A man is under going emergency surgery in Perth to try to save a hand which was almost severed during a fight in the city.

Surgeons at Royal Perth Hospital have been operating on the man for almost three hours.

Police say the man was hit with a meat cleaver during a fight in Aberdeen Street in the early hours of this morning.

In a separate incident, police are questioning a man and a juvenile they say hijacked a car at gunpoint in the Perth suburb of Scarborough.

It is alleged the 24-year-old man and the 16-year-old boy used a replica pistol to steal the car from a couple, before taking it on a joy-ride around the city.

They were apprehended after crashing the car in Maddington.
