A former Newark police officer has been arrested on charges of harassing and stalking women he previously dated, impersonating a police officer and other offenses, Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray announced today.

When authorities executed a search warrant on Thursday at Eddie Gonzalez's city home, detectives found two guns, hollow point bullets and a closet full of Newark Police uniforms that he allegedly used to impersonate a police officer, according to a news release from the prosecutor's office.

Gonzalez, 37, is being held at the Essex County Correctional Facility in lieu of $100,000 bail.

In their continuing battle with Sheriff Edward Rochford, the Morris County freeholders have rejected a 25 percent pay increase over three years that they say Rochford negotiated independently for his officers at the county courthouse in Morristown.
The three-year contract for PBA unit 151 includes raises averaging 8.4 percent annually, according to data released by the freeholder board.
At their work session on Wednesday, the board agreed unanimously that salary increases for the sheriff's office, and other departments, must remain within the state's "hard" 2 percent cap. They instructed their labor attorney, Matthew Giacobbe, to write up an official response to the sheriff reminding him of that.

A tentative settlement has been reached in a federal lawsuit filed against Newark officials by a city resident who claimed police officers forced their way into his home without a search warrant and wrongfully arrested him, according to the man's attorney.

Under the proposed agreement, the city would pay separate amounts to the resident, Hansel Sosa, and to a child who was allegedly held against his will at the time of the August 2012 arrest, their attorney, David Kreizer, said in a recent interview.

Kreizer declined to specify the amounts of those payments, but said his clients "are happy with the result and that Newark has taken responsibility for its officers' actions."

Calling it part of the right of self defense, the state House voted Thursday to let those with permits to carry concealed weapons bring them in to public buildings.

The 33-25 vote came over objections of foes, all but one of them Democrats, said HB 2320 permits government agencies to keep their buildings gun-free solely by buying metal detectors and having security guards at each public entrance. Rep. Jennifer Benally, D-Tuba City, said the County Supervisors Association told her the cost just to those governments would be $59 million a year in what she called "unfunded mandates.'

Evan Hughes, vice president of the Vermont Federation of Sportsmen’s Clubs — a local NRA affiliate — said there are aspects of the bill that he finds concerning, but emphasized that this legislation is still “evolving” and his group will continue to be involved in that process. Hughes said he finds the mental health reporting requirement particularly troubling.

“The Federation’s position has always been that somebody who is mentally ill, once they are no longer mentally ill, they should no longer be a prohibited person,” he said.

However, too much attention has been paid to gun legislation. There are 27 bills that do everything from creating lifetime handgun permits to allowing people with permits to carry guns into parks and areas that schools use.

The Second Amendment is alive and well in the Volunteer State. Haslam, to his credit, opposes 11 of those bills, mostly on public safety grounds.

The General Assembly should not enact preemptive laws handcuffing local officials’ ability to regulate guns in their communities.

Opponents and supporters are speaking out about a bill that would allow concealed weapons on campus.

A state lawmaker is a step closer to passing a bill that would allow firearms to be carried on university campuses. Senate Bill 143 sponsor State Sen. Cary Smith (R-Billings) says it would increase campus safety by allowing students and staff to carry concealed firearms. He says the university system is infringing on residents' constitutional right to bear arms.

The anti-gun Everytown for Gun Safety has scheduled a seminar in Seattle next Friday afternoon on “gun violence prevention policies” on the heels of a report in Friday’s Seattle Times detailing how gun control lobbyists could not advance their agenda in Olympia this session.

Everytown’s event will “include legislators, researchers, and local mental health counselors.” Noticeably absent from participation is anyone representing a Second Amendment organization, even though two of the nation’s most active are headquartered within a half-hour’s drive. Both the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms, and the Second Amendment Foundation are located in Bellevue, a short drive across one of the Lake Washington floating bridges.

A bill that would expand legal protections for justifiable homicides involving occupied vehicles, as well as making it illegal for anyone convicted of domestic violence, even a misdemeanor offense, to own a gun, won unanimous approval from a Senate committee on Friday.

...

It also deleted a provision implementing universal reciprocity for states that issue concealed weapons permits and would allow reciprocity only in states that require training to obtain a permit. The Department of Public Safety will develop the list each year as it does now.

Members of the Judiciary Committee advanced the bill on Thursday to the full House. The proposal by Republican Rep. Dwight Tosh of Jonesboro was initially cast as a "stand-your-ground" bill but was heavily amended to solely focus on civil lawsuits.

Heizer Defense is making the PAK1 “Pocket AK Pistol” official, and it’s a single-shot derringer chambered for 7.62x39mm, the original AK-47 cartridge. These little guns may have started out as a last-ditch option in concept, but where they really shine is at the range, where fun is measured in fireballs.

