A communications professor at Wichita State University says she is resigning because a law allowing concealed weapons on campus is “in opposition to the values of higher education.” Deborah Ballard-Reisch, a tenured professor in WSU’s Elliott School of Communication, submitted a letter to WSU president John Bardo this week saying she plans to retire July 1, the day the law is set to go into effect.

Police were called to a gun store in Madison after a smash-and-grab burglary. The incident happened overnight Tuesday at the nRange gun store on North Gallatin Pike. Officials with Metro Nashville Police said someone smashed the window out of the store and got away with multiple guns.

Starting this week, eligible individuals can bring privately-owned guns onto Moody Air Force Base. However, they must stay in their personal vehicles. Moody officials also say they must first meet qualifications and approval from their commander.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Clayton Police Department are seeking the public's help in the recovery of five 5.56/.223 caliber rifles stolen November 23, 2016, during a burglary at Trigger Happy Guns at 227 E. Main Street in Clayton.

The battle between gun rights activists and gun safety proponents is firing up again after a 45-year-old man opened fire on his former coworkers at Fiamma Inc. in Orlando Monday morning, leaving five dead and seven wounded. The gunman entered the business early Monday morning and shot five of his coworkers to death before killing himself. The company is one of the nation's largest manufacturers of awnings for camper vans, motor coaches and sports utility vehicles.

Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard said gun safety locks will now be available for distribution from county patrol vehicles. Bouchard made the gun lock announcement at the county’s annual Gun Safety Awareness press conference on Tuesday afternoon in Pontiac. June is National Gun Safety Awareness Month.

Joseph Lamoureux II was killed on March 16 in the 2300 block of Lexington Village Lane in Colorado Springs.
Lamoureux was staying at his ex-wife's house when he allegedly attacked her. According to police reports, he assaulted and strangled her to the point of unconsciousness. The examiner confirmed this story stating that she had suffered serious bodily injury from being strangled.

The woman charged with shooting a man on the UW campus told police she “thought my whole world was going to end” when she fired her gun. 29-year-old Elizabeth Hokoana told investigators in a recorded interview that she saw the shooting victim, Joshua Dukes, holding a large knife with his right hand while grabbing her husband, Marc Hokoana with his left hand. KING 5 obtained a copy of the interview through a public records request.

Opening statements were held Tuesday in the trial of William Whitson, 47, a Fall River man charged with animal cruelty for stabbing a pit bull five times outside his South Main Street barbershop in 2015. Whitson admits stabbing the pit bull, named Smokey, but says he did it in self-defense after the dog bit his hand and refused to let go when Whitson tried to break up a fight between the pit bull and a smaller dog on the street.

The Florida Senate on Monday sent to Gov. Rick Scott the remaining 24 Senate bills passed during the 2017 session, including a major higher-education package and legislation to revamp part of the “stand your ground” self-defense law. The House on Monday sent the governor one bill (HB 5501), which Scott has announced he will veto since it cuts funding to Enterprise Florida and Visit Florida.

After her car broke down out of Lewiston, Idaho, a young woman accepted a ride from a man who was driving a marked company van. Later, a fisherman snagged one of her body parts out of the Snake River. She didn’t have a concealed pistol permit. An older lady, again in Lewiston, was brutally murdered, by a sex offender, while taking an evening walk in the park. She didn’t have a concealed pistol permit.

Chelsea Handler has blasted the “gun lobby” and issued a renewed call for increased gun control measures days before the talk show host is set to be honored at the anti-gun Brady Center Bear Awards Wednesday night. In an interview with the Hollywood Reporter this week, Handler said she believes President Donald Trump loves the “gun lobby” and “doesn’t give a sh*t about people.”

At the end of Tuesday’s NBC Today, co-hosts Savannah Guthrie and Matt Lauer brought on comedian and newly-named Comedy Central late-night host Jordan Klepper to promote his upcoming one-hour special on the cable channel. Based on Klepper’s work routinely mocking gun-owners as a Daily Show correspondent and the trailer for the satirical documentary, viewers can probably expect another typical left-wing screed against the Second Amendment.

The North Carolina and Michigan state legislatures are both set to take up bills aimed at loosening laws regulating gun owners, an intensifying trend across the country where Republicans control the vast majority of state governments. In North Carolina, a bill is up for a vote this week that would expand rights for Second Amendment advocates in a variety of ways, including no longer requiring citizens to obtain concealed carry permits and lowering the age limit to carry a concealed weapon from 21 to 18.

A Massachusetts police department says they are in the process of disposing close to 400 firearms accumulated over the years. The Eagle-Tribune reports the Lawrence Police Department is destroying the weapons as part of a property audit. Police say the guns were turned in, used as evidence in closed cases or never claimed by their owners.

House members shot down a proposal Tuesday that would have allowed people with concealed carry permits to carry their firearms on public colleges, except in dorms and in entertainment facilities that post signs barring their possession. By a 90-56 vote, House members turned aside a plea by the measure’s sponsor who worried that prohibiting weapons would “create victim zones” where innocents could be easy prey for criminals or terrorists.

Some Democrats in the Legislature are calling for a law that would allow authorities to seize the firearms of people who threaten to commit suicide or hurt others. State Representative Robert Wittenberg (D- Oak Park) sponsored a bill that would allow a judge to issue an “extreme risk protection order.” The order would have to requested by a family member or a law enforcement official.

Some North Carolina senators say putting the right to hunt and fish within the state Constitution would help promote natural resources and outdoor industries while preserving the activities for generations to come. The GOP senators held a news conference Tuesday to promote new legislation that if approved would result in a statewide referendum in November 2018. Bill co-sponsor Sen. Danny Britt of Robeson County says there's no attack against hunting and fishing today but he's worried about the recent decline in hunting, particularly for waterfowl. Urban encroachment is also an issue.
