Milwaukee police are investigating two armed robberies that took place 30 minutes apart on Saturday, Jan. 27. Those robberies took place at Noodles and Company, 3121 N Oakland Ave., and Hollywood Video, 4231 N Oakland Ave. That same night, police records indicated 10 other armed robbery cases were reported in Police District Five, which includes the area surrounding the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Riverwest. Just five days before, on Jan. 22, a national coalition of mayors convened in Washington, D.C., to persuade Congress to take action and control the trafficking of illegal guns.

Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty for Mr. Bixby in the 2003 killings of Abbeville County sheriff's Sgt. Danny Wilson and state Constable Donnie Ouzts. Mr. Bixby's father, Arthur, also is charged with murder but is to be tried separately. "We told him to leave because it was private property. After we told him to leave, the deputy reached for and unsnapped his sidearm. The deputy had a real attitude and was not in any mood to talk," Mr. Bixby told State Law Enforcement Division agents.

Opposition among state officials is turning into an open revolt against a federal law calling for the creation of standardized driver's licenses nationwide that are meant to be less vulnerable to fraud. ...
Since then, legislatures in five states-- Georgia, Montana, New Mexico, Washington and Wyoming--have voted in committee or on the floor of one chamber to move similar legislation ahead. The bill adopted in a 99-to-1 vote by the Montana House of Representatives would go furthest, ordering state officials there to ignore the federal law.

Actor RYAN O'NEAL was forced to defend himself against his son after he became violent at a house party, the LOVE STORY star's manager insists. The troubled Hollywood star was booked on charges of assault with a deadly weapon and negligent discharge of a firearm after a fight with his son GRIFFIN on Saturday night (03FEB07). But Ryan's manager NEIL HASSMAN claims the actor was defending himself after his son began "wildly swinging a fireplace poker'.

A shotgun that an Edmundson woman kept for self-protection killed her younger child Sunday -- and police say that her older child pulled the trigger.

The dead child was identified as 3-year-old Benjamin Gollihur. Police say the shotgun blast caught him in the back at 12:25 p.m. in the family home, in the 4300 block of Heath Street.

Police say the victim's older brother, an 8-year-old boy, fired the weapon -- an 18 1/2-inch, pistol-grip, 12-gauge Mossberg shotgun.

We, the people of the "gun culture" (as referred to by Bill Clinton in the 1990s) are quick on the draw to protest media abrasion of our Second Amendment rights (i.e., write nasty letters). Therefore, I am pleased to commend writer Stephen Gurr on his evenhanded treatment of a controversial and polarizing subject, self-defense with firearms, in the Jan. 28 edition of The Times.

In these politically correct days, ideology will often trump facts. This is especially true on issues such as gun control, which has passionate supporters on both sides.

Earlier this week, The New York Times condemned Florida concealed carry laws as lethal and gruesome. In the Sunshine State, it is relatively easy if youre a law-abiding citizen to own handguns and to be legally entitled to carry a concealed weapon.

The problem with the NYT editorial is, although it expressed the displeasure of the Times, it contained no facts about the actual crime rates in Florida.

The NAACP recommendations call for police to conduct advance surveillance of homes where they plan to use no-knock warrants. They also suggest that judges reserve the warrants for extreme cases.

White, pastor of Mt. Ephraim Baptist Church near Johnstone's home, said she appears to have acted in self-defense, thinking her home was being robbed.

"We have got to understand the fear that people live in in these neighborhoods," he said. "Anybody in here, I think, would have fired if you've got anything to fire."

Someone shot and killed Jeff and Michelle Martin's 3-year-old horse, Top Cake, in another incident of cruelty to an animal in Jackson County.

There is no making any sense as to why someone would shoot the horse. Mr. Martin said the Tennessee Walker was found outside the fence on their property on Hans Road in the Helena community. He said the fact Top Cake was outside the Martin's property may be a reason for the shooting. If that's the case, there were much better ways to handle a loose horse.

The Justice Department is completing rules to allow the collection of DNA from most people arrested or detained by federal authorities, a vast expansion of DNA gathering that will include hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants, by far the largest group affected.

