MI: Macomb County clerk files suit to allow firearms inside government buildings

Embattled Clerk Karen Spranger is suing Macomb County to allow firearms in two government buildings. Thursday, Spranger filed a lawsuit with a long list of grievances.
Spranger said after repeated requests for armed security at her office, 120 N. Main St., the county told her to find it in her own budget. Now, she’s suing to allow her own employees to carry firearms inside the county buildings.
Spranger is suing the entire county, Board of Commissioners, County Exec. Mark Hackle & the Board of Ethics.
The suit begins with a request to allow firearms inside the admin. & Talmer buildings.
Guns are not permitted in the courthouse, but Spranger said she has control of her elected offices and the restrictions do not apply. |

Pew Research Center’s latest in-depth report on what it calls “America’s Complex Relationship with Guns” is revelatory. According to the report, released on Thursday, Americans are becoming more and more comfortable with guns and gun ownership, and less and less enchanted with more gun laws to fight perceived gun violence.
When 3,390 U.S adults were polled in March and April, they were asked whether it was more important to protect gun rights or to control gun ownership. In the year 2000, two-thirds of those polled then favored more gun control. Today, that has dropped to less than half, to just 47 percent. To some, that’s an astonishing revelation. |

Senate Republicans the week filed legislation to stop the controversial requirement for gun dealers along the U.S.-Mexico border to report multiple rifle sales to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives.
Termed the Protecting the Second Amendment Act, the measure was introduced Wednesday by U.S. Sen. Luther Strange, R-Alabama, with Texas Republicans Ted Cruz and John Cornyn signed on as co-sponsors. It aims to repeal a 2011 rule that Federal Firearms License holders in Arizona, California, New Mexico and Texas report whenever, during a five-day period, the same buyer purchases two or more rifles. |

Over at National Review, Charlie Cooke has done an invaluable service by pointing out that the FBI’s brief report on the Alexandria GOP baseball practice shooting “is devastating to the idea that the gun-control measures presently coveted by the Democratic party would have done something to prevent the attack.”
It certainly is. But this gets at the heart of the deeper problem of the American gun control debate, a problem that is both persistent and pervasive: the legal measures the gun control movement generally seeks would be almost completely ineffectual at curbing U.S. gun violence. |

Officials have warned that if a budget is not worked out in coming days, state services supporting gun sales and licensing could be put on hold.
With the Washington Legislature unable to agree on a budget, Gov. Jay Inslee this week called a third special session to deliver a state budget before the current one runs out on June 30. If lawmakers can’t make it work, among the list of services slated to be furloughed July 1 in a partial government shutdown are those concerning firearms dealer and concealed pistol licensing. |

Effective July 1, Georgians with concealed carry permits will be able to lawfully carry their weapons on most of Tech’s campus.
Since the law, previously known as House Bill 280, was signed into law on May 4 the University System of Georgia (USG) has been working to create guidelines for all 28 of its public institutions as they work to accommodate the change within their existing security departments and disciplinary procedures.
On a fundamental level, the law allows those with concealed carry permits to bring their concealed handguns onto public college campuses; as is the case in other carry-friendly areas, only handguns are permitted and they may not be openly displayed. |

On July 1, Australia begins National Firearms Amnesty 2017, the country’s fourth federal firearms buyback (more accurately termed turn-in) or amnesty program since 1987. According to the Australian government, officials hope to capture some of the country’s estimated 260,000 unregistered firearms. The Australian government has also cited the threat of terrorism, and in particular the December 2014 siege on the Lindt Café in Sydney, as justification for the new turn-in. The amnesty period runs to September 30. |

In the wake of the mass shooting in suburban Virginia last week that left House majority whip Steve Scalise (R-LA) and three others wounded, conservatives have been furiously waving the bloody shirt. With left-wing hate filling half the screen, Sean Hannity blamed Democrats, saying they “dehumanize Republicans and paint them as monsters.” Tucker Carlson claimed that “some on the hard left” support political violence because it “could lead to the dissolution of a country they despise.” Others have blamed seemingly anything even vaguely identified with liberalism for inciting the violence—from Madonna to MSNBC to Shakespeare in the Park. |

