When Nicki Stallard was transitioning from male to female, she didn’t buy the safety advice that many within the LGBT community were giving to people like her. “The premise was you should carry a whistle, blow it if you got attacked, and someone would come and help you or call the police,” said the 57-year-old who recently moved from San Jose to Fresno. “But the sad reality is a lot of people ignore the whistles and don’t want to get involved.”

A Detroit Police Department officer who is suspended with pay as he faces domestic violence charges has been prohibited from carrying a gun or having contact with the woman, according to a personal protection order granted by Wayne County Circuit Court, records show.

The protection order granted means that officer Kwame Powell cannot carry a firearm even as a law enforcement officer, said Michael Woody, director of media relations for the Detroit Police Department.

“If you have an active PPO against you, which prohibits you from carrying a firearm, as a police officer (Powell) wouldn’t be able to perform his duties,” Woody said. “As long as that PPO is in effect, he wouldn’t be able to work here.”

A woman’s hand is around a gun with the words “Go ahead, make her day.”

Should we allow guns on campus?

My initial reaction to the question is the same as yours. Are students responsible enough to defend themselves? Why would we want a gun on campus? On second thought, we call a guy with a gun every time there is a problem, on campus or off. That highlights the real issue here. The real problem is with our inaccurate imagination. We have an idealized view of campus life and a stereotypical view of students. Look closer.

We don't have to guess about campus carry. We know. We have thousands of man-years of experience. Ten states already allow concealed carry on campus. Their experience is more powerful than papers full of academic speculation.

Ansley H. Fox was a somewhat troubled man, gifted in mechanics and the ability to design, promote and invent products, but apparently lousy in business acumen. Born in 1870, Fox began manufacturing his first shotguns in 1896 under the name Fox Gun Co., of Baltimore, Md. This effort petered out pretty quickly. Production was very low, and surviving examples of this shotgun are few and far between. Around 1900 he took employment at the Baltimore Gun Co., but this lasted a bit less than three years. Fox then founded the Philadelphia Gun Co. in 1904, where he continued to refine his shotgun design.

A new retail shop has opened along MacArthur Boulevard. It is not a car or motorcycle dealership. It is not a music or tool store. It does not sell clothing, furniture or hardware—at least not in the traditional sense. It sells gun. And it is the only gun retail store in town. Bourne Bridge Guns & Ammo has opened earlier this year, next door to the Cape Cod Muscle & Speed towing company. The business is, in fact, owned by the same couple who owns the towing company, Christine Riley and Jeffrey Dexter.

Butte-Silver Bow is seeking its own zoning permit that officials say is needed if plans to formalize a shooting range behind the Big Butte hill are pursued. Much of the area is zoned as “open space-conservation,” so putting in fencing and benches to make it an official shooting range means a special use permit is needed, said acting planning director Lori Casey. The zoning board will meet at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, April 20, in the courthouse to consider a permit, and there could be opponents.

Nebraska lawmakers signaled Wednesday they intend to pull rank on local elected officials when it comes to regulating guns. The Legislature voted 32-12 to advance a bill that would require state law to override municipal gun regulations in Nebraska. Supporters of the measure narrowly defeated a filibuster by senators who argued cities and villages ought to control gun possession in their communities. The advancement of the bill puts Nebraska one step closer to passing what likely is the most significant expansion of gun rights since lawmakers enacted a concealed carry law in 2006.

Concerned about firearms on school premises in the wake of a shooting in California, School Board members discussed ways of preventing guns from being carried into Hampton schools Tuesday.

The board had previously prepared to talk about preventing firearms from being carried into events like voting and school plays, which take place on school grounds and are open to the general public. It was by coincidence that their discussion came one day after a man shot and killed his wife and an 8-year-old student at a school in San Bernardino, Calif. The man, 53-year-old Cedric Anderson, also wounded a 9-year-old student, then fatally shot himself.
