Responsible gun owners defended themselves, but you didn't hear it in the news. Instructor Jeff Street joins host Rob Morse to talk about three new examples.

First story- You’re a small 23 year old woman. You’re walking from shop to shop when a man grabs your purse and tries to run away. He hits you.
Second story- Someone rings your doorbell and wakes you up. You watch the stranger walk away. He walks towards the trees, but doesn’t leave. Then you hear the crash of breaking glass coming from the front of your house.

Third story- You drive up to your home and notice a window is broken. You shout that you’re home, and a man shouts back.

What would you do in these situations? Text and podcast available at the link. (17 minutes)

The Gates woman charged in the stabbing death of her partner in September 2017 has been found not guilty by a jury.

Doris Carrasquillo was charged with manslaughter for the death of 28-year-old Kashmire Nazier Redd. Police said Carrasquillo stabbed Redd inside a home off Lyell Avenue.

But, her attorneys argued the stabbing was in self-defense.

“The jury found that Ms. Carrasquillo acted in self-defense and therefore her actions were justified under our law,” said Jessica Naclerio of Foti Law Firm. “The loss of a life is always a tragedy, but we are happy that the truth about what happened on September 4th was finally made public.”

And, yet, the GOP-dominated House and Senate have ignored those voices in favor of a far smaller group: extreme gun activists who go well beyond where the majority of responsible Minnesota gun owners and hunters are. Republican leaders have shut down debate, tabled bills, ruled amendments out of order, mocked students who tried to put their civics lessons to use — all in an attempt to forestall the will of the people who elected them.

On April 24, 1607, 143 men from England disembarked from three ships onto what we now call Jamestown, Va., establishing the first permanent English colony in North America. In the intervening 411 years that modest colony has grown into the most prosperous nation on Earth, and our survival and economic prosperity are due in no small fact to the use and development of firearms. The catalyst to this success has been the evolution of the hunting rifle over the past four centuries.

Ten months after an altercation left a 36-year-old Oak Island man dead, authorities have closed the case and announced Friday that no criminal charges would be filed in the shooting death of Michael Christopher Auvil.

Thomas Everette “(Tommy”) Craddock, property manager at the Driftwood Motel in Oak Island, shot and killed Auvil on the lawn of the motel at 11:15 p.m. on July 22, 2017, police said. Investigators said Auvil attacked Craddock with a fish-cleaning knife after earlier being involved in an altercation with another motel employee.

Tuesday night, Christian County board members voted to adopt a gun sanctuary resolution.

Five counties including Effingham, Jefferson, Saline, Perry and Iroquois have already adopted gun sanctuary resolutions. Christian County is now the sixth in the state.

Republican candidate for the Illinois Senate, Seth McMillan says he wants the whole state to abide by the same gun laws — as long as the second amendment is not being taken away.

At times it seems like the different levels of government are at war with each other: states sue the federal government to enforce certain laws (or not to); the federal government sues states (like California) over its approach to immigration "sanctuaries."

And several Oregon counties have now joined efforts to block the state from enforcing gun control laws.

“One need only look to the harassment suffered by some of the Parkland shooting survivors to appreciate the vitriol that has infected public discourse about the Second Amendment,” the judge wrote. “And this court has no doubt that the harassment goes both ways.”

Walker suggested the law should perhaps be changed to let people join litigation under pseudonyms, given the “barrage of hate” that can now easily be spread on social media and the 24-hour news cycle when someone is publicly associated with a controversial lawsuit. But for now the judge said his hands are tied because the case doesn’t involve matters of “utmost intimacy.”

The judge ordered the NRA to file an amended complaint without pseudonyms by May 21.

A candidate for Alabama’s Second Congressional District is giving away an AR-15, which he says is a way to draw importance to the Second Amendment.

Rich Hobson’s campaign announced Tuesday that it will hold a drawing to give away the AR-15, made by Smith & Wesson. According to the release, entries can be made until noon on Memorial Day when the winner will be chosen at random.

Hobson says he believes it is fitting to hold the drawing on Memorial Day.

Investigators have concluded that a man who stabbed Best acted in self-defense after Best confronted him and several other people as they sat in their car.

OH: The story behind the viral photo of a Kent State graduate posing with her cap — and a rifle

If Kaitlin Bennett had been allowed to carry a gun at Kent State University as a student, she wouldn’t have carried an AR-10 rifle. She would have carried her handgun instead.

