TAMPA — A Hillsborough County sheriff’s deputy arrested on a boating under the influence charge last month is in the clear after prosecutors declined to move forward with the case.

Still unclear, however, is whether Alexander Craver will get his job back.

Craver, 28, of Riverview was arrested July 1 after a Sheriff’s Office marine patrol deputy stopped the pontoon boat Craver was piloting in Tampa Bay near a spoil island off Apollo Beach. The deputy smelled alcohol on Craver’s breath and he performed poorly on field sobriety tests, an arrest report says.

To be fair, the explainer itself isn’t too bad; unlike a lot of media coverage, it makes clear what Stand Your Ground does and does not do:

Under standard self-defense laws, someone who’s facing a dangerous threat must retreat if it’s safe to do so, with use of force only legally available as a last resort — what’s called the “duty to retreat.” So through this standard, you can only use deadly force if you cannot safely avoid harm or death by, for example, running away or hiding.

CNN's Chris Cuomo seems to think it's okay to assault Nazis. He did not say so Monday night. Instead he strongly implied it throughout a five-minute monologue, in which he dredged up every canard justifying attacking Nazi protesters without actually saying it's okay to attack Nazi protesters, all while maintaining that he was scandalized by the violent elements of Antifa that were on full display at Sunday's "Unite the Right" rally.

Superior Court Judge Kimberly Esmond Adams denied requests for an injunction against Georgia’s campus carry law. Campus carry was signed into law by Gov. Nathan Deal (R) on March 4, 2017, and took effect on July 1, 2017. It allows concealed carry permit holders to carry their guns on public school campuses for self-defense. However, carrying in “dormitories, fraternity and sorority houses, and buildings used for athletic events” is still prohibited.

Things are getting competitive for criminals these days, but there’s also some good news. All criminals can gain a big edge by moving to California. In 2014, the Golden State passed Proposition 47, the so-called Reduced Penalties for Some Crimes Initiative. This changed several felonies such as shoplifting, receiving stolen property and car break-ins into misdemeanors.

Recently, a buddy called me and asked if I would check out his Ruger 10/22. It was “jamming,” as he described it. That seemed strange because 10/22s are famous for being reliable. When he brought it over, the problem was obvious: The rifle had not been cleaned in a long time—perhaps ever. My buddy is far from being a gun guy. A firearm means no more to him than a hammer does to a carpenter. He needs it to dispatch vermin around his place or put meat on the table, but maintaining it is a concept vacant from his wheelhouse.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
[The American Colonies were] all democratic governments, where the power is in the hands of the people and where there is not the least difficulty or jealousy about putting arms into the hands of every man in the country. [European countries should not] be ignorant of the strength and the force of such a form of government and how strenuously and almost wonderfully people living under one have sometimes exerted themselves in defence of their rights and liberties and how fatally it has ended with many a man and many a state who have entered into quarrels, wars and contests with them. — George Mason, "Remarks on Annual Elections for the Fairfax Independent Company" in The Papers of George Mason, 1725-1792, ed Robert A. Rutland (Chapel Hill, 1970).
