AK: I’m a gun owner and willing to talk about gun violence in schools. I don’t think we have a ‘gun problem.’

The ADN's Steve Meyer has written several opinion pieces on firearm ownership and firearm control that I have found interesting, including his latest piece published on Feb. 2. Although I disagree with some of his conclusions, the piece was thought provoking and he offered up a challenge for discourse.

Mr. Meyer challenged us to discuss the ownership and use of firearms in our country. He uses the term "gun problem," which I disagree with. He writes that concerns over the violation of civil liberties, and the right to own and bear firearms are mantras of the extreme, as are opinions that current firearm laws are sufficient.

Some big retailers have curbed sales of assault weapons after last month's school shooting in Florida. But others are sticking to their guns.

Several outdoor chains, including Bass Pro Shops, Cabela's, Gander Outdoors and Academy Sports, continue to sell assault-style rifles online and in stores as part of their mix of hunting equipment. The decision is in stark contrast to Dick's Sporting Goods, which recently banned sales of assault rifles, and Walmart, which stopped carrying assault rifles in 2015 but says it will no longer sell guns or ammunition to anyone under 21.

It wasn’t Parkland, Fla., that taught Jonathan Weinberg about the terror of guns in schools. It was Burlington, Vt. A decade ago, as an elementary school student at the Orchard School in South Burlington, Weinberg and fellow students faced a lockdown. An armed person had walked onto campus, Weinberg recalled. The students hunkered down in silence. The person was apprehended without any harm, but Weinberg carried the memories for years.

The City Council unanimously passed a resolution Monday night on promoting awareness to prevent acts of community violence, but not before council members and citizens added fuel to the ongoing debate over gun safety. Councilwoman Deb Porter, D-at large, voted for the resolution, but she stressed much more could have been done and more remains to happen — locally and downstate.

In the aftermath of the Feb. 14 Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in Parkland, survivors and advocates are urging politicians to act on legislation that could prevent other shootings like it. The Village Council of Royal Palm Beach is considering a resolution to implement gun reform, but the state legislature prohibits individual municipalities from passing their own gun control measures.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo is blasting New York’s delegation of congressional Republicans for their support of gun rights. A campaign that went live on Monday with the governor's blessing is targeting seven GOP House members with "A" ratings from the NRA. The lawmakers are “obstructing common-sense protections on the federal level," according to the state Democratic Party, which is bankrolling the six-figure effort.

Unless you follow this stuff closely, you probably hadn’t heard this. And why would you have? Although it was breathlessly reported in some of the year-end roundups, the rule actually went into effect in September. And, as a result … nothing happened. Nothing at all. This pattern—of a freak out, followed by silence—is a boringly familiar one, the product in part of a widespread misunderstanding as to how common and innocuous open carry laws are.

The Illinois Senate will consider a bill Wednesday that would require 18-20-year-olds to relinquish certain semiautomatic rifles. The bill, HB 1465, originated in the Illinois House, where it was sponsored by Rep. Michelle Mussman (D-Schaumburg).
Breitbart News reported that the House passed the measure by a vote of 64-51. It gives 18-20-year-olds 90 days to hand over or transfer ownership of heretofore legally possessed “assault weapons” and demands the same age group immediately forfeit ownership of “high capacity” magazines.

Adults are supposed to take care of children — not only keep them safe, but make them feel safe. Schools are essentially an extension of the home, in that sense, providing sanctuaries of learning, of nurturing and care. But after years of attacks by people with weapons of war, students cannot feel safe and are demanding that adults end years of complaisance and act. They are not asking for their schools to become armed garrisons.

Colorado Rep. Mike Coffman (R) is used to tough campaigns. His suburban district east of Denver voted for President Barack Obama in 2012 and Hillary Clinton in 2016. Dick’s Sporting Goods Inc. has vowed to limits sales of guns. Its problem, however, is poor sales of everything else. Only weeks after winning accolades from gun-control advocates for ending sales of assault rifles at its Field & Stream stores, Dick’s posted a deeper-than-expected sales decline. Its stock sank the most in four months Tuesday in the wake of the quarterly report, which reflected struggles with excess inventory and deep discounting.

A county sheriff is apologizing for accidentally leaving his gun in a mid-Michigan school gym locker room.

Isabella County Sheriff Michael Main said in a statement Tuesday that he takes full responsibility and is "devastated" by his negligence. He says he was at a weekend event at Shepherd Middle School and used the locker room to change from street clothes into uniform.

Main says he believed the gun — his backup weapon — was in his bag when he left.

The Morning Sun of Mount Pleasant reports that Shepherd Public Schools Superintendent Claire Bunker told parents that the weapon was found before classes started Monday, prompting speculation about who left the weapon.

A new report from the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank based in Washington, D.C., has published a three-page report that counters much of the anti-gun rhetoric about mass shootings and so-called “assault weapons” in the wake of the Parkland, Florida high school tragedy.

Headlined “The Current Gun Debate: Mass Shootings,” the report was released Monday, coincidentally timed two days before Seattle’s KIRO, the local CBS affiliate, hosts a one-hour live discussion titled “An Urgent Conversation About Guns.” That program will air live Wednesday evening, 7-8 p.m. for viewers in western Washington. The event will be held on the campus of Seattle University.

Less than one month after a school shooting in Florida, anti-gun New York Mayor Bill de Blasio has removed police officers from public schools in the Big Apple, leaving the safety of children to unarmed “school safety agents.” The New York Post quoted teacher Arthur Goldstein, who stated, “My colleagues think it’s outrageous — and really stupid.” Goldstein also revealed that his colleagues would rather trust their safety to armed police rather than take on that responsibility personally.

Second story- You hear your dogs bark. A second later you hear glass breaking at the back of your home.
Third story- You and your wife are asleep in your bed. You wake up when your wife nudges you. You thought it was your son talking to you, but you look up to see a stranger standing at the foot of your bed.

What would you do in these situations? Text and podcast available at the link. (15 minute audio)

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
War is an ugly thing but not the ugliest of things; the decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feelings which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. A man who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself. — John Stuart Mills
