MI: Novi police offer half-priced CPL classes for men this Father's Day

The Novi Police Department announced it will offer half-price concealed pistol license training classes for men in honor of Father's Day.
The class, which usually costs $150, will be $75 for all men on June 17, a day before the dad holiday and does not require participants to be Novi residents.
The civilian pistol safety class class lasts from 8 a.m to 5 p.m. at he Novi Police Department Training Center, 45125 10 Mile in Novi, and fulfills the classroom and shooting requirements to obtain a CPL.
The first have of the day is classroom training, while the remainder will take place on the Novi police shooting range.

Guns often are among the hottest issues during a legislative session, but not in 2017.
The most-discussed item was the "stand your ground" measure that would have allowed more freedom to use deadly force in self defense. But that did not make it into a final bill.
"The 2017 legislative session was adjourned last night without a single dangerous gun bill being passed -- or even being voted on," the Protect Minnesota anti-gun organization wrote to members Tuesday. "This is an amazing accomplishment in a year when the 'gun rights' party is in control of both the House and the Senate." |

This week the Senate voted 35-3 in favor of a bill that would allow individuals filing for bankruptcy to keep up to three guns worth up to $3,000 total.
In South Carolina, bankruptcy filers are allowed to keep a home, car, tools of a trade, and so on, up to a certain value. While a case can be made for some kinds of exceptions, the purpose of the bankruptcy process is for the debtor to pay whatever reasonably can be paid toward debts that exceed assets, and then start over with the bare necessities. |

An incident between two friends at a home in a Dekalb, Texas, on Sunday night left one of the men dead and the other saying he fired in self-defense.
Bowie County deputies were called to the home just before midnight and when they arrived, they found a man, identified as Rodney Clay Peters, suffering from a gunshot wound.
According to Peters’ roommate, Nicholas Paul, Peters had been acting “crazy” while carrying a rifle around the house. But when Peters entered Paul’s bedroom and aimed the rifle at him, Paul retrieved a handgun from beside his bed and fired a single shot, striking Peters. |

Barring the unexpected, concealed weapons soon will be allowed in state hospitals, psychiatric institutions and on the state’s public university campuses.
That’s happening in just 38 days unless pro-common-sense lawmakers pull a rabbit out of their hats and muscle through a new law. But that looks increasingly unlikely as the Legislature struggles with big issues in its ongoing wrap-up session.
C’mon, admit it: Many of you didn’t think this would really happen. You didn’t think your freshman son or daughter could wind up sitting next to another student who’s legally packing heat in a giant lecture hall where intense arguments erupt out of nowhere. |

The 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals' ruling came in the case of Alexander Pauler, a Wichita man who was accused of violating a federal law that prohibits someone from owning a gun if they've been convicted of misdemeanor domestic violence "under federal, state or tribal law."
Prosecutors said Pauler couldn't have a gun because he had been convicted of misdemeanor domestic violence under a Wichita ordinance. But a three-judge panel of the Denver-based appeals court on Tuesday unanimously found that the federal gun law doesn't apply when the underlying domestic abuse violation is under a municipal ordinance. |

Concealed carry permits rose 215 percent between 2007 and 2015, and the murder rate dropped 14 percent during that same time period.
In other words, more guns being carried for self-defense correlated with fewer murders.
On May 22, Breitbart News reported that the demand for concealed carry permits witnessed its greatest surge ever between May 2016 and May 2017. Fox News referenced Crime Prevention Research Center (CPRC) data showing there were 14.5 million permit holders in May 2016 and approximately 15.7 million in May 2017. |

Evidence collected in Monday's shooting of an Arkansas man by a McMinn County, Tenn., homeowner will go to the grand jury for a determination of wrongdoing.
Christopher Mackey of Arkansas was in serious condition at University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville on Tuesday afternoon, McMinn County Sheriff Joe Guy said. Mackey had been shot at least once by County Road 82 resident Paul Brent Burgess of Riceville. The men's ages are unknown.
No charges have been filed against either man. |

