True ‘common sense’ from an Indiana lawmaker

Gun prohibitionists repeatedly use the “common sense” argument to push their anti-Second Amendment agenda, but an Indiana state representative, writing yesterday in the Indianapolis Star may have trumped them all with a 353-word opinion on concealed carry that should apply to every state.
State Rep. Jim Lucas, a Seymour Republican, noted that he has previously introduced legislation to eliminate licensing requirements for citizens to carry a firearm. And then he laid it out in simple language that anyone can understand, provided they are not so mindlessly entrenched in the no-gun Utopia myth that they’ve abandoned reality. |

I have a different view than Ed Smith's recent letter to the editor regarding proposed concealed carry legislation.
The House and Senate may soon take up outstanding legislation that would help return the existing, constitutionally recognized and protected right of Americans across the country to keep and bear arms. The proposal, the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act (S.498), also referred to as mandatory concealed carry, was introduced in the Senate by John Cornyn, R-Texas. Under this legislation, it would eliminate a state's ability to infringe upon constitutionally protected gun rights of individuals from another state who can carry guns within its own borders.

The Texas Legislature has approved fines for governmental entities that post signs prohibiting the carrying of concealed handguns in areas where licensed Texans are allowed to carry them.
Authored by tea party-backed Republican Sen. Donna Campbell, the plan passed both chambers with little debate, despite opposition from some municipal groups.
Saturday's House approval 116-23 sends it to Gov. Greg Abbott to be signed into law.
Local governments and other official entities would be fined if they post signs that might intimidate license-holders who are within their rights to carry weapons. |

Guns were fired on Sunday on Courthouse Square in Stroudsburg on Sunday as part of a 21-gun salute to help celebrate Memorial Day weekend.
For decades Memorial Day services in Stroudsburg have included the patriotic salute.
However, this year that was threatened when Stroudburg's Borough Manager told Memorial Day event organizers that an ordinance doesn't allowed guns to be fired in the borough.
"It's been on the books since the 1980's," Suzanne McCool, a Monroe County Commissioner, said regarding the ordinance. "However, every year when we've had a ceremony here people have shot blanks." |

On May 20, smart gun manufacturer Armatix admitted they have entered into “chapter 11-style restructuring proceedings in Germany.”
Armatix makes the iP1 smart gun, which Democrats raved about and pushed to mandate as the only gun that could legally be sold in New Jersey in 2014. Democrats were joined in this effort by gun control groups like the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence.
The iP1 is only chambered in .22 long rifle and costs $1,800 per gun. The .22 lr is a meager round for self-defense coupled with a price tag that is over three times the amount Americans pay for .45 caliber Glock, and nearly four times the amount Americans pay for a .38 Special polymer revolver from Ruger. |

On the one year anniversary of Elliot Rodger’s May 23 Santa Barbara attack, Richard Martinez said he will continue to push gun control in the United States because attacks like Rodger’s “don’t happen in other countries.”
Martinez son, Christopher Michaels-Martinez, was one of three shot and killed by Rodger.
According to the Associated Press, Martinez said, “I’m not anti-gun, I’m anti-gun violence.” And while he has dedicated his life to gun control, he says he “still supports the rights of hunters and target-shooters.” |

Faculty and students have expressed concern about the potential impact on the classroom of an upcoming law that will allow people to carry concealed guns inside buildings on Kansas college campuses.
After July 1, 2017, campus buildings in Kansas have to allow concealed carry unless the building has adequate security. But Board of Regents chairman Kenny Wilk said universities won’t be installing security at all of their 800-plus buildings. |

Gov. Rick Scott signed 44 bills into law Thursday, including a measure that will allow Floridians without concealed-weapons licenses to carry guns during mandatory emergency evacuations.

The new gun law (SB 290) went into effect as soon as Scott signed it. Backers say the measure will allow people to bring their weapons when forced to leave home because of hurricanes and other disasters.
“It’s really a no-brainer,” National Rifle Association lobbyist Marion Hammer said. “When people are forced to leave their homes, they have a right to carry their possessions with them --- including their firearms to protect their property.”

SB175, which would restrict people convicted of domestic violence from having a gun and broaden the definition of justifiable homicide, passed the Assembly in a 25-17 vote on Friday.

Nevada senators approved the so-called Pop-Tarts gun bill, a Republican-backed measure barring schools from punishing students for playing with toy guns. Senators voted 15-6 to approve AB121, which would forbid elementary and middle schools from punishing students who play with toy guns or pretend to use a firearm.

A leading national gun safety group, joined by members of Congress, is calling for investigations of the National Rifle Association’s fundraising practices and finances in response to a Yahoo News investigation published last week.
The Coalition to Stop Gun Violence (CSGV) has launched a nationwide petition campaign asking the Federal Election Commission and the Internal Revenue Service to investigate “violations of federal law” by the National Rifle Association. The CSGV is made up of 48 organizations, among them religious, social justice, political and child welfare groups. |

Legislation that critics said would render gun permits all but meaningless in Texas appeared Sunday night to have a strong chance of becoming law.
Most Senate Democrats — including José Rodríguez of El Paso — opposed the bill itself, which would allow openly carrying handguns so long as a person has a permit. But they provided the critical margin to pass a tea-party-supported amendment saying that police can't stop people with guns with the sole purpose of asking to see their permits. |

There’s one refrain which the Democrat choir always breaks out whenever they propose new gun restrictions: Oh, we’re not trying to establish some national registry of gun owners. Perish the thought! But when you look under the covers of these various proposals, they all seem to come suspiciously close to doing just that. (Not that we’re suggesting anything here, mind you. Perish the thought.) And yet that same discussion has arisen once again now that Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney has resurrected the prospect of “closing loopholes” at gun shows. Funny how that works, eh? (From The Hill) |

OK, maybe not "phaser rifles" like the one Captain Kirk is hoisting here, but something close to it. Because as DefenseOne.com reported last month, the Army is already testing a precursor to such weapons, dubbed a "Burke Pulser."

After nearly 50 years in business, the North Country Sportsman's Club wants a new agreement with the town.
Bob Otty, president of the shooting range's board, submitted a proposal in early April for a new agreement regarding the club's operating hours. The club asked for an additional weekday of shooting.
The Williston range offers trap shooting to about 100 club members and guests.
That proposal was rejected by the Town of Williston, Otty said. |
