Gun rights important to American freedom, but so is responsible ownership

Many years ago my husband, Robert, and I had a protracted skirmish over gun ownership. It wasn’t the only substantive philosophical disagreement we’ve had over the years, but it was certainly one of the most hard-fought. I had great emotion and passion on my side, but in the end, he wore me down with logic. I finally capitulated entirely. That is how I came to be gratified by the Supreme Court’s decision that the Second Amendment protects an individual right to own a gun for personal use. The decision overturned the District of Columbia’s ban on handguns, but Justice Antonin Scalia’s majority opinion included some important qualifications.

The opposing forces remain the same. On the one side, there are elites who believe that those outside of the elite are mere cattle destined for exploitation. The concept that such peons possess rights simply by existing is heresy to the elites.

On the other side are individualists, who by definition have a hard time getting along with anyone - most of all each other.

But there are an awful lot of individualists who, as history students, have learned that the elites' tactics seemed to have trended over the past century towards mass extermination.

Ergo, if, by virtue of one's individualist status, one has already been likely marked by the elites for extermination, why would any rational opponent play the elites' game?

CT: Unique law lets police seize guns before a crime is committed

HARTFORD -- Using a unique state law, police in Connecticut have disarmed dozens of gun owners based on suspicions that they might harm themselves or others.

The state's gun seizure law is considered the first and only law in the country that allows the confiscation of a gun before the owner commits an act of violence. Police and state prosecutors can obtain seizure warrants based on concerns about someone's intentions.

Many gun owners don't get their seized firearms back. Courts ordered guns held in more than one-third of the documented seizures since 1999. Judges directed guns destroyed, turned over to someone else or sold in more than 40 other cases.

U.S. District Judge Robert L. Hinkle said early on that he thought Florida's new take-your-gun-to-work law was "stupid." So is his ruling partially upholding the law.

Not that it's Judge Hinkle's fault. Even the National Rifle Association admits that the law was sloppily written. But not every law that's stupid also is unconstitutional. Sometimes, stupidity stands.

Here's the upshot of his ruling: Some businesses in Florida have to let employees who have concealed-weapons permits bring their guns to work, if the weapon remains locked in the car. Every business in Florida can bar employees who don't have such a permit from bringing weapons to work.

Tavion Jolivet, 12, fired his first gun Saturday. In fact, he fired his first two guns, a .22-caliber bolt-action rifle and a 9 mm pistol. All the while, his pastor was standing right beside him.

Jolivet dreams of being a sniper in the U.S. Army after killing terrorists with a controller in the "SOCOM" and "Call of Duty" video game series. The Rev. Sean Mohair has been shooting guns for 30 years after his father taught him when he was 9. He wanted to give Jolivet the chance to experience firing a gun and to learn the respect that comes with it.

Culpeper town law prohibits the shooting of guns in town except for residents who have a special permit from the town manager to do so.

Police Chief Scott Barlow wants to close that loophole.

“We are so populated now it is not safe to allow folks to shoot in town when their neighbors are just a stones throw away,” he said in an e-mail Friday about occasional requests from town citizens for permission to shoot garden pests.

At its meeting last week, the Public Safety Committee passed through the chief’s recommendation to Town Council.

Today, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) spoke to the National Urban League, a group “devoted to empowering African Americans to enter the economic and social mainstream.” When an audience member asked him how he planned to reduce urban crime, McCain praised Mayor Rudy Giuliani’s efforts in New York Cirty before invoking the military’s tactics in Iraq as the model for crime-fighting...

Submitter's note: McCain believes in 'elitism' and is a strong believer in GOVERNMENTAL AUTHORITY.
So government creates the inner city problem, and then comes to the rescue. How nice.

What really does matter to these exceptional youngsters is the fun they had competing, the friends they made and the memories they will take home.

A man shot and killed one of three people who burst into a Woodland Hills home Friday afternoon in an apparent attempted home invasion robbery, police said.
The shootout between the resident and the intruders occurred in the 24000 block of Burbank Boulevard about 2:45 p.m., said Officer Jason Lee of the Los Angeles Police Department's Media Relations Section.
One of the suspected robbers died at the scene, but the two escaped, according to Lee, who said the homeowner was not injured. One person who was detained was later released by police after it was determined that the person was not involved in the incident.