Public health experts say the laws could significantly reduce unintentional shootings that kill and injure hundreds of children every year, particularly if they allow for felonies against violators and are paired with educational campaigns to raise awareness.
But legislative efforts in dozens of states have run into opposition from lawmakers aligned with the National Rifle Association. Critics say the laws trample on the rights of gun owners who should be able to store their guns however they want and unfairly single out guns. Swimming pools and prescription drugs also can cause accidental deaths of children, they say. |

The Knife Rights bill creates serious reform and institutes significant protections for knife owners across the nation. While based on the concept of the Firearms Owners Protection Act (FOPA), it corrects numerous flaws in that legislation.
It provides penalties for local officials who violate the law. It protects all legal acts of possession, carry, or transport. It eliminates the federal ban on the interstate commerce, manufacture, or importation of automatic knives. The repeal of that ban is long overdue.
The AKTI bill is also based on FOPA. Unfortunately it offers only minimal improvement over existing law, and contains all the flaws that have been noted in FOPA. |

While most of the country is enjoying a brief respite from elections, my home state of Virginia is getting ready to undergo our off-year elections for state office. I have no doubt that anti-gun advocates, emboldened by Hillary Clinton’s win in the state last November, are going to pour a ton of money and resources into the races across the commonwealth. Michael Bloomberg spent big here two years ago in an attempt to flip the state Senate. He’ll be back, and I’m sure he’ll be backing whatever Democrat gets the gubernatorial nomination as well. Both Tom Perriello and Ralph Northam seem to be running away from their moderate pasts as quickly as possible and embracing gun control as a campaign issue. |

While pro-Second Amendment legislation like National Reciprocity and the Hearing Protection Act weave their slow, methodical course through Congress—countered at every turn by gun control Democrats and their surrogates in the media—state legislatures around the country are working to repeal gun control and to expand the exercise of our Second Amendment-protected rights via pro-self-defense legislation.
It is important to note that state legislatures are not working to expand Second Amendment-protected rights, but to expand the exercise of the rights that are already there. These rights have been denied to the people via myriad gun control schemes. |

A man has died after being shot Tuesday by a woman who told police she did it in self-defense.
Police say 37-year-old Leeartavious Barrett was shot once in the head by a woman who claims he attacked her as she left her apartment early Tuesday morning.
Police say it happened just after 7:30 a.m. at Country Club Marina Apartments in the 4300 block of Lakeshore Drive.
The woman told police that she was hit in the face and the head and that she managed to grab her handgun and shoot Barrett while he was strangling her. |

House Bill 995 / Senate Bill 1077 clears up language in the 2015 guns in parks legislation, which allowed carry permit holders to carry in public parks except in the immediate vicinity of property that was in use by a school for an athletic event or other school-related activity. Specifically, the newly-enacted law provides that a park is "in use" by a school only when one or more students are physically present on the property for an athletic event or school-related activity. Further, the new law provides that park property is not "in use" by a school solely because school equipment is stored on the premises. |

Hackers may have breached a database and obtained the names of over 16,000 concealed carry permit holders in Florida.
The state’s Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services announced the breach this week.
According to the Associated Press, the hackers allegedly reached the information via “the online payment system that processes payments for applications and permits.” Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam has directed the department to review and assess its cyber security. |

Six-time Olympic medalist and USA Shooting Team member Kim Rhode visited Hillsdale College on May 11. Rhode, the first summer Olympian to win six medals in six consecutive Olympic Games, met with Hillsdale’s national championship-winning shotgun team.
Hillsdale College’s Shooting Sports Team, which has won the last four Division III national titles in clay target shooting, performed a demonstration at the John A. Halter Shooting Sports Education Center, during which Rhode offered pointers and advice on shooting and the perseverance needed to achieve your dreams. |
