"While it's easy these days to buy a gun that's designed specifically for home defense, it can be just as simple to turn a long gun or handgun that you inherited or bought for another purpose into a terrific home-defense tool. Customizing the gun doesn't have to be expensive or difficult, and in some cases the modifications don't even have to be permanent, allowing you to return the gun quickly to its original condition for its original purpose." ...

"The shotgun may very well be the most common home-defense firearm .... Once it's in the house, though, too many people figure it'll be fine 'as is' to defend their homes, and they forget all about it." ...

"Fredericksburg's Freelance-Star published a letter to the editor last week from Megan Sewell, the deputy campaign manager for hunting at the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS). Sewell tried to convince the newspaper's readers that Virginia hunters want the law changed so they can hunt on Sundays because their license fees were raised by a modest amount this year."

"Not so. This animal rightist thinks hunting on Sunday is wrong, but remember, she also believes the hunting of wild game is just as wrong Monday through Saturday, so don't pay too much attention to her phony rants." ...

"... Sewell wrote, 'One day a week free from hunting gives landowners and others who enjoy the outdoors ... a reprieve from hunters' stray bullets." ...

"On Saturday, August 26, I had the opportunity to attend a Clay Shoot/ Cookout fundraiser for Republican gubernatorial candidate Ken Blackwell."

The family event was an afternoon filled with the sounds of children laughing and splashing in the backyard pond, friends and neighbors sharing tales of their summer vacation adventures, and the sharp reports from a host of shotguns. About 20 shooters (probably four times that many were present for the cookout) took turns attempting to dust one of the more than 2,000 clay targets that were thrown over a bean field and into a nearby woods." ...

"Strict enforcement of our local gun laws is critical in the fight against illegal guns. After undercover investigations revealed violations in sales practices at Woodhaven Rifle and Pistol Range, Inc., the gun dealer, Michael Spallone, today pled guilty to disorderly conduct and as a result will pay $1,000 in fines and restitution. In addition, his dealer’s license remains revoked by the NYPD. His guilty plea sends a strong message: any violation of the law that allows illegal guns to flow onto our streets will be vigorously pursued. If you break the law, you will pay the price. I thank Queens District Attorney Richard Brown ... for recognizing that rigid enforcement of gun laws can help prevent the tragic consequences of gun violence."
-------

KABA Note: This is the gun dealer who initially refused to sell to Mayor Mike's sting squad. They came back the next day with proper paperwork, but with a serial number transposed, and badgered him to make the sale, which he did, after checking with the Suffolk County Police who said it was okay. See the story here.

"August 30, 2006 - The next four days could be the most decisive in California since the Proposition 13 property tax revolt of 1978 - only reducing liberty this time, instead of increasing it. As California legislators returned to the Capitol on Monday, they had four days - until midnight on Thursday - to pass or defeat a batch of laws."

"If we sound alarmed, there's good reason." ...

"AB352 mandates that all new pistols sold in 2009 and after must have a special firing pin that imprints a code on the bullet cartridge, to identify who bought the bullet. ... "Philadelphia police commissioner Sylvester Johnson expressed his frustration that his department couldn't stop the homicides, blaming a Congress that he said was beholden to special interest groups such as the National Rifle Association."

"Crime, he said, was no longer a local issue but a national problem that will play a factor in congressional and presidential elections."

"'Capitol Hill doesn't get it,' Johnson said. 'They need to make a call to a parent whose kid got shot in the face. I know the NRA is strong, but we can be stronger.'"

Police officers also got some hands on training with their new rifles. They had a four hour familiarization course with the new Bushmaster X-M 15. The rifle is a semi-automatic civilian version of a military weapon. Officers shot off one hundred rounds to make sure they can operate the new weapon and hit targets. Officers say the old rifle didn't meet their safety standards. St. Joseph Police Department Armor Darryl Lehman said, "We had nothing but problems with it when we purchased it. It wasn't reliable it had malfunctions on the range jamming up not operating and any malfunctioning in policing is not acceptable." Officers receive weapons training every year.

"Since December 2001, 2,530 additional firearms have been licensed in the county - making a total of 9,003 at the end of March."

"But the figure is expected to be even greater next year as officers have already authorised a further 1,671 firearms, which are yet to be acquired."
