Box-Magazine-Fed Shotguns: Game Changing Innovations

Earlier this year, I wrote a column on this site about the pros and cons of detachable-box-magazine-fed (DM for short) shotguns. At the time there were multiple foreign-made DM guns, but the majority of those guns tended to be built on Kalashnikov or AR-10 patterns of unknown quality and, as such, are not all that appealing to me. I believe that a shotgun, with its formidable recoil, should wear a full-contour stock that greatly helps mitigate recoil and control the gun. At the time, the new Mossberg 590M and Remington 870 DM shotguns had been announced, but were not available for T&E, so I promised I’d report back when I had more info.

“I come to bury Caesar, not to praise him,” Mark Antony declares in Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar. Those familiar with the play understand the subtlety of the oratory and its hidden political purposes. There are political parallels now that Republican Sen. John McCain has passed, with Democrats signaling their admiration for the man.

Fifty-five years ago today, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., delivered his famous “I Have a Dream” speech in front of the Lincoln Memorial in our nation’s capital. While Dr. King’s speech is well-known, what is not so widely recognized are his views on firearms.

Hollywood is not exactly known for its conservative values and is the last place one would ever expect to see support for the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution. (RELATED: HOLLYWOOD SHOULD NEVER LECTURE AMERICA AGAIN)

Hell, if you asked the average Limousine Liberal in Hollywood what the “Right to Bear Arms” meant, they would probably start talking about Hugh Jackman’s biceps.

Open or concealed carry for everyday, which is right for you?

Recently the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that open carry outside the home is protected under the Second Amendment. What a victory for gun owners when the liberal 9th Circuit came through with this decision. Folks might be surprised that as a veteran law enforcement officer of 30 years I applaud good citizens carrying a firearm on a daily basis. However, when it comes to a decision to carry openly or concealed, I prefer to keep my sidearm concealed. On occasion I carry openly, mostly in remote location or on the firing range when instructing. Of course there are states where open carry in public is prohibited no matter what or where concealed carry permits are only given to a select few of the very “special and privileged folk”.

Voters waiting for sensible limits on gun purchases received some good news Friday in a ruling by the state Supreme Court: They’ll get a chance to vote this fall on a ballot initiative that seeks to make Washington a safer place to live, work and go to school. But potential bad news lurks in the background: Technical flaws might yet be Initiative 1639’s undoing. And the support of 378,000 people who signed petitions – plus hundreds of thousands more who will vote “yes” on the Nov. 6 ballot – might amount to nothing.

NRA spokesman Dana Loesch’s husband reported a tweet by a man saying their children needed to be murdered, assuming the site would enforce its rules against such threats. He was wrong. After Twitter user Milan Legius criticized Loesch on Sunday for her pro-Second Amendment views and said the murder of her children "needs to happen," Twitter responded to her husband’s report by absolving Legius of wrongdoing.

A Cook County judge has ruled the county’s guns and ammunition tax doesn’t violate the Constitution or the rights of firearm owners, saying the tax is little more than an “inconsequential burden” on gun owners. In 2015, Guns Save Life Inc., a firearms owners rights lobby group, led a challenge to Cook County’s Firearm Tax Ordinance and one of its amendments. Under the policy, the county collects a $25 tax on every firearm sold in the county and a penny or nickel per ammunition cartridge. The plaintiffs said the taxes violate their Second and 14th amendment rights, as well as the Illinois Constitution.

ONE-THIRD OF U.S. military veterans who own firearms keeps at least one of their guns unlocked and loaded with ammunition – a storage practice widely viewed as unsafe. Researchers studied 3,949 people, of whom, 561 were veterans who owned guns. Approximately 33.3 percent of gun owners who were veterans stored at least one of their guns loaded and unlocked. About 22.5 percent stored all of their firearms unloaded and locked. Sixty-six percent stored at least one of their guns unlocked and 46.7 percent stored at least one gun loaded, according to the survey.

If there is one handgun that sticks out in my collection, it’s the Ruger New Model Super Blackhawk. Now in my possession for more than 40 years, the gun remains tight and as accurate as the first day I took it to the range. The Super Blackhawk was introduced in 1973 and touted as being one of the world’s truly great handguns. This .44 Magnum single action was and is a big gun, coming in at 48 ounces with a 7.5-inch barrel.
