would have removed from state law a prohibition from carrying in the Capitol.

The proposal would have allowed state officials including the governor, constitutional officers, legislative leaders and Supreme Court justices to post signs barring concealed weapons in galleries or offices.

It seems that after almost every article I write on self defense for women, people write, "Get a gun! Get a gun!" Yes, I agree, a gun is an excellent tool to deter crime and to prevail in a violent encounter. I teach gun safety and the Conceal and Carry class in my state and well over half my students are women. Here are five questions I go through with them to help determine whether they are ready to purchase their firearm.

The National Rifle Association endorses Representative Dan Flynn for re-election.

In a recent action alert, the NRA-PVF wrote, “There are few, if any, state lawmakers who have fought harder to expand your self-defense rights and options than Dan Flynn. Period. During the 2013 session, he sponsored and passed NRA-supported legislation reducing the number of required classroom training hours for an initial Concealed Handgun License (CHL) and allowing current licensees to complete the entire renewal process online.

The legislation is cosponsored by Senators Steve Daines (R-MT), Mike Enzi (R-WY), Joni Ernst (R-IA), Orrin Hatch (R-UT), Dean Heller (R-NV), Jim Inhofe (R-OK), Jerry Moran (R-KS), Pat Roberts (R-KS) and Dan Sullivan (R-AK).

A rural school district in Oklahoma put up signs this week alerting visitors that some staff members have access to guns, in what it says is an effort aimed at deterring school violence.

Schools in Okay, Okla., about 48 miles southeast of Tulsa put up signs that read, “Please be aware that certain staff members at Okay Public Schools can be legally armed and may use whatever force is necessary to protect our students,” the Tulsa World reports.

The signs follow up on a gun policy in the district’s schools – which serve 420 students – approved by the school board in August that says staff members may bring a gun to campus concealed on their person or kept in a locked box.

As the Legislature wrestles with the idea of allowing Floridians to openly carry handguns in public, the state Supreme Court is set to hear arguments over a claim that state law prohibiting such open display violates the U.S. Constitution.

The gun rights group Florida Carry is challenging a 2012 St. Lucie County Court decision that found Fort Pierce resident Dale Norman guilty of openly carrying a handgun as he walked down a street. Eric Friday, the group's lawyer, argued in briefs filed with the top court that the state's concealed weapon permit program violates the U.S. Constitution's Second Amendment because it's too restrictive.

This morning, the Nebraska Legislature essentially voted against your Second Amendment rights when they failed to advance LB289.

LB289 would have allowed law-abiding Nebraskans to simply transport their guns between different cities in Nebraska, without unknowingly violating those cities’ ordinances and risking their Constitutional right to bear arms. As a strong supporter of the Second Amendment, I stood behind Senator Ebke on LB289.

I heard from dozens of constituents on this issue. A large majority of our district supports this concept, and I was determined to represent their view with my ‘yes’ vote.

A would-be robber entered a Methuen, Mass., Stop Quick convenience store Wednesday, flashed a knife, and demanded money. Undaunted by the presence of a knife-wielding thief, the store owner took a few steps backward, and came forward at the robber swinging his golf putter.

The robber picked up the cash register and tried to get away. He ran to the door, but it had been locked at the push of a button by the fast-thinking clerk. The man used the register to break the glass at the bottom of the door. The clerk then came from behind the counter and began to beat the man with the putter. The robber dropped the register and tried to lunge through the hole he created by smashing through the glass.

Relatively new AR owners confused by the dizzying array of accessories should find comfort in the fact that they’re not alone. In fact, there were 2,545,802 NICS background checks in January, the third highest monthly total ever. The sales trend began last year, and a lot of those firearm adoptions are AR-15s and AR-10s.

One of the most attractive virtues of the AR is the fact is can be customized to every shooter’s stature, preferences and mission. Whether it’s a weaponlight to illuminate a dark hallway at night, bipod for long shots, rail skins with your favorite comic book hero logo or an adjustable buttstock that can keep your breakfast warm on a sub-zero hunt, it’s available.

As a retired British Army officer with 20 years of service and now living in Madison, I find it disappointing to listen to the debate (if it can be called that) on the right to bear arms.

It goes without saying that weapons kill and, if in possession, there is an increased possibility damage will be done. Weapons for hunting may be considered differently. One thing is for sure: A semi-automatic assault rifle is not the weapon for either self-defense or hunting and should be removed from the market. The days of Billy the Kid and the O.K. Corral are well passed.