Steve Scalise, had been smeared by one national media figure and told his wound was “self-inflicted” by a nightly news anchor while he was still in the hospital fighting for his life. Republicans had been scolded for not changing their views on the Second Amendment in response to being attacked, and national media had either moved on from the story or moved on to scolding Republicans for their reaction to it. |

Blair Gladwin, owner of the California based Gladwin Guns and Ammo, filed three class action lawsuits last week against online payment processors PayPal, Stripe, and Square for singling out him and other firearms businesses.
The payment companies required Gladwin and the other owners to reveal the nature of their dealings — after which the payment companies refused to work with them.
Gladwin claims this type of discrimination is a violation of California’s Unruh Civil Rights Act Sections 51, 52(a) and 52(c), a law that protects federally-licensed gun stores from such refusals of business transactions. |

The Tennessee Court of Appeals this month affirmed action by the Metro government to bar gun shows from The Fairgrounds Nashville. The court held that, among other things, allowing or disallowing a gun show at a government-owned recreational facility is a power recognized by state law. |

Northern California police said Friday that a homeowner acted in self-defense when he fatally shot two men during an attempted home invasion robbery.
Brentwood Police officials say surveillance footage from a neighbor's camera is aiding the investigation.

Authorities are investigating an incident at a home in Zephyrhills, Florida, Saturday night that left one man dead and one woman – his ex-girlfriend – claiming she killed the man in self-defense.
Alejandrina Guinn, 38, said Frank Harrison, 45, had been threatening her before he showed up at her home armed with a rifle just before 10:30 p.m. Before Harrison could enter the home, however, Guinn shot him with a handgun.
Harrison died from his injuries and, thus far, Guinn has not been charged. Authorities say at this point it appears to be a case of self-defense, but stressed that the investigation is ongoing. Police said the encounter was captured on surveillance video, which has not been released. |

In the days when smoothbore flintlock muskets were the weapons of choice for armies worldwide, one of the tricks used by soldiers to increase the effectiveness of their less than accurate weapons was to add a few pellets of buckshot to the usual payload of a large diameter lead roundball. Known as a “Buck and Ball” load, the idea behind the configuration was to combine the decisive impact of a big, heavy lead ball with the potential for hits on multiple targets afforded by the buckshot. Such a load was reported to have been particularly effective in combat situations where tightly packed rows of troops were firing on each other at close ranges. In the Americas, buck and ball musket loads were used in conflicts as late as the Civil War. |

On June 14, an attacker with leftist affiliations opened fire on Republican congressional members, some of whom afterward expressed that they wished they had been armed when the shooting started.
In fact, one Congressman who was not present—Rep. Chris Collins, R-N.Y.—indicated that images of the attack and reports of colleagues who were wounded have convinced him to carry a gun on his person going forward. He told WKBW, “If you look at the vulnerability, I assure you: I have a carry permit. I will be carrying when I’m out and about.” He continued: “On a rare occasion, I’d have my gun in a glove box or something, but it’s going to be in my pocket from this day forward.” |

U.S. Rep. Justin Amash is criticizing the outcome of the trial of the officer responsible for killing Philando Castile, a black man who was shot and killed in Minnesota last year.
“What happened to Philando Castile was horrific—a tragedy for his loved ones and an assault on every American’s right to keep and bear arms,” Amash said on Twitter.
Officer Jeronimo Yanez was found not guilty of second-degree manslaughter last week in the shooting death of Castile. Castile was killed last summer during a traffic stop in Minnesota after he was pulled over for a broken tail light on his car. He was 32 years old. Castile’s girlfriend and her 4-year-old daughter were also in the car.
