The defense appealed, successfully arguing the slides and statements mischaracterized the law of self-defense and shifted the burden of proof to the defense, presuming Rossiter was guilty unless they agreed Stachelrodt "deserved what he got," the opinion says.

The court ruled that self-defense "does not hinge on whether the deceased 'deserved to die.'" But Scott repeated told the jury that Rossiter's claim of self-defense would only be valid if Stachelrodt deserved to die.

So here's a simple question for Florida lawmakers: Who is looking out for the victims? Because we know the state has bent over backward to make sure residents who claim self-defense are not hindered by costly and upsetting delays in the criminal justice system. But what about the families of those who are killed? Now that the "stand your ground' law has created a tricky new layer for prosecutors, who is looking out for the families left broken in the law's wake?

In an exclusive interview with the National Rifle Association (NRA), Yellowhammer has learned that the pro-gun group is going all in for Luther Strange in advance of the Sept 26th Republican runoff for the U.S. Senate.

The NRA—the country’s largest Second Amendment advocacy organization—told Yellowhammer today that it is launching a seven-figure ad campaign across Alabama starting tomorrow as a show of support for Strange in these last ten days of the election.

The first TV ads will begin airing tomorrow on statewide cable and broadcast channels. When asked why the NRA is making this move, Jennifer Baker, the organization’s director of public affairs said:

We often think of millennials as being more liberal than older generations, usually based on their voting patterns. But when it comes to individual issues, millennials can’t all be painted with a uniformly left-wing brush. One such issue is gun control. In October 2015, a Gallup poll found that, while 57 percent of 30-49 year olds and 56 percent of 50-64 year olds support stricter gun laws, gun control was only supported by 50 percent of people aged 18-29. (Millennials, in case you forgot, are technically people 35 and younger.) It’s a mistake to think that all pro-gun or anti-regulation millennials are men; millennial women are buying and using guns, too. Bustle talked to a few of them to figure out why.

From the early information available to police yesterday, it appears a burglar made a fatal mistake in the victim selection process as he was going about his work.

The King County Sheriff's office says an unidentified man was shot and killed by a homeowner as the man and another suspect attempted to break into a house where a man and his two children were inside.

The other suspect fled the scene before police arrived.

Just after 11:00 am SeaTac Police received a call of a burglary to a residence in the 17600 block of 38th Avenu South and shots being fired.

NJ: The Second Amendment has been taken out of context

I cannot understand how the Second Amendment has become far more important than any of the other original nine, and how the simple understanding of its words have been perverted to mean that anyone can and will bear arms, without exception and without regulation. The seeming magical power one possesses when purchasing and holding and shooting a gun denies the horrific result of a projectile passing through flesh and bone and organs. The National Rifle Association has taken the obsession to absurd lengths in suggesting that more guns will make us safer. In light of staggering statistics and events such as the Sandy Hook and Charleston massacres, how can anyone of right mind believe the lies?

This week, twice-failed presidential candidate Hillary Clinton released her new book, “What Happened,” which chiefly serves to assign blame to the myriad politicians, journalists, organizations, countries, prejudices, and technologies she claims caused her defeat. Gun rights supporters will be happy to know that NRA is featured prominently.

In addition to apportioning NRA its well-deserved share of the blame, Clinton seeks to rewrite her own history on the gun issue and urges her fellow Democrats to ignore political reality and continue to champion gun control.

On Tuesday, the House Natural Resources Subcommittee on Federal Lands held a hearing on the Sportsmen's Heritage and Recreational Enhancement (SHARE) Act, which had been introduced on Sept. 1 by Congressman Jeff Duncan (R-SC). Following the subcommittee hearing, the full Committee on Natural Resources marked up and passed the SHARE Act by a vote of 22-13. All amendments offered in an attempt to weaken the bill were soundly defeated. The bill now awaits floor action in the U.S. House.

To help prevent suicides in Wisconsin, residents would be able to prohibit themselves from buying a handgun in the state, under a proposal at the state Legislature circulated last week.

The proposal, authored by Rep. Melissa Sargent, D-Madison, would allow individuals who might be at risk of suicide to sign away their handgun-buying privileges for one, five or 20 years to try and reduce the number of suicides committed with handguns.

"I feel very strongly that we will be saving lives in the state of Wisconsin," Sargent said. "If one life is saved because of this legislation, it would be a win."

