After deadly shootings over the weekend in Dayton, Ohio and El Paso, Texas, Rep. Robert Wittenberg, D-Huntington Woods, fielded another round of media calls about his legislation that would allow courts to temporarily take guns away from somebody posing an extreme risk in Michigan.

Earlier this year, he started his third term and introduced the legislation for the third time. It hasn’t budged.

His proposal would let immediate family members, current and former spouses or partners, roommates and law enforcement could ask a judge for an order to temporarily take possession of a person’s firearms and prevent them from buying new ones.

The demonstration was one of many springing up statewide in the wake of the mass shootings in Texas and Ohio that killed more than 30 people. The group gathers on this particular street corner, which borders both the state Capitol and US Senator Pat Toomey’s Harrisburg office, every week.

Democrat presidential hopeful Joe Biden responded to the weekend shootings by calling for gun controls that already failed to stop the Dayton, Ohio, attack. Biden tweeted that “[Sen. Few things are more frustrating than watching members of the media, politicians, and activists who often know very little about guns, have the resources to hire security when they face threats, and don’t understand the weapons criminals use telling me what I “need” to protect my family. And what they invariably tell me I “need” is a weapon less powerful than the foreseeable criminal threat.

A Republican congressman and survivor of the 2017 baseball practice shooting is standing by his opposition to a House background check bill in the wake of the two mass shootings in Texas and Ohio, saying the measure was a “partisan show bill.” The bill, which passed the House earlier this year by a vote of 240-190 but stalled in the Republican-controlled Senate, gained renewed attention this week following the shootings.

Dayton Shooter's Gun is the Reason He Killed 9 in 30 Seconds — and Gun-makers Know it

Once again, lone gunmen armed with (legally purchased) military-style assault weapons were able to quickly kill unarmed civilians in two mass shootings this past weekend. The fact that the Dayton shooter was killed within 30 seconds of firing his first shot — and yet was still able to kill nine people within that short period of time, injuring dozens more — makes plainly visible what military veterans like myself have long understood: Assault rifles are uniquely lethal because they’re designed to kill as many humans as possible, as quickly as possible.

There are times where slight cracks are seen in the Second Amendment movement. Red flag laws sound great. In principle, I support them, but Democrats will never agree to the strict due process mechanisms that ensure people’s rights aren’t trampled on and it would most certainly be abused and morphed into a confiscatory weapon. In short, this will be the first of many policy weapons the anti-gun Left wants to use in their safety over security (and due process) agenda when it comes to gun politics. We’re now at it again: two horrific mass shooting less than 24 hours apart in El Paso, Texas and Dayton, Ohio.

America is dangerous. The world is dangerous. Here, there, and everywhere, danger is lurking. When people act unpredictably and threateningly, the best thing to do is be prepared. Police and security are the ideal intermediaries, but personal safety cannot be entirely entrusted to others. It is time to responsibly conceal a firearm.

CNN is hosting another town hall on gun violence.
Pro-Second Amendment activists would be smart to avoid this thing like a bad disease. Do not accept an invitation to represent the gun rights side of the debate. Do not accept even an invitation to join as a member of the audience. Walk away. Nothing good can come from this.

The mass shootings in El Paso, Texas and Dayton, Ohio brought the discussion of gun laws back to the forefront. In his address to the nation, President Donald Trump voiced support for so-called red flag laws. "We must make sure that those judged to pose a grave risk to public safety do not have access to fire arms and that if they do, those firearms can be taken away through rapid due process," Trump said Monday morning from the White House. "That is why I have called for red flag laws, also known as extreme risk protection orders."

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
Are we at last brought to such humiliating and debasing degradation, that we cannot be trusted with arms for our defense? Where is the difference between having our arms in possession and under our direction, and having them under the management of Congress? If our defense be the real object of having those arms, in whose hands can they be trusted with more propriety, or equal safety to us, as in our own hands? — Patrick Henry, 3 J. Elliot, Debates in the Several State Conventions 45, 2d ed. Philadelphia, 1836
