Apparently, the departure of Dan Rather did nothing to improve the quality of reporting or objectivity at CBS. Behold the latest anti-freedom ignorance...

"Fifteen years ago, Osama bin Laden sent one of his operatives to the United States to buy and bring back two-dozen .50-caliber rifles, a gun that can kill someone from over a mile away and even bring down an airplane."

"In spite of all the recent efforts to curb terrorism, bin Laden could do the same thing today, because buying and shipping the world’s most powerful sniper rifle is not as difficult as you might think."

From GUNS Magazine, April 2005 issue:

"Direct contact should be avoided whenever possible ... If unavoidable, the victim should adopt a state of active passivity ... be careful what you say or do and give up valuables without a struggle. This allows the victim to take charge of the situation ... By doing nothing there is no chance of inadvertently initiating violence by saying something such as 'Please don't hurt me.'"

"There are several recent national and world reports --exposing the dangers of misbegotten gun legislation that has backfired -- causing crime rates to skyrocket and costing taxpayers millions of dollars. It's proof that most gun laws infringe only upon the law-abiding citizen and further threaten continued lawful gun ownership by all sportsmen."

"About 50 Oakland community activists Saturday honored Patrick McCullough, a man whose crusade against drug dealers on 59th Street has become a controversial symbol for broader citizen efforts to rid the city of its dangerous reputation." ...

"The 49-year-old made headlines last month after he shot and wounded a 16- year-old neighbor who was allegedly part of a group attacking McCullough in his front yard in a North Oakland block plagued by drug dealing."

"Last week prosecutors determined that McCullough, whom police had arrested on suspicion of felony assault after he wounded Melvin McHenry, appeared to have acted in self-defense. They also decided not to try to file charges against Melvin, whose family and attorney insist that McCullough provoked the incident."

"During a press conference at Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel Conley's office, officials said the weapons - a .50-caliber sniper rifle and the Five-seveN Herstal made in Belgium - are widely available on the Internet, but are suitable for military purposes only and represent a grave threat to public safety when in the hands of criminals."

"A 12-year-old boy in our community recently brought a loaded gun to school, an incident that has become all too common throughout this nation."

"Here in South Bend, fearful parents called for metal detectors. Harried school officials blamed parents for their lack of supervision. Both responses missed the point."

"The boy reported feeling unsafe at school, a circumstance that is unacceptable. As members of a community, we all have the responsibility to ensure a safe environment in schools, which, after all, are institutions children attend."

"Whenever a senseless, savage, high-profile crime is committed with a handgun, I patiently wait for someone to blame the gun. I didn't have to wait long after the murders in Brookfield."

"Steven R. Schmitz wrote in a March 16 letter that we need to 'control' the access to handguns ('Better controls needed over access to handguns'). How would this have stopped a cowardly murderer from shooting a group of innocent people? Terry Ratzmann bought the gun in June 2004. He had no prior criminal record and passed a background check. No one could have predicted his murderous rampage nine months later."

"Regarding Wednesday's article titled "Barrios for ban on 'killer' weapons" ...: Why would you print a story like this? The facts are all wrong. A FN 5.7 pistol is not an assault rifle no matter which state you live in. It's a pistol that shoots an expensive and usually hard to find round. And when the story talked about .50 rifles, it said that it can be shot at scary things like airplanes and trains. Every gun can be fired at those things. Are you going to use that to ban every gun from the most powerful civilian round all the way down? After a while you will be saying that a .22 LR can hit a plane. It's so stupid. You know nothing about guns and shouldn't speak about guns until you have a clear view of what's going on."

DRIVING in to Austin, Texas, in late 2000 I asked the taxi driver – a jaunty man originally from New York – which parts of town to avoid after dark. Don't worry, he advised, Austin is a safe place. After all, "everyone carries a gun in Texas".

"Seattle denizen John DePalma was a little from Missouri on this business of a muzzle-loading shotgun for a South Dakota Merriam’s. He is, however, a confirmed traditionalist—kind of comes with the territory when you represent the C.C. Filson Company, famous for its rough-and-ready outdoor clothing made from natural materials. So when the idea was suggested for a turkey hunt in the state of the never-ending wind, it just seemed natural to pair the man from the world of wool, cotton and canvas with a shotgun from the 19th century."

"Cimino said in a free society people have power that they sometimes shouldn't." ...

He feels safer carrying a weapon and said everyone should be taught to be aware of their surroundings and responsible for themselves, something he learned serving in the Navy. "The recent spike in homicides and the continued slaughter of innocents such as Wander DeJesus have led city officials to wonder whether there is a better way to prevent some of these shootings. One way is to make it harder for gun traffickers to get guns."

"One considered particularly effective is a law to limit handgun purchases to one a month. This prevents straw buyers from going into gun stores, stocking up on 30 or 40 guns at a pop, then selling them on the street."

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
The right of a citizen to bear arms, in lawful defense of himself or the State, is absolute. He does not derive it from the State government. It is one of the high powers" delegated directly to the citizen, and `is excepted out of the general powers of government.' A law cannot be passed to infringe upon or impair it, because it is above the law, and independent of the lawmaking power." [Cockrum v. State, 24 Tex. 394, at 401-402 (1859)]
