Authorities in Johnston County say they caught a would-be burglar after his intended victim fired a pistol at a car speeding away from the victim's house early this morning. Randall Holmes, who lives on Buffalo Road north of Selma, was awakened about 2 a.m. by noises and looked out a window to see a man trying to break into his house through a door, according to the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office. Holmes grabbed his pistol, stepped outside and fired four shots at what he figured was the getaway car.

Two "comeback kids" who championed gun violence prevention upset both the conventional wisdom and established opponents in Maryland yesterday. Incumbent Maryland State Senator John Giannetti was unseated by his Democratic primary opponent, former ambassador Jim Rosapepe, who pounded Giannetti for killing the state's assault rifle ban in a prior session of the legislature. And in an open race for another State Senate seat in Maryland, newcomer candidate Mike Lenett won easily over established state legislators by stressing his support from Sarah Brady.

The slaying of Matthew Milam Jr. by his younger brother last month appears to have been an act of self-defense, an assistant district attorney said Tuesday.

“We are undecided at this time whether to pursue charges but feel there is a good possibility that we won't,” Susan Thompson said in a telephone interview.

“There's evidence, very strong evidence, of a clear case of self-defense on the part of James Milam.”

A 51-year-old ER nurse proved that the right to bear arms is indeed irrelevant...if you have a frickin' bear's arms. A lot of people have been trying to add amendments to the constitution lately. They want a ban on gay marriage, on flag burning and a few others I won't mention here because they're almost as ridiculous as a ban on flag burning. However, since we're talking so much about adding, I think we need to take one away. Here it is: "A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed."

And now you can't bring your cup of coffee on board the airplane. It's the latest new rule laid down by the nation's security wizards. Everyone knows it's ridiculous--the notion that you can toss together a few liquids and make an explosive is a fiction from late-night movies. You might as well prohibit bald men on the grounds that the evil Lex Luthor was bald and so was Blofeld, the head of S.P.E.C.T.R.E.

The alleged incident happened outside Applebee's on Aug. 26. Robert Wise, of Garner, said he, his wife and 11-year-old daughter were leaving the restaurant when a man came up to their car window, yelling at them about taking up two parking spaces.

Wise said the man didn't identify himself as a law enforcement officer and tried to pull him out of the car. He said he was beaten, sprayed with pepper spray and handcuffed and needed to be taken to WakeMed for treatment.

The TV and radio ads are true: Buy a truck. Get a free gun.

A creative marketing campaign conjured up by Prestige Nissan General Sales Manager Dan Crumpler offers buyers of used or new Nissan SUVs or trucks in August a choice of a Remington 1187 shotgun or a Remington 700 rifle.

"We've given away five or six guns already," Crumpler said Monday at the Thomasville-based dealership. "The guns retail for about $699 each, so it's a good deal, especially with dove season starting Labor Day weekend and with deer season starting in early October."