The new forensic DNA sampling was authorized by Congress in a little-noticed amendment to a January 2006 renewal of the Violence Against Women Act, which provides protections and assistance for victims of sexual crimes. The amendment permits DNA collecting from anyone under criminal arrest by federal authorities, and also from illegal immigrants detained by federal agents.

The NYPD released new information yesterday showing that police officers stopped 508,540 individuals on New York City streets last year--an average of 1,393 stops per day--often searching them for illegal weapons. The number was up from 97,296 in 2002, the last time the department divulged 12 months' worth of data.

The issue of these police-public encounters--called 'stop and frisks'-- became an emotional flashpoint after the shooting of of Amadou Diallo, whose death in a barrage of 41 police bullets led to weeks of protests and scores of arrests outside 1 Police Plaza, in Lower Manhattan.

The US District Court for the District of Columbia threw the suit out in 2004 but, in a groundbreaking decision last May, the Court of Appeals for the DC Circuit ruled that it should be reinstated. "Barring a terminally ill patient from the use of a potentially lifesaving treatment impinges on the right of self-preservation," commented one of the judges, Judith Rogers.

In Congress I have been committed to working to implement policies that protect and strengthen Second Amendment rights for law-abiding citizens. In 2005, we were able to secure a major victory for firearms owners, retailers and manufacturers by passing the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act, a bill I cosponsored.

I am not going to hide how much guns disgust me. I think they are one of the, if not THE, most vile contraptions on earth.

To give you an idea how much, I wrote three papers in college on guns and gun control in one semester. I cannot begin to tell you how many extremely heated discussions Ive had with friends and family about guns.

While I strive to understand how anyone can think that any one person should hold that much power - the ability to intimidate and/or take someones life with a gun. I cant deny an individuals constitutional right to bear arms, no matter how painful it may be for me to accept.

Five cops who heard an NYPD captain give a controversial order told the Daily News yesterday the message was crystal clear: Stop and frisk every black man at a robbery-plagued Brooklyn subway station.

"The captain said the descriptions of the [suspects] vary a lot, so we were to stop all black males at the station, stop and frisk them because 'they have no reason being there,'" said one white officer who was outraged by the command.

"All black men were to be stopped - no description other than that," the white officer said. "So some 30- to 40-year-old man who had every right to be at the station - he'd get frisked too."

For another, access to free speech, which is often invoked when dicussing [sic] campaign reforms, is inadequate to cover all campaign finance rules. But there is a difference between the right to free speech and a mandate to equal speech. (Just as the Second Amendment grants the right to bear arms, not a mandate to outfit everyone with as many guns as he or she wants.)

Working in a convenience store can be one of the most dangerous jobs in America, and many in this industry have taken it upon themselves to take steps to protect themselves.

In the past week alone, two Columbus area convenience stores have experienced, and prevented, violent armed robbery attempts. The first took place on January 30th at the Amira Market on Whittier Street; when, at approximately 8pm, two men entered the store and shot at the owner. He fired back in self-defense, and the two men fled. Columbus Police later received reports of a car-jacking in the area.

PHOENIX State lawmakers are working to overturn one man's murder conviction and make it easier for a Tucson man facing similar charges to escape prosecution all in the name of self-defense.

The Senate Judiciary Committee is to consider legislation today to retroactively add language to a change in a self-defense law approved last year. The new wording would say last year's law applies to any case that had not yet gone to the jury.

An apparent burglary attempt ends in a fatal shooting in East Tulsa, police said. Officers were called to the 1100 block of South 146th East Avenue around 3 p.m. Sunday. When they arrived they found a 39-year-old white man dead in the front yard. The homeowners told police the man had started banging, then kicking on their door. The husband said he went to get his gun and when the door started to give way, he pulled the trigger. The couple told police they did not know the suspect.

Jersey City was in need of police officers in December 2005, and the news had filtered down to an officer in Middletown Township, N.J., who was looking for a fresh start.

The officer, Kevin Freibott, approached his chief in Middletown with a transfer form, a gesture that was met with little surprise. Officer Freibott was fired from the department there in 2001 after a car accident outside a bar and grill in Atlantic Highlands in which he was driving with an expired license. Although he was reinstated after petitioning the state, he received a six-month suspension.
