The Crazy Things Pacifists Tell Me

I don’t bring it up with strangers. That said, sometimes people find out I’m a gun owner. The way they respond is remarkable. I assume that they are sincere in what they say, but that assumption is strained from time to time. Their comments are more of a confession about themselves than an honest question about me. I usually bite my tongue because of the social situation. Then it occurred to me that other gun owners must be hearing similar comments. I’ve kept my answers to myself, but now I’ll share them with you.

What have they said to you?

Safety in the skies is a responsibility that falls onto the flight crew as soon as the cabin doors are locked and loaded, but after recent, violent encounters aboard passenger planes, flight attendants are taking safety into their own hands.

In an undisclosed building near LaGuardia Airport, it was early morning and more than a dozen flight attendants on their day off were being trained in self-defense.

Ed.: But no self-defense firearms.

The Texas Legislature has approved Senate Bill 16 by Senate authors Senator Robert Nichols (R-Jacksonville) and Joan Huffman (R-Houston) and House sponsor Representative Phil King (R-Weatherford), which lowers the License to Carry fees in the State of Texas.

“I am thankful to Governor Abbott, Lt. Governor Patrick and my colleagues in the Legislature for their support of this important bill,” said Senator Nichols. “With one of the highest fees in the nation to obtain a license to carry, an undue burden had been imposed on Texans rights to obtain a license to carry. By lowering the fee, we have made it more affordable to exercise their Second Amendment rights.”

A group of law enforcement leaders and gun-control activists led by former Rep. The coalition argues that the bills would make law enforcement less safe.

Michigan’s House of Representatives is considering a bill that would abolish a concealed carry permit requirement in the state, thus making the Second Amendment the only permit law-abiding residents of the state would need.

It is already legal to carry a handgun openly without a permit in Michigan. The situation is as it was in New Hampshire, where law-abiding citizens could carry their handguns openly without having to ask government’s permission but were suddenly obligated to ask government before carrying if their jacket or sweatshirt hung down over the gun.

In my latest articles (Gun Safety Rules: parts I, II, III), I have shared the fundamental gun safety rules that every gun owner should always follow.

I would now like to talk about probably the most important thing you need in a violent confrontation with or without guns: How to avoid it.

Even when you have the legal and moral ground in a violent confrontation, the best option is to avoid it. Real life is not a movie. There are no heroes or a grandiose happy ending after a violent confrontation.

A few years ago, some Seattle police officers came up with a novel plan to battle DOJ-imposed limits on their use-of-force. Since their union wisely decided to steer clear of this ridiculous legal battle, the officers chose to crowdfund their way into the federal court system.

Armed with a little over $3,000 and some particularly dubious arguments, the protesting cops filed a lawsuit claiming their Second and Fourth Amendment rights were being violated by the DOJ's use-of-force restrictions. It did not go well.

A bill that would ban guns from some state hospitals was debated and then sent back to committee in the Kansas Senate Tuesday.

The Wichita Eagle reported lawmakers had amended the measure, House Bill 2278, to allow concealed carry permit holders to carry firearms into hospitals and prohibit psychiatric patients from possessing them.

Instead of voting upon the amended version of the bill, lawmakers chose to send it back to the Senate’s budget committee to try and reach a comprise.

The exchange started when Demings wrote on Facebook that she supports "common sense gun legislation" and "stand[s] against the gun lobby."

Hours later, a Facebook user referenced an incident from February 2009, when Demings served as the chief of police in Orlando, Fla. Someone broke into Demings' vehicle at the time and stole her agency-issued 9 mm Sig Sauer gun, ammunition, handcuffs, and baton. An internal-affairs investigator subsequently gave Demings a "written censure" for not properly securing her firearm in her car.

The organization described the program as “America’s most comprehensive insurance and legal coverage” for those who carry a gun.

The booth was a flurry of activity. Potential customers lined up for a chance to experience a virtual reality scenario where deadly force is necessary.

NRATV host Grant Stinchfield erroneously claimed that “anti-gunners out there could weaponize” a new gun violence prevention bill in Nevada in order to get law enforcement to confiscate their neighbors’ legally owned firearms.

The legislation in question, a type of protection order that allows temporary removal of firearms from certain “high-risk” individuals, actually allows only household members to file a report requesting the removal.

A federal judge has dismissed a lawsuit that alleged the Oklahoma Department of Human Services violated foster parents' right to bear arms.

The lawsuit was filed after the department asked parents to sign a written agreement requiring weapons to be locked up.

The suit argued that the department's agreement obligated foster parents to keep their firearms locked up, to only carry their weapons around a child if it was required by their employer and to ensure weapons in automobiles were unloaded, disabled and locked in a container.
