A sheriff’s deputy has been sentenced to a month in jail for firing his gun inside a Michigan school, sending a bullet through a wall and grazing a teacher, then trying to cover it up.

Adam J. Brown apologized during Monday’s hearing in Bay City, saying he let down the school and law enforcement communities. He earlier pleaded no contest to tampering with evidence.

The Bay City Times reports if he stays out of trouble he’ll avoid a felony on his record.

Police documents show the Bay County deputy fired a pistol in November in Bay City Western High School’s robotics classroom while testing the trigger. The bullet passed into an occupied classroom and hit a teacher in the neck.

S&W rolled out the new M&P M2.0 pistol for the public last January. The 9mm is an improvement on the original M&P polymer pistol line because it is built on a new platform, changing the trigger, grip, frame and finish. On the new model, the slide release is bilateral, which lefties will love. The magazine release also can be changed over for a leftie.

Hunters in New York State harvested an estimated 213,061 deer during the 2016-17 hunting seasons, an estimated five percent increase over 2015-16 levels, Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Commissioner Basil Seggos announced. "Deer hunting in New York is a proud and economically important tradition that is safely enjoyed by hundreds of thousands of residents and visitors each year," Seggos said. "Not only is deer hunting important for providing high quality local protein to families, it is an essential conservation tool that helps reduce negative ecological impacts of deer on forests, farms and communities throughout the state."

From 2014 to 2015, the United States experienced its largest annual increase in firearm deaths over the past 35 years, a 7.8 percent upturn in a single year. In 45 of the 50 states the rate of overall deaths from firearms increased and the firearm homicide rate rose in every state except West Virginia. What did Congress do to confront this problem? Only four bills addressing firearm violence made it out of committee during the 2015-2016 congressional session. Not one was enacted.

Hunting enthusiasts can continue to cruise into the sunset on their tax-free airboats, all-terrain vehicles and pirogues – at least one weekend a year — after a bill proposing changes to the state’s Second Amendment sales tax holiday died in the House Ways and Means Committee Monday. Senate Bill 22 by Sen. Barrow Peacock, R-Bossier City, would have removed airboats, ATVs, tree stands, blinds and other hunting regalia from eligibility for the tax-free shopping holiday. The bill was voluntarily deferred after representatives opposed the legislation in an 11-4 vote.

I really hope you don’t mind, but it’s time to wax philosophic. I just say this as a warning. Some of you may want to flip over to a few pages and read your horoscope, or if you want even less grip on reality, the editorial page. Again, this is just a warning, when I get in one of these preachy moods there is no telling what might be said.

What started out as a Facebook discussion morphed into an entire movement. Last Summer, as Kevin Hertzog and his friends were mourning the Pulse shooting in Orlando, it was a simple conversation that kicked off, what would eventually become, Gays Against Guns, or GAG. “A friend [on Facebook] had said ‘this is awful’ and I said, ‘we should do something about this,’” Hertzog, 52, said. His friend, Brian Worth, jumped into the conversation. “Brian said ‘we should get together,’” and then, they just did.

A controversial gun bill passed by state lawmakers is getting calls for a veto. One of Tennessee's big city mayors says local governments could be forced to spend millions of dollars to comply with the measure, or face lawsuits from gun rights groups like the NRA. The controversial bill grew out of the guns and parks measure passed a few years ago by lawmakers that left open a lot of costly questions for local governments.

The Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Virginia Tech University, and Sandy Hook School in Connecticut all stir memories of deep fear and sorrow. Mass shootings can happen anywhere, at any time.
In rural areas like northern Wisconsin, county courthouses could be prime targets. Taylor County trained for that possibility this week with an active-shooter simulation.

This feature appears in the June ‘17 issue of NRA America’s 1st Freedom, one of the official journals of the National Rifle Association. April 10 marked a new era for freedom in the Unites States. On that day, U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts administered the oath of office to Neil Gorsuch, making him the ninth member of the nation’s high court. And it largely came about because of people like you—National Rifle Association members willing to put in the time and effort to ensure a U.S. Supreme Court that recognizes the Second Amendment as protecting an individual right to keep and bear arms.

A bill in the State Legislature allowing concealed carry license holders to bring their guns onto school grounds has drawn fire from the Mequon-Thiensville School Board. Guns are currently barred in schools, but a Republican-backed bill in both houses of the Legislature would allow concealed carry license holders to bring their guns onto school grounds. The bill, which more broadly would remove the training and state permits currently required for concealed carry, would allow gun owners without a license to bring their gun into a "school zone" but not the school building.

A former teacher convicted of gunning down her boyfriend has been sentenced to 30 years in state prison. The sentence for Virginia Vertetis was handed down Tuesday after a judge rejected her lawyers' request to overturn the verdict and order a new trial. Morris County prosecutors had sought a 50-year term for the 55-year-old Mount Olive resident. The judge said Vertetis has not accepted responsibility for the 2014 death of retired New York City police officer Patrick Gilhuley, but cited her age as part of his decision to impose a lesser sentence.

The finish was inspired by the popularity of the company's limited-edition Desert Eagle models offered with a Kryptek finish in May 2015. The company will offer its Kryptek finish on pistols in Kahr's Value Series of handguns, and all of the options are ideal for concealed-carry use. All four guns are finished using a water-transfer method that coats the frames in the Kryptek finish. According to the company, the method has been proven to withstand hard use.

Over the last few months, there has been several letters published I’d like to comment on. First, there’s the stink the left made about Sen. Miloscia’s comments. The senator has the same First Amendment right as anyone else. Except when a bunch of butt-hurt leftist wackos disagree? No. It doesn’t worth that way, sorry. Wasn’t it the left’s slogan, “working together,” or did I miss the part that said only when they get their way?

July 21, 2016 began as any other day for Wayne Parish. The Crystal Springs resident woke up, bid his family farewell and went to work at Performance Oil on McDowell Road in Jackson Mississippi. But the transformative events of that fateful day changed Parish’s life forever. On that day, the hard-working, law-abiding family man crossed paths with a 17-year-old delinquent named Charles McDonald. Despite his youth, McDonald was already an aspiring criminal and a recidivist offender. On July 21, his mother, Yvette Mason-Sherman, tried to take him to the Henley-Young Youth Detention facility, which is located next to Performance Oil where Parish worked.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
"Let us contemplate our forefathers, and posterity, and resolve to maintain the rights bequeathed to us from the former, for the sake of the latter. The necessity of the times, more than ever, calls for our utmost circumspection, deliberation, fortitude, and perseverance. Let us remember that `if we suffer tamely a lawless attack upon our liberty, we encourage it, and involve others in our doom.' It is a very serious consideration...that millions yet unborn may be the miserable sharers of the event." --Samuel Adams, speech in Boston, 1771
