"Citing his brother Tony's work as a Houston SWAT officer, attorney general nominee Alberto Gonzales told the Senate in writing Tuesday that he supports extending the expired federal assault weapons ban."
"'I worry about his safety and the types of weapons he (Tony) will confront on the street,' Gonzales said. 'The president has made it clear that he stands ready to sign a reauthorization of the federal assault weapons ban if it is sent to him by Congress. I, of course, support the president on this issue.'"
"Anti-gun groups criticized President Bush during the campaign last year for failing to press for an extension of the ban."
"Gonzales also said he wants Congress to reauthorize the Patriot Act this year, despite complaints that it is too intrusive." ... |

| Irregardless of his statement denying torture as a policy, it seems the Spanish Inquisition is once again alive, and well, and living in Washington. |

"If John Kerry wins the White House in November, the mask will come off his radical anti-gun agenda."—Chris Cox, Executive Director, NRA-ILA
What about Pres. Bush's mask, Mr. Cox? You and Wayne and Kayne all told us to "cast a vote for freedom." Is this what you meant?
I guess $20 million doesn't buy politicians like it used to.
I'm waiting for NRA management apologists to plant the seed that this is all a ploy--that Gonzales HAS to say he supports the ban in order to get confirmed but doesn’t really MEAN it--just like Bush wasn't REALLY for it either, it was all part of a "strategery" to take an argument away from the Dems.
Trust us. And pay no attention to the man behind the curtain.

I'm sorry if I sound cold-hearted but I really don't care what Gonzales' brother Tony has to "face" on the street. The SKS rifle seems to have become the devilgun of the antis recently, but it's no more powerful than the 110 year old .30-30 round. It function is the same as any semiauto rifle. I respect the job police do (when they do it right) and awknowledge it's a tough job. But there is no excuse for using this to destroy our 2nd amend. rights. If they can go after SKSs, AR-15s, and similar guns, what's to stop them from coming after every rifle under the same phony rubrick? Nothing, that's what. W is a HUGE dissapointment here!!!!! |

| markht, not only is the 7.62x39 not as powerful as the .30-30, but it is roughly 500 ft-lbs weaker! (standard mil type ammo) That's a difference of close to a .357 magnum! |

Anyone still think King George will appoint pro-gun, pro-freedom people to the Supreme Court?
Markht, you are not cold-hearted at all. The job of the police and indeed of government itself is to protect the unalienable rights of the people, not the other way around. The idea that we are here to serve our masters and that THEIR "safety" trumps all else, is obscene. We rejected that kind of thinking two centuries ago.
While I respect what people like Tony Gonzales do, no one forced him to take the job and he presumably went into it with his eyes open. If free people scare him, he can always resign. |

| Tony is afraid his brother in Houston, TX would get shot by an "assault weapon" owned by good law abiding citizens, as if though we good folks do drive-bys on police. Even if there was a ban in effect, that wouldn't stop criminals or terrorist from blasting his SWAT brother. Now what if you or I needed one of these rifles to protect our brothers and sisters, mothers and fathers? He says we don't matter, his brother is more important than your freedom. We are not in Mexico, where crime with firearms has run amok, and they're banned there. Tony boy, you da man, the clueless man that is. |

| Gonzales is another typical far-left, statist loving, liberal. Anyone who expects anything more or less of this man is fooling himself. What does one expect from a man with no character or principle? A devout patriot with the nation's Bill of Rights at heart? Unfortunately, we are not this man's master, as his devotion to another authority is not of our own. Therefore, he is dangerous. This is what singularly occurs when a RINO is elected to the Oval Office. |

So we have an administration that thinks that your right to keep semiauto rifles is dispensible.
That thinks it is acceptable to lock American citizens up in indefinite detention without Habeas corpus, due process, trial by jury, or assistance of counsel.
That thinks torture is an acceptable State policy.
That under the Patriot Act has the power to declare any "criminal" activity to be subject to the anti-terrorist provisions of the Act.
What do they think is going to happen when they start rounding up dissidents if their targets know this treatment awaits them in concentration camps? |

I am a law enforcement officer, and worry about WHO I face, not which type of weapon. They are all dangerous. The prosecutors need to get tough on bad guys, not folks who do the right thing everyday. Please don't assume all law enforcement officers feels the way this dingbat nominee does. W is letting us down.
Most street cops either like guns or at least have no agenda on lawful gun ownership. When you see a bunch of guys in uniform standing behind a politician who is banning or wanting to ban guns, it is either a chief or those ordered to appear in uniform by the chief/ sheriff. And it is usually from the larger cities. |

| The right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.' The right of the whole people, old and young, men, women and boys, and not militia only, to keep and bear arms of every description, and not such merely as are used by the militia, shall not be infringed, curtailed, or broken in upon, in the smallest degree; and all this for the important end to be attained: the rearing up and qualifying a well-regulated militia, so vitally necessary to the security of a free State. Our opinion is that any law, State or Federal, is repugnant to the Constitution, and void, which contravenes this right. [Nunn vs. State, 1 Ga. (1 Kel.) 243, at 251 (1846)] |
