No charges will be filed in the fatal shooting death of a man last month in Wabaunsee County.

County Attorney Tim Liesmann announced Thursday that the shooting of 36-year-old Chad Thomas-Buckbee in Alma was a justified self-defense shooting.

Liesmann said the shooting occurred after Thomas-Buckbee began acting aggressively toward a family member, who tried to lock him out of the house.

My question, then, is why can England, 329 years after the Declaration of Right, find in itself the strength and courage to change its gun laws so that it is virtually impossible for a civilian to own an AR-15 or even a handgun, but here in the United States, 230 years after the final ratification of our Constitution, we cannot? I believe this is because we are interpreting the Constitution incorrectly and pretending that its text cannot be changed.

Ed.: You can't argue to ban AR-15s while also saying the 2A protects the duty and right to have keep private arms suitable for military use.

While the public safety benefits of banning gun purchases by 18-to-20-year-olds are doubtful, the burdens on millions of law-abiding adults are clear. At 18, the NRA notes in a lawsuit challenging Florida’s new law, Americans “are considered adults for almost all purposes,” and it seems anomalous to deny them the constitutional right of armed self-defense, which is also a fundamental human right.

The noise startled Alexis Bukrym. It was a crashing sound, near the front of her apartment, and a few seconds later, another noise twisted her stomach and rattled her nerves: the sound of her bedroom doorknob jiggling, then turning, and the door swinging open with a creak.

There’d been a series of car break-ins at the Ocala, Florida, apartment complex, and Bukrym and her neighbors worried that burglaries would come next. “Everybody in our community was on edge,” she said. “There’s a lot of bad people in the whole world, and a lot of people think, ‘It’ll never be me.’ But I’m cautious.”

As Denver, Colorado Springs, Grand Junction and other Colorado cities prepare for Saturday’s national student-led March for Our Lives protests against gun violence, a new poll from the Associated Press finds 7 in 10 adults favor stricter gun control measures.

The poll also found that a majority of gun owners and half of Republicans favor new laws to address gun violence. More than 8 in 10 Americans favor a federal law preventing mentally ill people from purchasing guns. But almost half of Americans expect no action from elected officials on the matter.

A Wichita woman who shot and killed her boyfriend on a Kellogg on-ramp last year is immune from prosecution, a Sedgwick County judge ruled this week.

Crystal Rotramel, 32, was charged with second-degree murder in the Feb. 5, 2017, shooting death of 40-year-old Richard "Jimmie" Hamm Jr., the live-in boyfriend she'd been dating for about six months. Rotramel told detectives Hamm physically abused her and was threatening her life up to the moment she shot him once in the head, according to an affidavit released last year.

It’s feel-good legislation designed to placate a frightened populous that is encouraged by some politicians and social media into believing that there is a nefarious army of “bad hombres” who will use any opportunity to slit your throat and steal your purse. That is not true, especially here in New Hampshire. A person here is more likely to be assaulted, injured or murdered in a domestic dispute with someone they know than with a stranger burglarizing their home.

When a 39-year-old met a man in a St. Paul parking lot to buy an iPhone Thursday, it quickly turned into a robbery. The man put a gun to his side and snatched $500 from him, police said Friday.

But the man being robbed was a permit-to-carry holder, and he pulled out his own gun and shot at the suspect about 5:30 p.m., said Sgt. Mike Ernster, a St. Paul police spokesman. He later told police he feared for his life and fired in self-defense, according to a criminal complaint filed Friday against the alleged robber.

Some of us may have a hard time feeling warm and welcome surrounded on three sides by firearms. But Jamie Arnold, owner of BoltWorks Tactical Firearms in Dryden, is as welcoming as they come.

With a disarming smile and firm handshake, Arnold has a charm and articulate succinctness that makes it no secret why he’s become an authority on firearms among local media. Self-made as a businessman, Arnold has become Tompkins County’s equivalent of a munitions guru.

On Thursday 21 News had an exclusive report on a Warren woman who has a conceal carry permit and displayed her gun to try and diffuse a tense situation.

CCW permit holders are to use a gun as a means of a last resort of self defense, so did the Warren woman act legally when she told the man she had a gun to stop an alleged assault? At least one attorney we talked to says Yes.

After a proposal to allow teachers in certain cases to carry guns in schools failed, a school safety bill sailed through the state House of Representatives.

The bill, which would let schools draw from the Advancement and Technology Fund to pay for school security upgrades, passed 96-4. According to AL.com, about $41 million will be available for schools, based on their enrollment.

Rep. Bill Poole (R-Tuscaloosa) said school systems could buy security cameras, make entrances more secure and other security-related measures.

“Any tool we can add to the toolboxes that schools have to keep the premises safe is critical,” he said.

Let's take the most dangerous weapons - automatic weapons and bump stocks - out of civilian hands, and create guidelines that make the process more stringent to obtain guns. Why don't we at least TRY these limiting measures to SEE if there is some measurable impact. YES, this may not be the complete solution, but we can start here and in the other areas I outline below.

I know people want their guns as a means of self-defense. Are there a lot of stories out there of people using their guns to save their lives? I'm not seeing those at all. I'm only seeing how guns falling too quickly into the wrong hands is contributing to the deaths of a lot of innocents.

Ed.: Willful ignorance isn't an argument.

Two recently released polls indicate that a majority of America’s teachers are out of touch with the majority of Americans when it comes to the issue of gun control. According to a Gallup poll, a whopping 73% of teachers are opposed to the idea of arming teachers, one of several solutions floated to help better defend schools. Meanwhile, an NBC/Wall Street Journal poll found that 58% of Americans believe that gun ownership increases safety. This represents a significant change from 19 years ago, when 52% of Americans believed the opposite. The disconnect is interesting.
