I wish I could say that I have never seen such ignorance about the Bill of Rights as expressed by John Otis in his April 27 letter (“Right to bear arms”), but I cannot. Such ignorance is rampant thanks to our education system.
Outside of his attacks on the NRA, the Bill of Rights does not, as he states, grant any rights whatsoever; it assumes them. The Bill of Rights simply enumerates some of the natural, preexisting rights. The ninth Amendment was added to allay concerns expressed by the Federalists that listing specific rights might cause a future government to try to encroach on rights not enumerated. |

The debate over the right to openly carry a handgun will continue in the Texas House of Representatives.
Senate Bill 17, which would allow concealed handgun license holders to openly carry their weapons, was assigned to the House Homeland Security and Public Safety Committee on May 5.
Sen. John Whitmire, D-Houston, was the only law-maker to oppose and comment on the bill when it passed the Senate floor with a 20-10 vote March 17. |

Tim McGraw doubled-down on his planned July benefit concert for gun control group Sandy Hook Promise several weeks ago, asserting that he was supporting the “Sandy Hook community” with the concert, despite the fact that the benefit only supports Sandy Hook Promise.
Many of the families who lost victims in the December 2012 massacre do not support the radical gun control group, and eleven families—more than half—who lost children in the 2012 attack said they have nothing at all to do with the group. Several families of victims are actively opposed to the goal of Sandy Hook Promise. |

Dallas County has begun confiscating guns from certain domestic abusers yesterday, in what experts are saying is a step to protect Texas victims.
Guns pose the most dangerous threat to domestic violence victims according to the Texas Council on Family Violence.
But many argue that confiscating them is a bit drastic
"No guns allowed."

A new policy being implemented in Dallas County is allowing law enforcement to confiscate guns from convicted abusers, subjects of permanent protective orders, and anyone seeking bond or probation for a family violence case. |

Failed efforts to allow people to carry concealed weapons on college campuses and to allow some public-school employees and volunteers to be armed will be back before lawmakers next year.
Marion Hammer, lobbyist for the National Rifle Association and the Unified Sportsmen of Florida, said Wednesday those measures will return despite running into opposition in the Senate this year.
“The things that were worth working on this year will be worth working on next year,” Hammer said. “All of these good pieces of legislation will be back until they pass.” |

The Bellevue-based Second Amendment Foundation and the Texas firm of Defense Distributed today filed a lawsuit against the State Department in Federal District Court in Austin that could have far-reaching First and Second Amendment implications.
The lawsuit alleges prior restraint by the government over on-line publication of information related to three-dimensional printing of arms. The lawsuit was filed in U.S. District Court for the Western District of Texas, Austin Division. Defense Distributed is headquartered in Austin. A copy of the complaint may be seen here. |

“If a ban on semi-automatic guns and large-capacity magazines reduces the perceived risk from a mass shooting, and makes the public feel safer as a result, that’s a substantial benefit,” Judge Frank Easterbrook wrote in the majority opinion for a 3-judge 7th US Circuit Court of Appeals panel. Businesses would lose the ability to ban guns at events held at parks, recreational areas and fairgrounds under a bill that has passed the Oklahoma Legislature and is pending before Gov. Mary Fallin.
The measure would imperil national shows, athletic competitions and concerts that pump hundreds millions of dollars into the economy, said Roy Williams, president and chief executive officer of the Greater Oklahoma City Chamber. Businesses that run these events often contractually require that guns be banned.
“It could literally kill dozens, dozens and dozens of regional and national events,” said Williams, who is urging the governor to veto it. |

One of the most alternately inspirational and maddening narratives in the struggle for comprehensive gun rights is the unsteady progress of permitless (sometimes called “constitutional”) carry. The term denotes legal recognition of the right to carry a firearm (usually a handgun) without a special permit—the Second Amendment to the Constitution being sufficient for this cause. Anyone not specifically prohibited from carrying a sidearm would thereby be free to exercise their right to arms without navigating yards of red tape and paying restrictive fees. |

You may read Michigan’s controversial 2006 stand-your-ground style self-defense law slightly differently. “We don't try to make it look like a man's tool,” said Melissa Blackmon. “These are for women."
Blackmon is with Damsel in Defense, a self-defense company started by two moms in Idaho in 2011. They were looking for non-lethal ways to protect themselves and their families. Blackmon helped bring it to Charlotte 18 months ago. She says the goal of the company is to make women comfortable and confident so they're not someone a criminal is looking to attack. |

A Minneapolis police officer has been relieved of duty while his department investigates a profanity-laced video in which he apparently threatens to break the legs of a suspect if he attempts to escape.
The March incident was recorded on a camera phone by one of the young men being arrested in south Minneapolis. In the video, the unidentified officer can be heard telling the suspect: “Plain and simple, if you [expletive] with me, I’m gonna break your legs before you get a chance to run.”
It was not clear what led to the arrest, but at one point the youth is heard asking the officer why he was being taken into custody, to which the officer responds: “Because I feel like arresting you.”

A number of state legislatures voted this year to liberalize gun carry laws in 2015. For example the Texas legislature voted to legalize the open carry of properly holstered handguns, and the Kansas legislature voted to rescind the need for a concealed handgun permit to carry concealed handguns . . . Like Kansas, the West Virginia state legislature also passed legislation (SB347) to repeal the permit requirement to conceal carry. . . . NC: Raleigh officer, wife asking for $50K in hot coffee case

Raleigh, N.C. — Attorneys for a Raleigh police officer began making the case Monday that he should be compensated the burns, blisters and emotional damage he suffered when a hot cup of coffee spilled on his lap in January 2012.
Kohr and his wife are suing the coffee giant, claiming that a lid popped off the cup of coffee he ordered at the Starbucks on Peace Street and the cup folded in on itself. They are seeking $50,000, including damages, attorney fees and medical costs.
Submitters note: And the schmuck didn't even pay for the coffee. Give me a break. |