Gang members profit through criminal enterprises in a variety of ways: drug, weapon and human trafficking; theft, robbery, intimidation and extortion, and various kinds of fraud. In a win-win for gangbangers, material gains from criminality in one California municipality will soon include government-sanctioned payola.

In a special meeting on August 29, the nine-member City Council of Sacramento unanimously agreed to allocate $1.5 million in funding and to move forward with a “gun-violence reduction strategy” that will include cash payments (“LifeMAP milestone allowances”) and paid vacations for the handful of gang members suspected of committing the majority of gang-related gun crimes in the city.

Herring has voted for greater gun control in the past and advocated more of the same as Virginia attorney general. The NRA endorses Adams while labeling Herring as "one of the most anti-gun lawmakers In Virginia history.”

In a militarized, highly policed society awash in weaponry, where the right to bear arms is enshrined as a near-sacred constitutional right, writer and director Jeremy Kagan offers an important new movie about gun violence.

In Shot, Kagan shows us how a random shooting in Los Angeles affects the victim, and the shooter, too. The film features Noah Wyle, co-star on the TV medical drama ER, as Mark Newman, who is accidentally shot by Miguel (Jorge Lendeborg Jr. of Spiderman).

There are three topics that the press mangles with a regularity that borders on the pathological: Abortion, faith, and firearms. This is a story about the third.

A few newsrooms mistook toy guns for the real thing following a deadly shooting this week at a high school near Spokane, Wash. Three students were injured in the shooting, and one was killed.

The alleged gunman, Caleb Sharpe, 15, was known to his peers as "quiet and sometimes quirky," according to the Spokesman Review. He was also reportedly known for filming videos of himself and his friends playing with toy guns and then uploading them to YouTube.

Several gun bills are being considered in the Ohio Legislature, including one that would permit trained paramedics to carry firearms while on duty.

Lawmakers gave initial approval Thursday to House Bill 79, a measure that would allow medical professionals who have received tactical firearms training to carry guns while on duty. The proposal passed out of committee and now heads for a full vote in the House.

Rep. Wes Retherford, R-Hamilton, one of the bill’s sponsors, said that arming medics will allow them to defend themselves and will free up officers to deal with dangerous suspects.

There were few things more satisfying to your childhood self than hearing that sharp thwack as a flung rubber band hit its target, the latest victory in your rubber band battle against an older sibling.

You might be too old for that sort of horseplay now — or hey, maybe you're not (no judgment here) — but you won't be able to resist the old-school style of the Model PPK and Model 1911 Rubber Band Guns.

Dana Milbank is not a serious journalist. A former White House correspondent for the Washington Post, Milbank now writes what can be characterized as a humor column for the paper. Within these confines, one might expect a relaxed journalistic standard. However, a recent Milbank column concerning the Sportsmen's Heritage and Recreational Enhancement (SHARE) Act reveals the troubling amount of error and laziness the Post is willing to tolerate from their writers.

The episode has several storylines that follow a rash of fictional mass shootings (committed by men) occurring in the United States. The show isn’t necessarily taking a position on gun control, but is instead using the controversial topic to prove a point about women’s rights in the United States. “It was less about the mass shootings per se and more about what it says about the stories that we tell and how we tell them,” BoJack Horseman showrunner Raphael Bob-Waksberg told Slashfilm regarding the episode. “Should we take any responsibility for ourselves or are people adults who can make their own decisions? In what ways are we forwarding certain narratives that are not helpful?”

The National Rifle Association Institute for Legislative Action (NRA-ILA) today announced its strong support for Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke’s public lands access initiative. In the spirit of Teddy Roosevelt, Secretary Zinke's land management plans demonstrate his steadfast commitment to conservation and America’s hunting heritage.

“For too long, access to public lands for hunters and recreational shooters has been restricted by a bureaucracy that opposes hunting and shooting,” said Chris W. Cox, executive director, NRA-ILA. “Secretary Zinke has made clear that he respects the rights of America’s sportsmen and his pro-hunting, pro-conservation proposals have the full support of the NRA.”

Last week, acting on a tip, we logged into Facebook’s automated ad system to see if “Jew hater” was really an ad category. We found it, but discovered that the category — with only 2,274 people in it — was too small for Facebook to allow us to buy an ad pegged only to Jew haters.

Facebook’s automated system suggested “Second Amendment” as an additional category that would boost our audience size to 119,000 people, presumably because its system had correlated gun enthusiasts with anti-Semites.
