"If you've had concerns about security as you buckled yourself into an airline seat, here's an uncomfortable fact: the pilots sitting in the cockpit are perhaps more concerned than you are."

"The Coalition of Airline Pilots Associations points to the recent arrest of a Russian man in possession of more than 1,300 counterfeit law enforcement badges, saying the government's failure to modernize airport identification technology poses a serious threat to the flying public."

"The coalition cites published reports that the high-quality fakes were discovered along with New York Police Department uniforms, semiautomatic rifles and the used casing from a shoulder-fired missile. The badges, imported from Taiwan, skillfully mimic those of the FBI, Drug Enforcement Agency and NYPD, among others." ...

"Some Senate Republicans are preparing to launch an assault on the District's gun laws."

"Senators Kay Bailey Hutchison and John Cronyn of Texas and George Allen of Virginia are signing on as sponsors of the District of Columbia Personal Protection Act of 2005."

"The measure would repeal the District's prohibition against most private handgun ownership. It's similar to a measure with 123 co-sponsors in the House."

"Supporters of the measure say the legislation will restore the Second Amendment rights of District residents guaranteed by the Constitution." ...

Submitter's Note: And it will also conveniently sidestep the possibility of a pending lawsuit from being heard by the Supreme Court and getting a definitive ruling on the Second Amendment.

"In June 2004, two former New Jersey police officers ... shot in the line of duty with a trafficked gun negligently sold by a West Virginia dealer, obtained a $1 million settlement. The dealer had sold the gun, along with 11 other handguns, in a cash sale to a straw buyer for a gun trafficker. After the lawsuit, the dealer, as well as two other area pawnshops, implemented safer practices to prevent sales to traffickers, including a new policy of ending large- volume sales of handguns." ...

"Gun rights supporters claim that gun control contains a 'slippery slope' that gradually but inexorably results in erosion of civil rights. They point to examples like USSR, China, and Nazi Germany as examples where disarmament proceeded government-sponsored genocide against the people living in those countries."

"In early 2005, the British government enacted The Criminal Justice Act of 2003, which allows a previously acquitted person to be retried if 'new and compelling' evidence is produced. Citing the unresolved sexual assault/murder of a young woman in 1989, the government claimed the new law will enable them to retry the accused 'if evidence such as DNA material, new witnesses or a confession came to light.' ..." ...

FULL TEXT BELOW:

Police are trying to figure out if a man in his late 30s who showed up a convenience store bleeding from at least three gunshot wounds is a victim or a suspect.

The man drove himself to a Diamond Shamrock at the intersection of Timber View and Culebra Road at 4 a.m. suffering from gunshot wounds to his face and upper chest.

He told police that he was shot at a home nearby.

But the occupants of the home told a different story.

They told police the man showed up at their home armed with a handgun and tried to kick in a door, and in self-defense they shot him with a .22-caliber rifle.

The man was transported to University Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

No charges have been filed against the homeowners.

Peaceful demonstrators slaughtered in cold-blood as the U.N. pontificates and postures to justify its role in legitimizing the coup in February 2004 against the democratically elected government of Jean-Bertrand Aristide."

"On February 28, 2005, the first anniversary of the coup against the constitutional government, the PNH fired at unarmed demonstrators as the U.N. stood by.