One of several men who stormed a suburban home Friday was shot dead by one of the residents, who blasted the intruders as they entered, in an incident police were calling a home-invasion robbery attempt. Three or four men kicked in the door of the house in the 24300 block of Burbank Boulevard, setting off the gunfight, Los Angeles police said. Aside from the one intruder killed, no one was injured. "Obviously, these residents here do have a right to protect themselves," said Los Angeles police Lt. Steven Sambar. "Those people are extremely lucky."

After looking at Mr. Carpenter’s cell phone, and seeing that the last call was at least 20 minutes prior, the officer, disappointment written on his face, said, “I must have been mistaken. But you know that’s the new law, so be careful.”

Mr. Carpenter speculated that the traffic officer was looking to write his first cell phone ticket. Regardless, this exchange shows what can begin to happen as we cede more and more of our personal responsibility to the state. Law enforcement officers begin the long migration from people whose main job is to catch criminals to people who become our keepers - minding our safety, telling us what to do.

Pedestrians Could Be Fined $25 If Bill Becomes Law

White wants the state to pass a law prohibiting people from walking across the street while using a cell phone. A bill along those lines has already been introduced in the Illinois House.

White told WBBM he still wants the state to pass restrictions on drivers using cell phones, but he also wants a ban on texting or talking on the street in the state's larger cities.

State Rep. Ken Dunkin introduced House Bill 4520 on Jan. 17, which would make it a petty offense for a person crossing any street in the state to use a cell phone at the same time. If the bill is passed, a person caught could be fined up to $25. The bill is currently in committee. White said he wants a similar law to

Milio, who has dementia, was unable to get into a care facility while his case was pending.

The undercover Manatee County Sheriff's Office detective on the street corner that afternoon in November took 30 steps to go chat with Milio, who authorities say had honked his car horn at the woman to get her

Milio, who turned 94 this month, stopped his car in a parking lot about 60 feet away from the woman, who was standing in an area where authorities regularly set up stings to nab johns. Milio did not flash his lights or say anything to lure the woma

After the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the District of Columbia’s ban on firearms was unconstitutional, the City Council approved new firearms legislation that allows residents to apply for handgun permits. This is the normal course of business a governmental body takes when the Supreme Court determines whatever it was doing was unconstitutional. That is unless it’s the D.C. City Council that’s acting unconstitutional.

The Associated Press headline was “D.C. will accept gun-permit applications.” But the real headline should have been, “D.C. defies Supreme Court ruling on handguns.”

State legislators and students supporting legislation to allow concealed firearms on college campuses aimed to debunk the notion that “traditional” aged college students are too reckless to own and possess firearms during a recent public forum held in Washington, D.C.

During its first national meeting, “Supporting Self-Defense on Campus,” Students for Concealed Carry on Campus (SCCC) along with The Second Amendment Federation (SAF), hosted a six-part forum on Aug. 1 at the National Press Club in an attempt to gain support for legislation allowing concealed guns on college campuses nationwide.

Washington - Ever since the tragedy that took place on the campus of Virginia Tech, colleges and universities nationwide are trying to create 'gun free' zones on campus. But some gun-toting students say if they're disarmed, only the shooters will be.

Students for Concealed Carry on Campus (SCCC), which has grown to a 30,000-strong group of members made up largely of students and some faculty members, recently met in Washington for the non-partisan group's first-ever national Conference, though attendance was limited. But then, what college student ever had enough coin in their jeans to travel cross-country and attend a conference - especially on a topic as sensitive as 'gun control'.

That might change if Sen. Richard Burr has his way. The North Carolina lawmaker has attached an amendment to a popular veteran's health bill that would remove many veterans from the national database and prevent the Department of Veterans Affairs from unilaterally adding names to the list without having them go through the legal system.

As things stand now, the VA adds veterans to the NICS database if they've been assigned ffduciary [sic] guardians, Burr says. The VA apparently believes bouncing checks makes people mentally incompetent. "The (national database) is for criminals, not for folks who have troubles handling their own financial offairs," Burr said.

So now, the government of the District of Columbia is effectively requiring a literacy test to register a gun. A literacy test required in a city that is majority African-American. And the NAACP, ACLU and the civil rights establishment are completely silent. Do any of these groups care about the civil rights of the residents of the nation's capital? It appears not.

In broader terms, why does D.C. require a written exam at all? For what other enumerated Constitutional right does any American have to take an exam? I know of no examination requirement for an American to exercise freedom of speech.