The Pocket AK will get its full debut at the upcoming NRA Annual Meeting in Nashville April 10 through 12. This expands the Heizer family to four cartridges following the launch of the Pocket AR in .223 Remington and the first Heizer derringer, the .410-bore/.45 Colt Pocket Shotgun.

They signed on to the Campaign to Unload, a gun control advocacy group that encourages people to divest their retirement plans with the intention of hurting the gun industry financially.

The goal is to prevent gun violence by dealing a blow to the National Rifle Association, which advocates civilian gun ownership for self defense and as a solution to fight gun violence and crime.

A bill that would add “self defense” as a reason to wear, carry or transport a gun in Maryland was among firearm-related measures heard Thursday by the Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee.

The measure is sponsored by Sen. Wayne Norman, R-Cecil/Harford, who said at a news conference before the hearing, that his bill was necessary “because the state police have limited criteria when they can issue a permit …. Anybody who feels they are in danger … the state police will be able to look at allegations … and then the state police can rule or determine based on their investigation.”

“I knew the cops would get there quickly, but maybe not get there quickly enough, and I wanted to be able to defend us.”

The wife of a James City County police officer had just put her two-year-old daughter to bed and was settling down to watch television when a man began banging on her doors and windows, trying to get in. Trained by her husband in self-defense, she dialed 911, grabbed her handgun, and took a defensive position.

Lawmakers in West Virginia are delivering to Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin legislation that will expand access to National Firearms Act-controlled items and grant concealed carry without a permit.

The two measures have tracked through the state legislature by wide margins with the shall-sign measure unanimously approved in both chambers while the proposal to allow permitless concealed carry passed Thursday 79-21 in the state House after the Senate polled 32-2 for it last week.

“We’re here to protect our people from big government,” said Delegate Michael Ihle, R-Jackson, of the carry bill before yesterday’s vote. “This is a step in the right direction. It’s not perfect, but it gets us much closer on the 2nd Amendment to doing what’s right.”

Michael Keyes wants to buy a gun.

And the Pennsylvania state trooper knows how to use one: he carries several on duty, rotating between his Sig Sauer 227 handgun, a fully-automatic AR-15 and a Remington 870 shotgun. But while a very armed Keyes is trusted to serve and protect Pennsylvania, as soon as he clocks out, he is banned by state law from owning a gun for personal use.

As Neeson is busily promoting his latest movie, Run All Night – the poster from which depicts the actor holding a gun – at least some social commentators refuse to let him off the hook for his previous remarks.

The Hollywood Reporter explained a crew of street artists in California began hanging parodies of the movie poster with a new name, Gun All Right, and the pointed tagline: “One hypocrite laughing all the way to the bank.”

Psychologists and social scientists have long understood that people are inclined to stick to a belief even when they are presented with clear evidence that their belief is incorrect.

In short, people are obstinate.

Recent research has shown that this is not just a psychological issue, but also has a physiological basis. Our brains are actually wired for this behavior, and it accounts for a great deal of the strife and conflict we see in politics, religion, and our regular daily lives.

The traditionally anti-gun Washington Post yesterday once again called out President Barack Obama on his nasty habit of misrepresenting reality when it comes to firearms, giving his recent “odd series of exaggerated gun claims” a whopping three “Pinocchio’s,” which translates to suggesting the president has been caught telling fibs.

This came two days after Bizpac Review headlined a piece with, “Anyone checking Obama’s 2nd Amendment Facts? He’s making it up as he goes.” That’s a polite way of saying the president is dishing out fabrications rather than facts.

“What’s a life worth?” When I first logged on to the Alternative Ballistics website, that’s what I saw. I figured it either meant the less lethal tool the company is trying to sell is REALLY expensive, or it’s completely anti-lethal. Or both. Or maybe neither. Either way, it peaked my interest and I wanted to take a closer look.

Alternative Ballistic is a polymer, “less lethal”, bright orange doohickey that slips over the slide of a pistol. Aim, squeeze, BANG! The bullet stops inside a ping pong-sized ball at the end of the muzzle and sends said ball sailing through the air.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
No kingdom can be secured otherwise than by arming the people. The possession of arms is the distinction between a freeman and a slave. He, who has nothing, and who himself belongs to another, must be defended by him, whose property he is, and needs no arms. But he, who thinks he is his own master, and has what he can call his own, ought to have arms to defend himself, and what he possesses; else he lives precariously, and at discretion. — James Burgh, Political Disquisitions: Or, an Enquiry into Public Errors, Defects, and Abuses [London, 1774-1775].