But the 22-year-old said she chose to pose with the rifle for her graduation photos Sunday because it made for a stronger symbol: That, as a non-student, she could at last arm herself on the northeast Ohio campus. To Bennett, the photo was the culmination of her years as a conservative student activist, during which she advocated for students to be able to carry concealed weapons on the same campus where, almost 50 years ago, the Ohio National Guard opened fire into a crowd of unarmed students protesting the Vietnam War, killing four and wounding nine.

Louisiana's Senate declined Wednesday to allow visitors with concealed carry permits to pack their guns on Louisiana school campuses.

The Senate Judiciary B Committee gutted House Bill 602 by Rep. Blake Miguez, R-Erath, late Tuesday that would have allowed the practice.

Instead, senators amended the bill to allow civilians with concealed carry permits only to approach the edge of campuses before disarming and approved it by a narrow 3-2 margin.

No one was hurt and Buscoe, 46, was arrested and his two guns taken. That was a relief to Price, who described himself in a phone interview as a supporter of the Second Amendment and said he and his wife both armed themselves as they waited with their children for police to arrive that night.

“I am kind of glad that they do have this law because of this situation here,” Price, 34, said. “If he is found mentally ill, he shouldn’t have a gun. On the other hand if he can prove he’s not mentally ill, so be it.”

Mention “infringement” in the same breath as amendment, and the NRA is usually talking about the Second Amendment. But in a recent lawsuit filed against New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Department of Financial Services (DFS), the NRA is alleging First Amendment infringement.

The NRA late last week filed the lawsuit in response to, among other things, DFS-issued “guidance” letters that encourage financial institutions to “take prompt actions” to manage “reputational risk” that is associated with doing business within the gun industry.

The NRA distributed 100,000 stickers to cover YETI's name. The stickers were given out for free at their annual meeting in Dallas earlier this month.

The United States Supreme Court refused to hear an appeal of 9th circuit ruling in the Teixeira v. Alameda County case.

In 2010, John Teixeira wanted to open a gun shop in Alameda County five miles south of Oakland in the unincorporated neighborhood of San Lorenzo. He planned on not only selling guns but also he was also going to offer gun-safety training and firearms repairs. The Alameda County zoning office denied the permit because it was less than 500 feet from residential properties.

The next battleground in the gun debate may be taxes

As these changing demographics and consumer habits gradually erode the still-powerful gun culture, its political base is likely to erode as well. Like water running downhill, this is the natural order of things. And if you take this reality and layer it on top of another one—namely, the ongoing fiscal pressure that states and cities across the country constantly face—it suggests that guns and ammunition could be increasingly seen as an undertapped source of revenue.

There are precedents for this. Tobacco, a ubiquitous product half-a-century ago, gradually became politically easier to target and tax as demographics and changing consumption patterns gradually weakened a once all--powerful and unassailable industry.

A citizen owning automatic weapons does not “establish justice” but rather enables future shootings and denies victims their right to life. Police extensively train with and carry firearms to “insure domestic tranquility,” employing them under designated conditions. The world’s best military (U.S.) trains with firearms in order to “provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity.” In 1787, the Second Amendment specified “A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free State …” provided that citizens could respond and defend our country when, in its infancy, it was vulnerable to attack from different European forces.

The policy states: “No visitor shall carry, maintain or store a weapon, concealed or otherwise, in any controlled space owned, leased or controlled by the university or at any university event.” That applies to staff and students, too. The sole weapons exception is a folding pocket knife. Those are permitted if the blade is shorter than three inches.

All of the above is noteworthy for a couple of reasons. The snarky one is this: Hundreds of Republicans, including some of western Virginia’s staunchest defenders of the Second Amendment, will gather Saturday in a gun-free zone (the JMU Convocation Center) to choose a GOP nominee to replace retiring Rep. Bob Goodlatte, R-Roanoke County.

The National Rifle Association is suing Gov. Andrew Cuomo and the state Department of Financial Services for allegedly targeting insurance companies they partner with to offer protection programs for gun owners.

In a statement, Cuomo called the lawsuit an attempt by the NRA to advance its “dangerous agenda to sell more guns.”

Earlier this month, New York State’s Department of Financial Services fined Lockton Companies, a private insurance broker, and the Illinois Union Insurance Company, for their involvement in the NRA’s “Carry Guard” insurance program. The companies paid $7 million and $1.3 million in fines respectively.

The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday upheld an Alameda County law barring gun stores within 500 feet of residential properties in a blow to gun rights advocates.

The high court declined to take up the case of businessman John Teixeira and his partners who found the California county’s zoning ordinances made it impossible to find a commercial property where they could operate a gun store.
