In an ironic, yet not surprising turn of events, the man accused of shooting at George Zimmerman during a road rage incident in Lake Mary, Florida, in May will likely use the “Stand Your Ground” defense.
Matthew Apperson, who was charged with aggravated assault and battery following the incident, claimed he acted in self-defense after Zimmerman pointed a gun at him and threatened to kill him. Zimmerman’s attorney, Don West, disagrees with Apperson’s claim to self-defense. |

Was it naïve to think that one of the most blatantly anti-American government initiatives – “Operation Choke Point” – would disappear shortly after Republicans took over the Senate?
Yes, apparently, because it’s June and Congress is still talking about it. Hopefully, not for much longer.
The Senate Banking Committee recently approved an amendment to a regulatory relief bill that would prohibit agencies, including the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp., from participating in the secretly hatched Justice Department initiative. |

The quickest path to death for the Second Amendment is inaction by lawmakers, be they members of the U.S. Congress, state legislators or residents of a small New England town.
Last Monday, voters in Berkley did not approve a proposed bylaw for makeshift target-shooting ranges. This comes after a January incident in which a target-shooter accidentally fired a bullet a mere 1,500 feet across property lines into a house near where a young girl was doing homework. If the bylaw existed prior to this accident, could it have been prevented? Maybe. |

The Obama administration’s controversial bullet ban is coming under fire again from congressional Republicans.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) would be prohibited from using government funds to ban certain armor-piercing ammunition under a provision in the agency’s spending bill.
Rep. Richard Hudson (R-N.C.), who introduced the amendment to block future bullet bans, warned the ATF to keep its “hands off our guns.”
“This amendment is a strong first step to reduce the ATF’s threat to our Second Amendment and protect our right to keep and bear arms,” Hudson said in a speech on the House floor. |

Tuesday marked the first ever National Gun Violence Awareness Day, an event meant to bring attention to victims of gun violence across the country by having participants wear orange.
The concept originated by a group of Chicago teens, members of Project Orange Tree, in the aftermath of the shooting death a friend, 15-year-old Hadiya Pendleton. Her death epitomized the senselessness of the violence in the Windy City. |

As the attention to the Rally went national, and the press chose to redefine its purpose, Ritzheimer began to fear for his safety, the safety of his family and those attending the event. Questioning whether going to the mosque might subject them to the consequences that were attempted in Texas, and successful in France. Subsequently, he began to encourage the lawful carrying of firearms to the event, as a means of self-defense against any attempt by the Muslims to use force to suppress freedom of speech.
As the event drew near, friends, and even people unknown to Ritzheimer, informed him of the reaction from what appears to be the Muslim community, quite possibly from as far away as ISIS in Iraq is. |

As noted in the recently released Unified Agenda (the list of rules and regulations that federal agencies are developing), the Department of Justice is putting the finishing touches on more than a dozen restrictions and infringements of the Second Amendment to be effective by November. They include limitations on high-powered pistols that have recently come onto the market that fire high-velocity .223 caliber rounds, and expansions of the criteria for people who do not “qualify” for the right to own a firearm, including those convicted of domestic abuse and others determined to be “mentally unstable.” |

A bill that critics say would allow gun buyers to avoid background checks could head to a House vote as early as Thursday despite the opposition of Gov. Pat McCrory and the N.C. Sheriffs’ Association.
HB 562 would allow concealed guns in the legislature, which one lawmaker called “a recipe for disaster.”
The bill, entitled the Second Amendment Affirmation Act, passed a House panel by a single vote Wednesday after the chairman, Republican Rep. David Lewis of Harnett County, broke a 13-13 tie. |

The Maine Senate, without debate, Wednesday amended a bill that allows adults 21 years old or older to carry concealed handguns without permits. The amendments ensure veterans and active-duty military members who are at least 18 would also be able to pack heat.
The bill, LD 652, sponsored by state Sen. Eric Brakey, R-Auburn, has ricocheted between the Maine House and Senate three times over the past two weeks.
Lawmakers in the House, where Democrats hold the majority, are expected to vote on the bill with its new amendments Thursday, when it’s possible some Democrats, concerned about the bill’s possible impact on public safety, will attempt additional amendments. |

Anti-gun advocates have been running ads that seem intended to mislead North Carolinians into believing H 562 would eliminate all background checks on handgun purchases. H 562 would simply replace a nearly 100-year-old law that allows sheriffs to use arbitrary, personal discretion when determining who may lawfully purchase a handgun with the FBI’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS). NICS is utilized by the majority of other states, and also used in North Carolina for purchases of rifles and shotguns from licensed dealers. The current antiquated, inefficient law requires law-abiding North Carolina citizens to ask permission from their local sheriff before being allowed to purchase a handgun. |

Whether or not it is legal to openly carry firearms in Arkansas continues to be mired in uncertainty two years after the law that prompted the question passed the Legislature. Renewed interest was sparked this week by comments from Lieutenant Governor Tim Griffin (R) on social media stating he believes open carry is legal.
Griffin’s opinion on the 2013 law - branded at the time as a clean up bill for a law on traveling with a firearm - is supported by Republican Attorney General Leslie Rutledge.

When it comes to rights, polls don’t matter. That’s a point we’ve made regarding the Second Amendment, but it also applies to the First. A right is a right, and it’s derived from God. Your neighbor’s opinion is irrelevant.
CBS News doesn’t get this. It has announced a new poll that shows, not shockingly, that “Americans say money has too much influence in campaigns.” |

Anti-gun New York Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney was joined yesterday by Massachusetts Sen. Edward Markey for the introduction of yet another so-called “smart gun” scheme, this one dubbed the Handgun Trigger Safety Act, which mandates the exclusive manufacture of so-called “personalized handguns,” according to The Hill.
This is the second time in a week that Maloney has floated a gun control measure that, according to critics, is a non-starter. That measure would require every gun owner to carry liability insurance. |
